Officer Johnson Brings the Bill of Rights to Life Officer Johnson Brings the Bill of Rights to Life

Last week, students in Mr. James Snelbaker and Mr. Wayne Dull’s American Cultures classes at the Middle School had a unique opportunity to connect their classroom lessons to real-world situations. As part of their Bill of Rights unit, the classes welcomed West York’s SRO, Officer Jordan Johnson, to discuss students’ constitutional rights and how they apply in a school setting.

Officer Johnson spoke with students about their rights to free speech, freedom of the press, and the right to assemble, as well as the laws surrounding search warrants and school safety. The discussion allowed students to ask questions and better understand how the Bill of Rights impacts their daily lives.

After the presentations, students wrote thank-you letters to Officer Johnson, expressing their appreciation for his time and insight. In response, Officer Johnson shared a heartfelt message with the teachers and students:

“I just wanted to reach out and give a huge thanks and appreciation for the thank-you letters from your classes. Please let each class know that I read each and every one of them and they are on display on my desk. They were a huge pick-me-up on a somber day following a tragedy that is far too close to home. The opportunity to further bond with the kids and share a bit of myself was amazing.”

Moments like these highlight the strong connection between students, staff, and our SROs at West York, as well as the importance of open dialogue about rights and responsibilities.

First Graders Build Math Skills Through Hands-On Learning First Graders Build Math Skills Through Hands-On Learning

In Ms. Tracy Overlander’s first grade classroom at Wallace Elementary, math is more than just numbers on a page — it’s hands-on, interactive, and fun! Students have been busy exploring several different math manipulatives, including base-10 blocks to build and break apart numbers, pattern blocks to explore shapes and symmetry, playing bunny hop to practice counting on a number line, and tally marks to practice counting and grouping numbers efficiently.

Students in Ms. Kelly Murphy's first grade class have been busy practicing decomposing numbers to 10 using a Jumbo 10-frame. This hands-on activity helps students see how numbers can be broken apart and put back together in different ways, building a strong foundation for addition and subtraction.

Hands-on math activities like these help students develop a deeper understanding of key concepts, build problem-solving skills, and make learning fun.

From Text to Garden: Students Explore Sequential Order From Text to Garden: Students Explore Sequential Order

Students in Ms. Megan Eckbold’s fourth-grade class at Trimmer Elementary recently explored the concept of text structures through a hands-on learning experience. After reading an article about tiger lilies, the class identified that the piece was written in sequential order and took notes on the steps for planting the flowers.

To bring their learning to life, the students headed outside and followed the directions to plant tiger lilies in front of the school. Each year, as the flowers bloom, they will serve as a lasting reminder of the lesson—and a concrete example of how sequential order is used in writing.

Yearbook Staff Sharpen Their Skills at Workshop Yearbook Staff Sharpen Their Skills at Workshop

Last week, several members of the West York Area High School yearbook staff had the opportunity to attend a specialized workshop designed to help student journalists strengthen their craft. Throughout the day, students participated in sessions that focused on three key areas: photography, design, and writing.

In the photography sessions, students practiced techniques to capture compelling images that tell a story, while also learning about lighting, composition, and candid photography. Design workshops challenged students to think creatively about layouts, color schemes, and typography to make each page both visually appealing and easy to navigate. Writing sessions emphasized strong storytelling, attention to detail, and crafting engaging captions and articles that bring the yearbook to life.

The workshop not only gave students a chance to learn new skills but also inspired them with fresh ideas they can bring back to this year’s publication. The staff left energized and ready to create a yearbook that reflects the vibrant spirit and achievements of the West York community.

11th Grade Students Participate in JA REAL Life Day 11th Grade Students Participate in JA REAL Life Day

On Wednesday, our 11th grade students at the High School took part in the Junior Achievement REAL Life Day, an interactive program designed to help teens prepare for the real-world responsibilities of adulthood, organized by the Business Education teachers.

