A Message from the Principal

To KWHS families,

The last week is here. Your students have worked extremely hard this year and we are down to the final days. We want to ensure students finish off the year as they started so a couple of quick reminders.

- All underclassmen (9th-11th grade) are expected to be present next week. Just because they don't have an exam does not mean they are exempt from school. If a student is absent they will be marked absent. In addition to exams the last day of school will be CAV Fest as well as a half day. This is a school wide field day which we are looking forward to.

- If your student missed more than 18 days of a class period next week is the last week to make up seat time. Mrs. Hirsch will also be at KWHS on Saturday 5/17 from 9am-12pm for seat time.

- Report cards will be shared electronically on May 28th. Students must get all work in prior to the last day of school. If they miss an exam a 0 will be entered in the gradebook for E1.

- All school rules apply from the first day of school to the last day of school. This includes dress code and cell phone rules. Students have been doing really great with this so please encourage them to keep it up!

As a team we will strive for all Cavaliers to be prepared to Enroll in a college or university, Enlist in the military, or become Employed after graduation. I expect all Cavaliers to respectful in their daily interactions, be responsible for following all policies and procedures set by KWHS and KWCPS, and maintain a safe environment. We will work together to focus on success for EVERY CAV EVERYDAY. I appreciate your time and do not hesitate to email me at award@kwcps.k12.va.us or call me at (804) 769-3434 ext 641 if you have questions or concerns.

King William High School Cavaliers are Confident, Achievement-driven, Vision -focused, and Successful everyday.

Environmental Science creates solar powered boats Environmental Science creates solar powered boats

Students in Mrs. Slack's 1B environmental science class learned about plastic pollution in our oceans. With a grant from the Three Rivers Soil and Water Conservation District the students were challenged to design and build a solar powered boat that was capable of collecting trash from a waterway.

Attendance Reminders Attendance Reminders

The Virginia Department of Education's public school accountability reporting system defines "chronic absenteeism" as missing 10 percent or more of the school year for any reason. Therefore, it is imperative for students to attend school daily. Middle and high school students who miss more than fifty (50) percent of a class may be counted as absent in that class.

Any student who exceeds eighteen (18) absences for any reason risks losing credit for a course

regardless of their course grade.

Complete information regarding attendance can be found in the Student Code of Conduct linked here.

Seat time information and waiver request information has been sent out to those it applies to many times. If you have a question about seat time please contact your students counselor or admin. All waiver request will be reviewed by the end of the school year and the parent will be contacted with the determination prior to report cards being released.

All students will be expected to turn in their Chromebook and charger during the last week of school. We will have Chromebook collection set up on Wednesday and Thursday next week. If the Chromebook or charger is not turned in or is turned in with damage a replacement fee will be added to the student account.

Dress Code Questions Dress Code Questions

Thank you for your support with improving dress code compliance. Below you will see the full dress code policy set by KWCPS. We ask all students and parents review the dress code to avoid corrections as this takes away from their instructional time.

When your student is dress coded they are given several options.

Option 1- Change- Often we find students know they are out of compliance and have a change of clothes with them

Option 2- If they do not have something with them they can look through items that have been donated or purchased for dress code correction and select something to change into. We are always taking donations of new athletic wear (leggings, sweatpants, t-shirts) for this purpose.

Option 3- Find a friend that has something to borrow and change into if it's before class starts.

Option 4- Call a parent and have the parent either bring them something to change into or sign them out to go home and change. Please know just because a student calls you, we do not expect you to come bring clothes or take them home to change as we know this is an inconvenience to your day and work.

Option 5- Spend the day in ISS. -This is always the last option as we prefer students be in class.

We always try to handle dress code as kindly and carefully as possible to avoid any embarrassment. We know it's difficult to find appropriate length shorts in stores that are also in style. This has been a problem since many of us (adults) were in school.

STUDENT DRESS CODE

File JFCA-R

(Approved June 3, 2024)

All students who attend any public school in King William County are expected to dress

appropriately for an educational environment. Clothing restrictions are not intended to

infringe upon their personal liberties; however, certain restrictions must be enacted to

uphold reasonable standards of decorum and prevent situations which may be

indecent, unsafe, disturbing, or disruptive to the educational setting of the school.

Any clothing that interferes with or disrupts the educational environment is prohibited.

The school administration reserves the right to define appropriate and inappropriate

dress; the administration’s decision is final.

All students will be appropriately dressed while attending school and school

sanctioned events. Dress should be appropriate for the age group involved and

should not be a cause for disruptive influence on the educational program. Dress

for field trips will be decided by the school administration.

Guidelines and expectations for student attire in King William County Public Schools

shall:

● permit any student to wear any religiously and ethnically specific or significant

head covering or hairstyle, including hijabs, yarmulkes, head wraps, braids, locs,

and cornrows as defined by Code of Virginia §22.1-279 Subsection 1. Other

head coverings such as hats, caps, visors, hoods, and the like may not be worn

in the school buildings during the school day.

