Resources & Celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month Resources & Celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized September 15-October 15, honoring Latinx populations and their valuable contributions to society. At HF, we're fortunate to have students, staff and a surrounding community to share their diverse cultures with our Vikings. HF's Library has curated a special collection of resources to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Check out the resource page here. There's a number of fiction and nonfiction books on display available for checkout that feature Hispanic/Latine characters, authors, and stories.

Some of our Vikings spent time after school and during lunch creating the beautiful paper flowers and paper banners (papel picado) that are currently on the book display and throughout the library!

Library staff, Alicia Rodriguez and Jolyce Abernathy, would like to thank these students for all of their hard work, initiative, and creativity. They each exhibit a number of the Profile of a Viking traits such as Diversity & Inclusion, Communication & Collaboration, and Citizenship & Character!

The Voyage - Yes, Chef!

HF Alum David Wasserman, HF '00, Executive Sous Chef at the Hyatt Regency Chicago joined students in our newly renovated kitchens to share his tips for getting into the professional culinary industry. He shared insights into culinary, hospitality and hotel careers. He even cooked up a barbecue carrot dish for students to try!

Classroom Happenings: IB Economics Study Product Demand Classroom Happenings: IB Economics Study Product Demand

zoom_out_map

In Mr. Anello's 3rd Period International Baccalaureate® Economics course, students participated in a hands-on research assignment to create demand curves for various products. The groups used a Frozen 2 toy, a bottle of Coca-Cola, a travel mug, and a toy penguin as their test items. This activity aligns with the IB Learner profile trait of being inquirers, as students conducted research and directly experienced the concept of demand through their investigation.

The students began by convening in small groups to determine a range of prices at which their classmates might be willing to purchase the items. Using these price points, they then surveyed their peers about the quantities they would buy at each price. After completing the task and presenting their findings, the students explored the concept of the demand curve. This curve visually represents a principle that consumers intuitively understand: people tend to purchase more of a good when prices are lower, and less when prices are higher. Demand is a fundamental concept in market systems, illustrating how consumers make economic decisions based on different price points.

We're excited to share that two of our seniors have been selected by the College Board as BigFuture Ambassadors: Congratulations to Tolani Babawale and Grace Cairo! HF Recognized as FAFSA Completion Medalist HF Recognized as FAFSA Completion Medalist

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has again recognized HF as FAFSA Completion Medalist. Over the past four graduating classes, HF has an average of 75% of its students completing the FAFSA. While some families choose not to complete the form, we are still well above the state average of 70%! This recognition is a testament to the hard work and preparation that our students, families, and staff are doing to prepare for paying for college. Congratulations to everyone who made this achievement possible.

Save the Date: College Night 2024

Our annual College Night is happening Monday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. This year, we're excited to host nearly 160 colleges and universities. This is a great way to research colleges and military options and have your questions answered. A complete list of colleges attending can be found here.

Just ahead of College Night is Career Day: All students will have the opportunity to visit with 65 professionals in careers that range from doctors, lawyers, city officials and the trades. All students will meet with these representatives during their PE classes during that school day.

During the College Fair, instead of filling out information cards, colleges will scan your unique barcode to send you more information about their schools. This will save you time and allow for more conversations with the representatives. The day after the fair, you will receive a report with information on the colleges with whom you scanned. Come prepared and please register for a barcode before the fair at www.StriveFair.com. Please contact the Post-Secondary Counselors, Brad Kain or Kevin Coy with any questions.

Sportsmanship - Sport a Winning Attitude! Sportsmanship - Sport a Winning Attitude!

Good sportsmanship is the attitude and behavior that exemplifies positive support for the

interscholastic athletic programs of Homewood-Flossmoor High School as well as the

individuals who participate. Rooted in the Profile of a Viking competencies that we expect for all

Vikings - students, staff, families and spectators alike - people involved in all facets of the

interscholastic athletic programs are expected to demonstrate respect for others and display good

sportsmanship. It is essential that student-athletes, coaches, parents, student groups and fans in

general are constantly reminded to “Sport a Winning Attitude”!

Sportsmanship is an important issue of concern in interscholastic athletics. Positive experiences

do not occur by chance, rather they are a result of the educational structure, the right perspective,

the right leadership and the true understanding of sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship is not

merely a campaign — it is the essence of what educational athletics is about. Let all of us who

have the opportunity, promote the ideals of sportsmanship so that today’s students and

tomorrow’s citizens may build a better society. The administration, staff, and coaches trust that

you will do your part in promoting good sportsmanship within our school and community.

Remember, Sportsmanship is EVERYONE’s responsibility!

Behavior expectations of the spectator

  • Interscholastic athletics are learning experiences for students and mistakes are sometimes made. Praise student athletes in their attempt to improve themselves as students, as athletes and as people as you would praise a student working in the classroom.
  • Demonstrate positive fan support for the players, coaches, and other spectators.
  • Refrain from making any kind of derogatory remarks to players or coaches during the game.
  • Respect the integrity of game officials. Understand that they are doing their best to help promote the student-athlete and admire their willingness to participate in full view of the public.
  • Be a positive behavior role model through your own actions and by censuring those around you at events where behavior is unbecoming. Adolescents learn proper behavior from watching adults.
  • Show respect for the players, coaches, other spectators, and officials. Respect their roles even if you disagree with their judgment.