During the event, students were guided through hands-on activities that focused on financial literacy, career readiness, and decision-making skills. They had the opportunity to explore topics such as budgeting, credit, saving, and balancing the costs of everyday life with future goals.

REAL Life Day encourages students to think about how their choices today can impact their futures, empowering them to build confidence and gain practical knowledge they can carry beyond the classroom.

A hugeThank You! to all of the community volunteers, many of whom are WY alumni and even some of our high school seniors! This program would not be possible without the amazing support of our community volunteers!

Here are some of the student comments following the event:

What was the most meaningful part of your REAL Life experience? Why?

  • I liked working with other people to solve problems. I feel like this is a big part of the real world.
  • The ability to work with my peers that I don't see on a daily basis while learning about preparing myself for the future.
  • I got to understand the idea of budgeting and how to create a successful budget.
  • The most meaningful part was the people who helped us because they were really nice and helped me look at things from a different perspective.
  • Being able to talk to adults who were once in my shoes and have a life of their own now. I think it's pretty crazy to think that I could be one of the volunteer adults one day, with a life of my own too.

If you had the chance to personally thank the volunteers, what would you say?

  • Thank you so very much for taking time out of your day to help and teach the younger generation about some challenges ahead of us.
  • I would like to thank them for putting their dedication and time into making our day a good learning experience.
  • I would say thank you so so much for taking the time to help us understand financial stuff better, I really appreciate it and it truly means the world to me.
  • I would say thank you for taking the time out of their days to help us learn more about our future.
  • I would like to thank them for their time, guidance, and kindness. Also the fact they made the REAL Life experience enjoyable and memorable.

On November 11, we will take time to recognize and honor the veterans in our local community. To mark this important day, the High School Social Studies Department is launching a Flag Campaign to raise funds for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Organization.

If you were with us last year, you may remember the beautiful display of flags along Bannister Street (pictured to the left). You can check out the ABC27 News video clip from last year as well!

This year, we hope to make an even bigger impact by displaying more flags than ever before! Did you know that West York is home to over 1,200 veterans? We invite you to honor the veterans in your life by supporting this fundraiser.

As contributions accumulate, DAV will send flags to be proudly displayed outside the High School. Our fundraising campaign runs through October 29, so don’t wait — help us fill the lawn with flags! You can look for the display beginning November 7 in front of the High School.

To donate, please use our school’s designated link below. Together, we can honor those who have served and continue to serve our nation.

  • Instant Admissions Decision Events: A "College Instant Admissions event" is a recruitment event where students can receive an on-the-spot admission decision from a college or university after meeting with an admissions counselor and reviewing their application materials. Students should bring their transcripts, test scores, and other required documents (Counselors will assist with access to these documents) to the event to facilitate the on-site review process. While these decisions are not binding and students can still apply to other schools, the events offer a quick way to get an admission offer and can serve as a "safety" admission, especially for students applying to less competitive institutions.

Wellspan Crisis Intervention Mobile Services Wellspan Crisis Intervention Mobile Services

Wellspan Philhaven Crisis Intervention provides urgent mental and behavioral health support, acting as a specialized response to individuals in crisis or experiencing severe emotional distress. These services include rapid assessments, stabilization, and connections to longer-term care through programs like their START program, which offers same-day access to therapy, psychiatric care, and other vital resources to prevent escalation and support recovery.

We are able to support the community through mobile crisis support 24/7, anytime/anywhere. If a student should need to be assessed either at the school or at home, you can alert the crisis team at 717-851-5320 for a counselor to come directly to them.

We are able to offer support for not only immediate needs for concerns of suicidal ideations, self-injurious behaviors, homicidal ideations, etc. but also, for any other concerns with accessing mental health care. We can assist with connecting individuals to services and place referrals to assist them.

If a student/family prefers a doctor's office setting, our walk-in center has relocated to the WellSpan START building in the Loretta Claiborne Building at 605 S George St, York, PA. We are able to see patients Mon-Fri 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM.
