Principal's Message
Dear Hiteon Families,
It was great to see our community out in full support of our PTC Trunk or Treat! We know it takes a lot of work to pull off such a huge community event, and we want to thank all those who contributed to its success. Thank you!!
We are excited to welcome you to our upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences! This is an invaluable opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher, discuss progress, and collaborate on ways to further support their growth and learning journey.
What to Expect:
- Individualized Updates: Your child's teacher will share insights on their academic performance, participation, and social development.
- Goals and Achievements: Together, we'll review goals set at the beginning of the year and celebrate achievements.
- Next Steps: We'll discuss any specific areas for focus to ensure continued success and address any questions or concerns you may have.
Tips for a Great Conference:
- Bring any questions or topics you’d like to discuss.
- Feel free to share observations about your child’s learning habits or experiences at home.
- If there are particular areas where your child needs extra support, let us know so we can work together effectively.
Strong partnerships between home and school play a crucial role in helping children thrive. Thank you for your continued involvement and commitment to your child's education. We look forward to seeing you!
We do not have school on Thursday and Friday because of conferences. As we continue to support the well-being and success of our students, it’s important to highlight the benefits of limiting screen time and incorporating morning exercise. Starting the day with physical activity boosts energy, improves focus, and sets a positive tone for learning.
Research has shown that children who engage in regular morning exercise are more attentive and better able to absorb information. Reducing screen time, especially before school, we help minimize distractions and promote healthier sleep patterns, contributing to better academic performance and well-being. Maybe Thursday and Friday can be an opportunity for our students to limit screen time and wake up to some exercise!
Let’s encourage our children to start their days actively and screen-free!
Finally, our goal is to meet with 100% of our families for conferences. If you cannot make it to your conference, please contact your child’s teacher and determine the best time to connect with your teacher. If it is impossible to have a face-to-face or Zoom conference, please set up a phone conference.
Thank you for all that you do to support the growth and learning of our students and have a wonderful Veteran’s Day weekend!
Sincerely,
Janet Maza and Jenny Read-Emslie

3rd Grade Testing on 11/4 & 11/5
To All 3rd grade Parent(s)/Guardians,
In October or November, all 3rd grade students in the Beaverton School District, will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This one hour of testing, measures students learned reasoning abilities, through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies and figure matrices.
Families whose student scores in the 90th percentile or above on the CogAT screener, will be notified and invited to give permission for their students to take the remainder of the test. There will be post-screener testing and full CogAT testing happening in elementary schools up until winter break.
If your student is on vacation or ill during the 3rd grade CogAT screener, we will not be able to accommodate a testing session in advance. When you return, check in with the buildings tag facilitator (Dawn Trout) to see if there is an easy way to add your student to a future testing session.
Hiteon Elementary Cogat screener testing dates are:
November 4th 8am-9am for Kunicki and 10:55-11:55 for Weisz
November 5th 8am-9am for Killian and 10:55-11:55 for Makeups
For more information about testing, please contact your schools Tag Facilitator Dawn Trout dawn-trout@beaverton.k12.or.us

Medication Needs at School
It is URGENT that ALL medications either over the counter and/or prescription medications be checked into the office by a parent or guardian. This even includes such things as cough drops and chap stick.
Medications SHOULD NOT be carried by students in pockets, purses, book bags or backpacks. Students are NOT allowed to self administer at school.
Parents or guardians are required to bring all medications over the counter or prescription to the office in their original packaging (No ziplocks or loose items) and fill out an "Administration of Medication form".
This form is necessary if your child needs to take any type of medication (prescription or over the counter) during school hours, and must be completed by a parent or guardian.
Medication policies are strictly adhered to by school personnel. Please contact the school office at 503-356-2140 if you have questions.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
Dear Hiteon Families,
Ensuring all students make progress towards standards is a key outcome of BSD’s Strategic Plan. As part of this plan, BSD is implementing a districtwide K-12 comprehensive literacy and math universal screener that will be used as an assessment tool for all students, including those identified as needing special education, academic interventions and/or Talented and Gifted services. Star Assessments are designed to align with and support Oregon State Learning Standards in language arts and mathematics. This alignment ensures that the assessments provide relevant and meaningful data to educators.
Star Assessments are short, computer adaptive tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student. Students may take a Star test for early literacy, math, or reading.
Teachers will analyze the data they receive from Star Assessments to learn what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, to monitor student growth, and provide targeted instruction. This system of assessments will be used not only to inform data-based decisions, but to support an instructional framework of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
Students will take the Star Assessments three times during the 2024-2025 school year, during the Fall, Winter, and Spring.
At Fall Conferences, your child’s teacher will share a report of the Star assessment(s) taken in September. At Spring Conferences, a report that highlights your child’s learning growth will be shared.
Please contact your child’s teachers if you have any questions about the Star assessments.

New Volunteer Background Check System
If you haven’t done so already, please reapply to be a volunteer in the Beaverton School District. We’re implementing a new volunteer management system over the summer and need time to process and complete the criminal background checks for all applicants.
Start on the Volunteer webpage on the district website. The entire process — including the review of the Child Abuse Prevention & Reporting and Adult Sexual Misconduct training materials — should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
Thank you for prioritizing our students’ safety and for your willingness to volunteer in BSD.
