Superintendent's Message

Dear JUHSD Community,

As we head into the Presidents' Day holiday and February Recess, I encourage you to take time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate, along with enjoying the sun as it begins to usher in Spring.

At a press conference yesterday, Governor Newsom shared the release of the California SMARTER Plan: The Next Phase of California’s COVID-19 Response. The SMARTER Plan addresses:

Shots – Vaccines are the most powerful weapon against hospitalization and serious illness

Masks – Properly worn masks with good filtration help slow the spread of COVID-19

Awareness – Continuing to stay aware of how COVID is spreading, evolving variants, clear communication, and coordination of state and local government response

Readiness – Being prepared with the tools, resources and supplies needed to quickly respond and keep public health and the health care system well prepared

Testing – Getting the right type of tests, PCR or antigen, where they are needed most

Education – California will continue to work to keep schools open and children safely in classrooms

Rx – Evolving and improving treatments will become increasingly available and critical

Remember that the mask mandate is still in effect in schools. Governor Newsom shared that on February 28, the state will inform us of the date when the masking mandate will eventually be lifted in schools will be announced. He clarified that the mandate itself will not be lifted on that date.

Please enjoy the week off and we look forward to seeing you back at school on February 28!

Warmly,

Toni Presta

Superintendent

THS Makes Paper With ATP

Thornton High School students and Paraprofessional Sandy McGurty made a special visit to Serramonte del Rey this past Wednesday and taught our Adult Transition Program (ATP) students how to make paper!

Through this course offered at THS, students learn about the conservation of resources, along with fostering ways to be more innovative in helping save the environment. As the class fine-tunes the process of paper consistency, they recycle Thornton's paper waste into new sheets of paper that will be used campus-wide, including the creating of special stationary! Swing by the DO or THS to purchase these one-of-a-kind cards, envelopes, and more!
