Hello Knights Nation!

Good afternoon Knights Nation!

We have quite a bit to let you know about leading up to Fall break. Thank you for taking the time to look at and read our Knightly News!

We were notified of a bike accident this week where one of our students ran into and knocked over a little Kindergarten girl. Our student was fine but the little girl was not. We get reports of these types of close calls often and would ask that if you have a few minutes, please chat with your kiddos about bike safety and how to be a kind citizen in our neighborhood. Main Boulevard is extremely busy before and after school and we need our students to be cautious and careful, especially when traveling at high speeds. Thank you for your help with this!

Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences begin this week on Oct 29 and then finish next week on Nov 3! We highly encourage you to bring your student to the conferences so that they can be part of the discussion and plan on how to best support their learning. Please sign up here to chat with your student and their teacher: https://mybookit.app/book/7any6dw. Sign up will close on Oct 29 @ 9am. If you need any assistance, please reach out to the main office or email tara.yeo@eips.ca for support!

Take Your Kid to Work Day is coming soon for Grade 9's! An email was sent home last week as well as a permission click for parents/guardians to complete for Grade 9 students. Please make sure you complete that as soon as possible.

As mentioned previous, our Academic Awards celebration is undergoing some changes. We are going to be hosting the 2025-26 Academic Awards on Friday November 27th at 2pm so that all of our student body can attend and celebrate the achievements of their peers. We will be livestreaming the event for families and will be inviting in parents/guardians of major award winners. We will be celebrating our last year Gr 9 award recipients separately. The 2026-27 Academic Awards will follow a similar celebration process and will be held on an afternoon in late June 2027. Stay tuned for more details in the next Knightly News!

Have a great couple of weeks leading up to our Fall Break, Knights families!

Sincerely,

Cherum Orr, Principal, cherum.orr@eips.ca

Tara Yeo, Assistant Principal, tara.yeo@eips.ca

Take Our Kids to Work Day – An Exciting Learning Opportunity for Grade 9 Students!

Elk Island Public Schools is pleased to inform you that Take Our Kids to Work Day is fast approaching! This national event, happening on November 4, 2026, provides Grade 9 students with the unique opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the workplace for a day of career exploration. This year’s theme is: Different Perspectives, Shared Direction!

The goal of Take Our Kids to Work Day is to introduce students to the world of work and help them begin thinking about their future careers. Whether they shadow you, a family member, or a trusted mentor, this experience will offer them valuable insights into daily work environments, professional responsibilities, and the wide variety of careers available to them. By engaging in this hands-on experience, students can connect what they learn in school with the real-world skills and competencies required in various jobs.

Why Participate? Take Our Kids to Work Day has many benefits:

  • Career Exploration: Students get a first-hand look at different career paths, helping them make informed choices about high school courses and post-secondary plans.

  • Workplace Experience: The day provides an introduction to the workplace, building early work-readiness skills, such as professionalism, communication, and teamwork.

  • Mentorship: Interacting with professionals offers students guidance and advice on how to pursue their future career goals.

How to Participate: We encourage parents and caregivers to arrange for their student to join them at their workplace, or connect them with a relative, neighbor, or friend who can provide a safe and educational experience. If your student is unable to participate through family connections, students should attend their regularly scheduled school day to participate in one of the many career exploration activities that their school will have prepared.

ISP's

Those students with ISP's have had those documents completed and sent home. SPT Conferences is a good time to discuss your student's learning needs with their teachers. It's a great opportunity to ensure everyone has the same plan for accommodations and supporting success in learning for your student.

Students without ISP's are still welcome to utilize universal learning accommodations such as extra time, speech to text, or text to speech to help facilitate their understanding. Please don't hesitate to chat with your students' teachers about this if you are curious about these supports.

Parents/guardians can also email me directly if you feel your child might benefit from meeting with me. My email is maddy.kozitzky@eips.ca

Inclement Weather

With the winter season almost here, the school has a few reminders for families:

· Ensure students have clothing appropriate for expected weather conditions.

· If weather conditions are bad enough to impact student transportation, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) advises families directly, and posts updates on social media and eips.ca.

· Decisions regarding bus cancellations are guided by an EIPS administrative procedure that states, “school bus service may be suspended…when there is a forecast or current temperature of -40 C, including wind chill factor, in one or more regions.” Other reasons for suspending or delaying school bus services include adverse weather and poor road conditions.

· When school bus services are suspended, schools remain open to students.

For more information, contact EIPS Student Transportation at 780-417-8151.

EIPS Communication Guidelines - Letter from EIPS to Families

Good morning, Elk Island Public Schools families,

At EIPS, we value strong communication between families and schools. We are also committed to supporting the well-being of the dedicated employees who serve students across the Division.

In a world where email and phone communication can happen at any hour, it is important that we respect and foster employee well-being while remaining responsive to students and families. Clear expectations help support this balance. The following guidelines were established and shared last year, and outline when families can expect a response:

  • Email: EIPS employees will respond to emails within two business days, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on regular working days.

  • Phone: EIPS employees will return calls within two business days, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on regular working days.

Urgent matters involving immediate student safety should be directed to the school principal or Director of the department and will, of course, be dealt with in a timely manner.

When concerns arise, please contact the school as soon as possible so staff have an opportunity to gather information, speak with those involved and determine appropriate next steps. Because tone can sometimes be misinterpreted in an email, we find a phone conversation is often the best approach when discussing difficult or sensitive issues. Difficult matters are best resolved when everyone discusses the issue respectfully, allows reasonable time for the situation to be reviewed and works collaboratively toward positive outcomes for students.

Similar communication has also been sent to staff so that expectations are clear and we can work together to strengthen a culture of respect, understanding and effective communication across EIPS.

Our hope is that these guidelines help us build a culture in which responsive service, respectful two-way communication and employee well-being are all valued and supported.