● maintain gender neutrality by subjecting any student to the same set of rules and

standards regardless of gender, avoiding a disparate impact on students of a

particular gender.

● prohibit tops that may expose the chest, cleavage, midriff, naval or waistline.

● prohibit bottoms that expose the hips, midriff, buttocks, lower back, upper thigh

and navel whether standing, sitting, or bending. All bottoms, to include dresses,

skirts, and shorts, must be an appropriate length and may not expose the areas

identified herein.

● prohibit sleepwear, including blankets worn about the body.

● require appropriate footwear to be worn at all times. Bedroom slippers are not

permitted in school.

● require all undergarments to remain fully covered by appropriate clothing.

● prohibit clothing that depicts language, images, or innuendo that are vulgar,

discriminatory, or obscene; that contain threats such as gang symbols; that

depict illegal or violent behavior, or items prohibited in a school setting, such as

weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia, alcohol, tobacco/tobacco products, or

advertisements or logos of these items.

● prohibit items of clothing that would impair the health and safety of the student

during school activities to include excessive jewelry or accessories such as

animal collars, chains, safety pins, or fish hooks.

● prohibit military or inappropriate insignia on clothing (in accordance with federal

law).

We will load the buses right after graduation practice and Senior Walk at the HS; then head down to CSPS, AES, and HHMS. At that time seniors will walk the hallways in their graduation apparel as staff, teachers, and students line the hallways before loading the buses to return to KWHS. KWHS Community Alert KWHS Community Alert

Dear parents and community members,

It has been brought to our attention there is a company "Campusbox/Elite Sports" that appears to have taken advantage of several community businesses. This company has no affiliation with KWHS. They have called local companies claiming affiliation and asking for sponsorship. Companies have donated money with the assumption their company will be featured in banners and other promotional products during KWHS athletic events. Campusbox/Elite Sports takes the majority of the money for themselves then sends KWHS a small banner and small inexpensive items. The cost of the banner and small items only add up to a very small percentage of the money donated. KWHS never see's the remainder of the donation or sponsorship. In addition, without a formal agreement KWHS cannot display the banner sent or share the promotional items. If you or or company would like to become a sponsor please reach out directly to Mr. Patrick Kane the Athletic Director so he can set you up with our contracted services. If you need more information regarding Campusbox/Elite Sports just google the company name and check under the Better Business Bureau.

Dress Code Reminders

Dress Code (JFCA-R)

KWCPS respects a student’s right to express oneself in their dress. It is important, however, that clothing not detract from the learning environment or create a disruption to or distraction from the learning process. The administration reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of all student dress whether or not it is listed in this regulation. Clothing and accessories may not:

  • Display vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene language or images.

  • Promote illegal or violent conduct.

  • Contain threats or gang symbols.

  • Promote the unlawful use of weapons, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or drug paraphernalia.

  • Expose shoulders, cleavage, private parts, the midriff, undergarments, and in the case of pants, the waistband should not fall below the hips.

  • Contain pointed studs or other sharp objects.

  • Be sheer or see-through, including torn fabric that exposes the skin.

  • Include caps or other head coverings unless required for religious or medical reasons unless deemed acceptable in the school dress code.

Understanding the A/B schedule when there are inclement weather days Understanding the A/B schedule when there are inclement weather days

Facts about the A/B schedule:

  • The A/B schedule is created at the beginning of the year for the entire year.
  • The number of A days and B days is divided evenly.
  • The A/B schedule is shared with staff and community at the beginning of the year.
  • Staff uses this schedule to plan meetings, testing, guest speakers, field trips, ect.
  • KWHS has several teachers who work part time either on A or B day and students who only come to school on either A day or B day. Many, have other obligations on their "off days" such as work or clients.

When we have an inclement weather day it is in the best interest of all staff, students, and community members to skip that A or B day vs changing the year long A/B schedule. If we were to change the A/B schedule, those who have other obligations would have to make other arrangements in their work schedule or rescheduling clients last minute. In addition, meetings, field trips, guest speakers, testing may have to be rescheduled to accommodate the changing schedule. We find this not to be in the best interest of staff, students, and community.

Cell Phone Reminders

The use of cell phones (and all other personal electronic devices including headphones, earbuds, smart watches, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices) is prohibited during the regular school day. Upon students’ arrival at school, and continuing through dismissal from school, cell phones and other electronic devices are required to be out of visible sight and either silenced or powered off. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be placed out of sight in a backpack or other personal bag. Failure to comply with this expectation will result in the following actions:

  1. First offense Parent/guardian contacted, verbal warning, and the device will be confiscated until the end of the school day.
  2. Second offense Parent/guardian contacted, the device will be confiscated, and the the parent or guardian must retrieve the device from school.
  3. Third offense Parent/guardian contacted, the device will be confiscated, and the parent or guardian must retrieve the device from school. In addition, for a period of 30 calendar days, the student shall be restricted from possessing a cell phone or electronic device at school during instructional hours. The student will be required to check their device into the office at arrival, and retrieve it following dismissal. Students who violate this restriction will be subject to further discipline, including suspension (BSO3).
Cell phones and other electronic devices may be used
  • when students are attending non-instructional after-school events/activities;
  • when students have a documented medical exception approved by the school principal and school nurse;
  • when students are riding the school bus, as long as such use is not distracting or disruptive. Students must use earbuds or headphones when listening to music or watching videos with sound while on the school bus.

