Here Comes Winter !

And we are gearing up for a new measure of Reading Growth with our Mid-Year Winter Screening Assessments. Please help your students come prepared the week of Dec 9th-Dec 13th by ensuring they are rested and encouraged to do their best. Having breakfast and lunch (from home or school) and staying hydrated is always helpful and keeps young minds stay alert and ready to learn.

Free swimming lessons are being offered by the Rec Center to 2nd graders, the last session is December 2 through December 12; Mondays through Thursdays, unless otherwise noted. Class sizes are limited to 8 students per class. Due to class sizes and to maximize the time allowed for teaching swim classes, there are two different time slots; 3:45 to 4:15 p.m. and 4:15-4:45 p.m. Once all lessons are complete all children still in the pool will be directed to the locker rooms to change.

Rec Center registration forms and information about the swimming lessons were sent home in September. Completed registration forms need to be returned to the Rec Center. A bus will transport students from Sunset School to the Rec Center, parents will pick up their student after the lesson. Parents must pick their student up at the Rec Center NO LATER than 5:00 p.m.

Make sure your student leaves home with their swimming clothes and a towel!

Happy Holidays!

December is always a fun and busy month at Sunset School. Many classrooms will have holiday celebrations for the students to enjoy. I am asking you to keep food allergies in mind as the holidays approach. We have many students with food allergies, some causing skin or stomach issues while others are life-threatening. Please contact your child’s teacher or myself for any questions regarding food allergies in your student’s classroom. If your student has food allergies, consider offering alternative snacks for them to enjoy if there are snacks in the classroom that they can not eat. Thank you for working with me to keep all of our students safe. I wish you all the best!

School Counselor School Counselor

During our Second Step class we are learning what emotion regulation means. It is when we can control our emotions no matter how big or small they are, even when we are mad. This way we are able to keep friends and make more friends as opposed to physically or emotionally hurting them and then our friends won't want to be friends with us anymore. We know that when our relationships are strong we learn better so this is critical to learn and practice these skills.

Also, a book vending machine just arrived at our school and students may earn a book if they go above and beyond showing that they are a responsible person. In other words, you can’t earn a book by just doing what is expected of you but you need to show that you are really responsible. So in light of our new book machine I am revisiting what it means to be a responsible person. Students may also complete a snowflake to share what they believe being responsible means.

I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving and please stop by, call or email with any questions or concerns that you may have. I am always glad to help our students in any way that I can!

Doctor's notes for absences

Parents, just a reminder about absences due to illness or doctor/dentist visits. If your student is sick and they see a doctor, please get a note from their doctor regarding their illness. This will excuse their absence from school. The same is true for a doctor or dentist appointment, a note from the doctor/dentist will excuse their absence.

Celebrating Kids of Character! Celebrating Kids of Character!

zoom_out_map

A big thank you to Park 6 Administration and Board of Trustees for purchasing book vending machines for our schools, including Sunset School! Our book vending machine will be used to celebrate Kids of Character.

We are focusing on raising awareness of our Sunset School Creed "I will be a kid of character, worthy of trust. I will be respectful and responsible, doing what I must. I will always act with fairness, I will show that I care, I will be a good citizen, and always do my share." Each month will focus on one of the pillars of character, responsibility, caring, respect, fairness, trustworthiness, and citizenship. November and December’s focus is responsibility. When a teacher or staff member sees a student exhibiting behaviors that epitomize responsibility the student will be awarded a token and explain why they earned it. During a break in their day, the student will accompany the staff person to use the book vending machine to get a book. Parents will receive a phone call about their kid of character, why they earned the token and the book they chose. If parents prefer a different book, the student will choose a different one.

The machine is filled with books that engage and inspire kids, and that parents in our community will appreciate. Any books placed in the machine are first recommended, vetted, and approved by our Library Committee which consists of parents, teachers from every grade level, our District Librarian, and the principal.

Please label your student's coat, hat, mittens, lunch box etc. with their name. This makes it easier to return misplaced items to the proper owner! Thank you.
