A Wonderful Start to the 2026–2027 School Year!

Hello Bonsall High School Families and Students,

What an exciting week at Bonsall High School!

We hosted our first Movie Night on Friday, giving students an opportunity to relax, connect, and enjoy time together. We are also looking forward to our seniors gathering for Senior Sunrise this Friday morning, a special tradition as they begin their final year at BHS.

This week, we launched our new Flex classes, and students selected from a variety of options based on their interests and needs. Flex gives students opportunities to participate in enrichment activities, clubs, academic support, and targeted intervention. These student- and teacher-designed classes encourage students to explore new interests, connect with peers and staff across grade levels and academies, and receive additional support when needed. We are excited to see how our Flex program continues to grow!

We are proud of the wonderful start we have had and look forward to an amazing year together.

Go Legion!

Proud Principal,

Angela James

Hello, Bonsall High School community!

My name is Dr. Cassiopeia Guthrie, and I am thrilled to join Bonsall High this year as Assistant Principal. Throughout my career in education, I have been a classroom teacher, instructional and district leader, university educator, and school administrator, and I am passionate about creating schools where students feel known, supported, challenged, and connected. I earned my doctorate in Educational Leadership while working in and for public schools, and my research is focused on teachers, school leadership, and the organizational conditions that help educators and students thrive. Outside of school, I am also a writer and theatre critic, a sports enthusiast, and a mom of two teenagers!

I am excited to get to know our students and families, support our incredible staff, and become part of the Bonsall community. Please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself when you see me on campus.

I look forward to a wonderful year together!

Dr. Guthrie, Ed.D

Assistant Principal

ASB Is Kicking Off an Exciting Year!

Our ASB students are already hard at work planning activities that will bring our school community together and make this a memorable year at BHS!

ASB is preparing for our annual Club Rush. This will give students the opportunity to learn about the many clubs available at BHS, meet students with similar interests, and discover new ways to get involved. Whether students are interested in academics, leadership, service, creativity, or simply trying something new, there will be opportunities for everyone.

We encourage all students to participate, make connections, and take advantage of everything BHS has to offer. Be sure to check the Upcoming Events section for Movie Night and Club Rush dates and details!

EARLY COLLEGE EARLY COLLEGE

🎓 Early College Kicks Off a New Semester at BHS 🎓 Early College Kicks Off a New Semester at BHS

TODAY marks the start of a new semester of Early College at Bonsall High School! Beginning Monday, BHS students will head to the Fallbrook Education Center, log into online courses, and attend college classes right here on the BHS campus as they take their next steps as Palomar College students. This fall, 71 BHS students are taking Palomar College courses, including 15 students beginning their Early College journey for the first time. That means more than one in four BHS students is participating in Early College this semester, collectively accounting for 91 college course enrollments!

Students are pursuing an impressive range of subjects, including criminal justice, psychology, public speaking, college algebra, calculus, business, child development, anthropology, American Indian Studies, art, music, and world languages. One of our newest participants even began planning for Early College last year as an 8th grader and is now starting their first college course as a BHS freshman.

Students are also making progress toward college credentials while still in high school. Three students are beginning a new Cinema Studies certificate pathway, taking courses such as Art of the Cinema, History of Film, and Creative Writing for Television and Cinema. Meanwhile, many returning students are on track to complete their Graphic Design pathway by the end of this semester.

As classes begin, Early College students are reminded to check Palomar Canvas and Palomar Email regularly, review their syllabi carefully, and keep track of important deadlines. Students who need textbooks, account assistance, or support navigating their college courses can always stop by the Early College Office.

Best of luck to our Early College students as they begin another semester of challenging themselves, exploring new interests, and earning college credit while still at BHS!

FLEX Period Is Coming to BHS!

This year, all Bonsall High School students will participate in FLEX five days a week. FLEX is a dedicated part of the school day designed to provide students with greater choice, personalized support, and opportunities to connect with others.

  • During FLEX, students may participate in enrichment activities such as art, music, media, fitness, sports, STEM, coding, college and career exploration, leadership, clubs, games, wellness, and student- or teacher-led activities.

  • FLEX also provides time for academic intervention, reteaching, organization, study support, and help with specific skills or learning targets.

  • Students who are eligible to choose an activity will use the 5-Star Students platform to view available opportunities and make their selections for the following week during FLEX on Thursdays. Students should check 5-Star regularly because their FLEX location may change based on their selections or support needs. PARENTS YOU CAN CHECK 5-STAR as well to see the available classes.

  • Teachers may assign a student to intervention when additional assistance is needed. Teacher-assigned intervention takes priority over a student-selected activity and is an opportunity for students to receive focused help from a teacher who is committed to their success.

  • Because FLEX is part of the regular school day, attendance and participation are required. Students must report to the correct location on time and participate appropriately.

We are excited for FLEX to give every BHS student time to get support, explore interests, build relationships, and try something new: Every Student. Every Day.

Heat Safety Heat Safety

An excessive heat warning is in effect this week. In accordance with San Diego County Office of Education heat-safety guidance, Bonsall High School will closely monitor weather conditions and modify PE activities as needed. Staff will also monitor students for signs of heat-related illness.

Cell Phone Policy Cell Phone Policy

All cell phones will be placed in the classroom pockets this year. All cell phones will be placed in the classroom pockets this year.

📵 Bonsall High School Cell Phone & Personal Device Policy

Effective: July 1, 2026 | Aligned with CA AB 3216 and adopted by our BUSD School Board.