If a student needs to get in touch with their parent during the school day for emergency purposes the student must ask to speak to a counselor, the nurse, or an administrator so arrangements can be made to use a school phone. If a parent must get in touch with a student during the school day the parent must call the front office for assistance.

New Safety Measures at Varsity Football and Basketball Games New Safety Measures at Varsity Football and Basketball Games

Effective August 15th 2024

The safety of students, staff, and guests is a top priority for King William County Public Schools (KWCPS). Building upon the school division’s current safety measures, and aligned to established practices at collegiate and professional venues, as well as a growing number of K-12 school divisions including many in our own Tidewater District, KWCPS has adopted several safety measures for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

  1. All spectators attending Varsity high school sponsored events at the KWHS stadium and gymnasium will be subject to search and security screening prior to entering the facility to check for weapons, dangerous objects, and other prohibited items. Any spectator in possession of a prohibited item will not be allowed to enter and may be subject to law enforcement intervention. This screening process may involve wanding and bag checks.

  2. All spectators wishing to enter the facility must adhere to the following bag policy. Each spectator will be permitted to bring the following:

    • One (1) clear tote bag not larger than 12” x 6” x 12”

    • One (1) small clutch-style purse or handbag for privacy, not larger than 4.5” x 6.5”

  • Prohibited items include, but are not limited to:
    • All tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, vapes, Juul, smokeless tobacco products, etc.)

    • All alcohol and alcohol products

    • Weapons of any type or other dangerous objects such as laser pointers

    • Drugs, to include marijuana or marijuana products

    • Coolers and outside food or drink products (exception: one store-bought, sealed water bottle is allowed)

    • Pets and other non-service animals

  • Exceptions will be made for credentialed media, medical items, and baby items with proper inspection at designated areas. Items such as banners, blankets, seat cushions, and wagons are also subject to inspection.
  • Prohibited bags include:
    • Purses (other than the permissible clutch)

    • Bags, backpacks, cinch bags, fanny packs, mesh bags, containers larger than 4.5"x6.5"

    • Briefcases, computer bags, luggage

    • Grocery bags, trash bags, tinted plastic bag

  • Please note that there is no storage location at the ticket/check-in entry point for prohibited bags or items. These must be stored in your vehicle or kept at home.

FAQ's

  • Why did KWHS adopt these safety measures?

    • Our safety and security procedures are reviewed and updated regularly to ensure the most up-to-date and best practices in accordance with the Tidewater District are being utilized to promote the safety and security of students, families, staff, and visitors. The increased safety measures will further mitigate the likelihood of prohibited items entering the venue and result in a more efficient screening process.

  • Why does the requirement only apply to the Varsity events at the stadium or gymnasium?

    • The increased safety measures are initially being implemented at Varsity football and basketball games in the stadium/gymnasium because these venues typically have the largest crowds. These requirements may be implemented at other events in the future.

  • What happens if I show up at a venue with a bag that is not permitted?

    • Guests who arrive at KWHS stadium/gymnasium entrances with prohibited bags or items will not be permitted to enter the venue.

  • Do I have to put everything I'm carrying into the permissible bags?

    • No. We are limiting only the type of bags carried into the stadiums, not items that you normally bring to a game. You are still permitted to carry keys, wallets, phones, etc. in your pockets. Please be prepared, however, to remove these items for screening if handheld metal detecting wands are in use.

  • Does this apply to athletes or event participants?

    • These procedures only apply to spectators, not to student-athletes and staff participating in the event.

  • What about items needed for babies and small children?

    • A baby carrier, detachable infant car seat, or stroller is permitted in the venue if it is accompanying an infant/small child. Other items needed for a baby or small child may be carried in a clear bag. All baby items are subject to inspection prior to entry.

  • Can fans bring blankets and large jackets during cold weather?

    • Yes. Guests are welcome to carry blankets outside of a clear bag. Guests may bring extra coats and jackets into the venues by tossing them over a shoulder or arm. Guests should be prepared to have jackets with pockets searched if handheld metal detecting wands are in use.

  • Are seat cushions/seat backs allowed to be carried into the venue?

    • Yes. Seat cushions and stadium seats are permitted but subject to be inspection prior to entry.

  • What happens if the handheld metal detecting wand used at the security checkpoint goes off?

    • When a metal detecting wand is set off, guests will be asked to step aside for a brief secondary screening.

  • Where do guests with accessibility needs enter?

    • Guests with accessibility needs can enter at an accessible entrance. Event staff will assist through the screening process.

  • I have a medical device. Would it be affected if I am screened with a handheld metal detecting wand?

    • Guests with medical concerns should alert event staff personnel.
