Volume 2, Issue 3

With the first day of school and Issue 3, we are happy as can be! This Thursday marked the first day of classes and despite some technology hiccups, it was a tremendous success. Students got to meet their teachers and teachers their students. So fun!!! This week's background comes from our first day of classes. We had our high school kickoff with Mr. David hosting storytime, Mrs. Maeda's classes exchanging smiles, Mrs. Dove's sharing summer stories, and Mrs. McCourtney's 5th graders discovering what it looks like to be Ready to Learn. Please check out all of the latest below. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mr. Fineberg, our principal, at efineberg@tustin.k12.ca.us.

Principal's Message...

Wow!!! The first day of school. This year like all of 2020 it seems like provided a unique opening to the school year as we met each other virtually to start the year. A few technology hiccups couldn't stop our students and teachers from connecting and celebrating the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. It was so great to see so many smiling faces. It's going to be a great year! Challenges will certainly present, but together we will overcome and thrive. As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. K-12 Device Distribution

If your student did not get a device, please contact the office to schedule a time to pick one up. We have a limited number on hand, so please call ahead and schedule a time so that we can confirm we have one and that it is ready for pickup. Please remember, that in order to check out a device, your DATA CONFIRMATION OUTLINED BELOW must be completed.

ACTION ITEM: Online Data Confirmation

If you have not done so already, it's critical that you complete your Data Confirmation. It's quick and easy and way better than the first day packets that resulted in hours of writing your name, address, and signature on multiple documents. The process is done through your TUSD Parent Portal account and requires your parent login. The process will include the opportunity to review/change contact information, select appropriate student authorizations, and review updated district materials. You also need the confirmation page completed at the end of the process to pick up your device.

For speedy service, please post the grade level of your child(ren) on an 8.5x11 piece of paper on the dashboard. Additionally, we have set up some windows for pick up. Data Impressions/Microsoft: Go for Daily Engagement Incentive Program

The Tustin Unified School District (TUSD) is partnering with Data Impressions & Microsoft to highlight students who model outstanding daily engagement. Data Impressions and Microsoft have generously donated Microsoft Surface Go (or similar) devices to continue the TUSD engagement incentive program into the sixth year! One computer will be given away at the end of the school year at every school site in TUSD. All students who maintain daily engagement at TUSD’s schools will have a chance to win!

Program Details/Rules/Eligibility:

  • All participants in the program must be students who attend one of TUSD’s schools in the 2020-21 school year.
  • To be eligible for an entry in the lottery, a student must engage in instruction with their teachers and/or log into the necessary learning management system (ie. Schoology) on each school day throughout the year: August 13, 2020, through April 16, 2021.
  • The only excused absences that will keep a student eligible for the drawing will be illness or religious-affiliated. Discipline related absences including excessive tardiness to class a suspension of any kind would disqualify a student from the drawing.
  • A list of students who remain eligible for the drawing will be available at each school at the end of each quarter. A final list of eligible students will be one week prior to the drawing. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor their own eligibility and to resolve any discrepancies with the school attendance office/main office at least three days prior to the drawing.
  • Drawings for the donated devices will take place at each school site beginning May 10, 2021. Each winning student will receive their device from their principal following the drawing at their school.

TUSD's School Opening & Safety Plan

The health, safety, and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority as they return to school. When the new school year begins, the on-campus school will look much different than previous years due to new health and safety measures.

Tustin Unified has created a School Opening and Safety Plan that addresses how schools will meet the needs of students in the coming school year. The plan to reopen schools is based on current guidance from public health officials, state agencies, as well as your valuable input from the recent parent survey, and will be updated as the situation evolves. As a result, TUSD has put together two options that will address social-distancing requirements to keep TUSD students and staff safe while also supporting student learning.

For the 2020-21 academic year, Tustin Unified will provide families a choice of two instructional options, including the hybrid model – a blend of in-person and remote learning, and Tustin Connect (K-12) – 100% online virtual school with optional in-person instruction.

The TUSD School Opening and Safety Plan (English linked, Spanish below) covers the many procedures and protocols that are being put in place for a successful and safe reopening. The plan can also be found on the TUSD website at https://www.tustin.k12.ca.us.
