The Spencer Scoop
Spencer Elementary August 21, 2026
Note from the Principal
Hello Spencer Roadrunner Families,
This summer has been full of some of my favorite things...time with family, sunshine, and lots of adventures around town! Our family enjoyed a wonderful trip to Disney World in July, and we were lucky enough to bring my mom along while my brother flew in to join us. We spent time on the lake, rode bikes, ate lots of yummy food, and enjoyed plenty of sunshine and time together. Before we know it, we'll be trading our swimsuits for snow bags, so we are soaking up every last bit of summer!
As we begin to get closer to September, our Spencer family is starting to feel the excitement of a new school year. We are especially excited to welcome our new Roadrunners and, of course, to see all of our returning Roadrunners. We have missed them so much!
You may have noticed a few more cars in our parking lot lately! Our staff is already back and working hard to prepare for the year ahead. They are creating beautiful learning spaces, finalizing class lists, organizing materials, and putting so much thought into making sure each of our Roadrunners has a wonderful start to the school year. Our teachers spend countless hours thoughtfully working through class placements to create the best possible fit and experience for every student.
See below in the Scoop for important dates and information to start the school year!
We hope your families have had a summer filled with fun adventures, laughter, relaxation, and time together. We are so excited for another year of learning, growing, and making memories together at Spencer.

Important Information
Welcome Back, Roadrunners!
All signs are pointing to an exciting and productive school year! Our dedicated staff are already planning and preparing for your child(ren). We are all excited to have students back in our classrooms and hallways, filling them with energy and enthusiasm for learning, as well as, their infectious laughter and love of life. The first day of school will be Tuesday, September 8th. As we near the start of the school year, we wanted to provide a few quick back to school updates.
Student Placement
Our teachers do our placements and spend so much time grouping students for the following year. There was an opportunity to provide input on your student at the end of the year so we will not be moving students that have been placed. This year the Back to School Packet opened August 3rd, all families must fill this out even if you are a returning family. This can be found on Parent Connect. Placements will be released through Parent Connect on the afternoon of Friday, August 28th.
Classroom Supply Lists
We are always so appreciative of the generosity of our community, however, know that any classroom material lists are optional and all necessary items are provided by the district for all students’ success. You can find classroom supply lists on our Spencer Classroom Information under the teacher pages.
Junior Kindergarten/Kindergarten Meet and Greet
JK/K Meet and Greet is a great opportunity for students and families to banish those first day jitters by meeting the teacher and visiting the classroom. This event will be held on Wednesday, September 2nd from 5:30-6:30PM.
New Student (Grades 1st - 4th) Meet and Greet
If you have a student who is new to Spencer this year (not including JK and K), feel free to join us at the JK/K Meet and Greet event on Wednesday, September 2nd from 5:30-6:30PM. While 1st-4th grade teachers will not be there, you will have an opportunity to meet Principal Boyd where she will go over drop off and pick up procedures and answer any questions you may have, and you can tour the school.
Junior Kindergarten/Kindergarten First Day of School
There is so much wrapped up into the first day of school in kindergarten. A kindergarten first day is important to teachers, students, and parents! JK/K students will have an alternate schedule on the first day of school. Students will join their teachers outside at 9:30 AM and will be dismissed when the bell rings at 3:58 PM to follow their typical end of day routine, whether they travel home by bus, parent pick up, attend Friendship Center, etc...
Specials Enrichment Opportunity Grades K-4
Your student has the opportunity to attend a Specials Enrichment class this year. During the class, students will be able to explore and deepen their understanding of the content.
This is a multi-age enrichment class that will meet on certain days and times. Your student will be leaving their regularly scheduled class or special to attend. This is a voluntary program. If you are interested in choosing one of these offerings for your student, please complete this form.
Please fill out a form for each student you would like to participate.
Here is the Brighton website link for more information.
Space is limited, and students will be enrolled on a first come first served basis. Please note that this scheduling change will be permanent for the remainder of the year.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your building principal. Once students are placed and the class list is determined, families will receive a welcome letter from the special's teacher.

Welcome Back Spencer Families! Our PTO Board has been working on some really fun events for the upcoming year! This year's theme is Embrace The Journey and you will see that incorporated into all the things we do.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Our first event of the school year is our Family Picnic, which will be held from 6pm - 8pm on Wednesday, September 23rd. This is a great time to meet other Spencer families while enjoying a hot dog meal, yard games, and crafts. This year it will be extra special to host the event during our district's Pink Week! Look for a bake sale, bracelet shop, coin wars, and other fun activities to support our district-wide fundraising efforts for the Trinity Cancer Center! It's a really fun night and we hope to see you there!
Also, please save the date for our 14th Annual Roadrunner Run! This incredibly fun event will be held in the afternoon of Friday, October 9th. It is one of our biggest school fundraisers of the year and so much fun for the kids. Volunteer sign ups will be posted soon and fundraising paperwork will be going home the first week of school.
SPONSORS NEEDED
The Roadrunner Run is such a huge success not only because of our students' fundraising efforts, but also because of the tremendous support Spencer receives from community business sponsors too! If you or someone you know is a business owner and would like to become a sponsor, please reach out to us at spencerroadpto@gmail.com. For just a $250 donation, your company's logo will go on the backs of nearly 700 t-shirts that Spencer students, teachers and staff will wear on special days throughout the year, including the Roadrunner Run! Please see the attached letter below for more information and for additional sponsor benefits! Thank you for your support!
STUDENT T-SHIRT ORDERS
Each year the PTO creates a special shirt to be worn on certain days throughout the year (Roadrunner Run, field trips, field day and more!). Each grade level is represented by a different color, and all students will receive a shirt regardless of ability to pay. So, please submit sizes for all students. This year we are asking for an $8 donation per shirt to help offset costs. Orders are done through the enrollment packet PTO tab on Parent Connect and payment is through Zeffy.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We. Love. Volunteers! Our amazing events wouldn't be so successful without the help of our incredible parents. We would appreciate help this year with all these great events planned. Please take a moment to fill out our Volunteer Interest Form . If you have any questions on the committees, please reach out to spencerroadpto@gmail.com and we would be more than happy to go over any questions you may have.

Nurse’s Notes
Hello Spencer families! I’m so happy to be back for another school year! It was wonderful getting to know so many of our students and families last year, and I’m looking forward to seeing familiar faces again. I’m also excited to welcome our newest Spencer students, and look forward to getting to know them and their families throughout the year. For those of you I have not met yet, my name is Megan Virzi, and I am the nurse here at Spencer. My goal is to make the clinic a welcoming place where every student feels comfortable and cared for, to support their learning and growth.
Medication at School
If your child needs medication during the school day—whether regularly scheduled or as needed (PRN)—a completed Medication Authorization Form is required. This includes over-the-counter medications as well as prescription medications. The Medication Authorization Form can be found HERE.
If your child has an Emergency Action Plan for a condition such as asthma, epilepsy, allergies/anaphylaxis, etc., and medication is already included as part of that action plan, a separate Medication Authorization Form is not required.
I will be available in the Spencer Clinic on Tuesday, September 1, from 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. for parents/guardians who would like to drop off medications and/or emergency action plans. Please feel free to stop by during that time!
I’m looking forward to another wonderful school year and to keeping our Spencer students healthy, safe, and ready to learn!