At Bonsall High School, our goal is to create a focused, respectful, and academically engaging environment. In alignment with California’s Phone-Free Schools Act (AB 3216) and regional best practices, BHS will enforce the following zero-tolerance cell phone policy during instructional time beginning in the 2026–27 school year.

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices: Students are allowed to come to the office to use their cell phones to make a call.

  • Cell phones must be turned off and put into the classroom cell phone pocket holder (Unless required for a classroom activity).

  • Cell phones are not to be used out in the hallways, Quad, Forum or outside areas during class time.

  • Cell phones may NOT be used in the restrooms.

  • Cell phones are permitted to be out and used during passing periods and during your lunch.

  • Cell phones may be confiscated if they are visible during class time and brought to the office to be kept in a locked cabinet for the day. It is YOUR responsibility to pick it up at the end of the school day in the front office.

  • Cell phones will be returned at the end of the day to the student unless it is a repeated violation.

  • Repeated violations - Parent pick up of cell phone in the front office.

  • Students refusing to hand over their phone or electronic device to a staff member will be disciplined for defiance.

*Bonsall High School assumes no liability for lost, damaged,or stolen cell phones, earphones/buds, or electronic devices*

🎧 Other Electronic Devices

  • Earbuds, headphones, and smartwatches are also considered personal devices and must follow the same “off and away” expectations unless authorized by a teacher.

  • Listening to music, watching videos, or taking calls during class is strictly prohibited.

🚫 Enforcement and Consequences

BHS will implement a progressive discipline approach grounded in PBIS and Restorative Practices:

  1. 1st Violation – Verbal warning and reminder of policy

  2. 2nd Violation – Device is held by the teacher and returned at the end of the period

  3. 3rd Violation – Device is turned in to the front office; parent/guardian is contacted

  4. 4th Violation – Parent must pick up the device; student may lose device privileges for a designated period

  5. Repeated Violations – Student may be restricted from extracurricular activities or subject to further disciplinary action

💬 Communication Expectations

We understand that families may need to reach their students. During the school day, please contact the main office for urgent messages. Students can also request to use the office phone if needed.

🧭 Why the policy exists

The policy was developed to improve focus, academic performance, and mental health by minimizing technology-related distractions. It also aligns with California's Phone‑Free School Act (AB 3216), which requires statewide limits on student phone use by July 1, 2026.

This policy supports:

  • Focused learning environments

  • Reduction in cyberbullying and digital distraction

  • Improved academic performance and mental well-being

It aligns with California’s AB 3216, which requires schools to set boundaries on personal device use to protect instructional time and student wellness.

Bonsall High School is excited to begin another year of learning, growth, and new opportunities for our students.

Thank you to the students, families, teachers, and staff whose feedback and participation helped shape the future of our school. Because of this collaboration, BHS is proud to continue with the BHS Academies this fall, an exciting step forward in preparing students for college, careers, and life beyond high school.

Students will have the opportunity to explore real-world pathways through four academies:

  • Medical Sciences Academy
  • Law & Leadership Academy
  • Computer Science & Engineering Academy
  • Arts & Media Academy

Each academy will offer hands-on learning experiences, college-credit opportunities, industry connections, internships, and career-aligned coursework designed to inspire students and prepare them for future success.

Students will learn which academy they have been accepted into on the first day of school.

Whether students are exploring anatomy, creating digital media, developing software, engineering solutions, or preparing for leadership and public service, the BHS Academies will help them discover their interests, develop valuable skills, and create a meaningful path toward their future.

Stay informed and connected, there are many exciting opportunities ahead. Here’s to an inspiring and successful school year at Bonsall High School!

Parent Information and Networking Group (PING) at Bonsall High School

The Parent Information and Networking Group (PING) is a group of parents and guardians who believe in Leaning In during the high school years. Our meetings provide vital information for families so they can navigate their student’s high school journey successfully.

We work in collaboration with the Bonsall Education Foundation (BEF); BEF is a 501c3 non-profit and all donations are tax-deductible. This teamwork allows us to benefit from several fundraisers throughout the year, including the BHS Car Show (FALL) and a golf tournament for Athletics (Spring).

Our Banner Sponsorship Program raises money so that our teachers can request curriculum-based needs for their classrooms. We ask local businesses to sponsor at a Platinum, Gold or Silver level.

More information to come about our meeting dates and times!

We hope you can attend and make an impact on our school community. If you have any questions, email pingbonsall@gmail.com.

ATTENTION PARENTS!

New this year for both BHS and SMS: Students will not be released 15 minutes before the end of the school day. The latest a student can be picked up is:

Monday- Wednesday and Friday= 3:30 pm

Thursday= 2:00 pm

This ensures we have enough time to call for your student and sure the safety of our campus at the end of the school day.

Only emergency vehicles, buses, those with handicap placards, and those with other special placards have access to the upper lot, emergency lane closest to the front of our schools.

This decision to enforce our existing parking lot plan aligns with the recommendations of our community safety partners and will increase our ability to maintain a safe and secure site:

  • When dropping students off, please use the lower levels of the parking lot.
  • When visiting either the middle or the high school office, please park in the lower levels, bring your ID to the front, and check in with the appropriate staff

Gates accessing the upper lane will continue to be closed to secure the campus. We appreciate your partnership and support in our efforts to provide the highest levels of safety for our students
