We want to welcome our newest teacher to the Hermosa Staff, Ms. Kayden Kursave.

Where are you from?

I have lived around the Rapid City area most of my life. I even attended Hermosa Elementary School for a few years. I completed high school in Timber Lake South Dakota. From there I moved to Spearfish to obtain a teaching degree at Black Hills State University.

Why did you want to teach here?

When I went to school in Hermosa I loved the community. I always wanted to return to the Custer School District because the people are welcoming, kind, and willing to help wherever they can. In 2023, I student taught in two different classrooms, and I still had the same feelings about this town.

What are you most looking forward to?

Now that I am back in this community, I am looking forward to impacting students the same way I was impacted. Each student is greeted with a big smile and shown how much they each mean to our school. I want to help students reach their greatest potential. Each student is unique, and I value what every student brings to our classroom, school, and district. While I could teach anywhere, there is no other place I would rather be than right here in the Custer School District.

Anything else you’d like to say or let people know?

I would just like to add that I am forever grateful to the people in this community. Not only did you help me when in need, but you also cheered me on as I achieved my biggest dreams and goals in life. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your love, support, guidance, and wisdom.

Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman

What a great first full week of school! It has been wonderful seeing all the smiling faces and getting to know our new students. It is going to be a fabulous school year.

As we start, the first couple weeks have been heavy on school procedures and expectations. We proudly follow our SWARM Values and commit daily to being safe, wise, accountable, and respectful, and to make a difference in ourselves and our school. Have you talked with your student about what it means to follow SWARM? A huge part of student success is reinforcement at home on the importance of doing one's best at school and choosing to be respectful and accountable.

Counseling lessons have been a success as students refamiliarize themselves with our expectations, learn about what I do here at the school and ways I can offer support, and complete needs assessments that give me an idea of areas our students are succeeding in, and spots they may need more assistance.

In the next two weeks of counseling lessons, Junior Kindergarten through 2nd grade will read "What Should Danny Do? School Day." This is an interactive book that allows students to choose for Danny. In helping him make his choices, students can see the impact our choices have as the story explores how the negative choice influences Danny's day and others around him as well as how the positive choice leads to a happy ending for all. We all have the power to choose, and our choices not only impact us but also our friends, classmates, teachers, and parents.

Enjoy the long weekend!
