Dear Julian Curtiss Families
Julie DesChamps of Waste Free Greenwich has reported that Julian Curtiss School is the fourth elementary school to adopt the organics recycling program, which diverts banana peels, apple cores and other food scraps from the waste stream to cut waste, save natural resources, and promote environmental stewardship. The Eagles dramatically increased their diversion rate from 34% to 76% by separating their food waste from liquids, recycling and trash and donating any uneaten, unopened food to the share refrigerator.
A daily average of 27 lbs of food scraps were diverted from incineration to instead create energy and compost at Quantum Biopower, an anaerobic digester. Through the Zero Waste Schools program, the students are projected to eliminate almost 10,000 lbs of trash during the school year.
Some of the educational highlights in the cafeteria included instructional videos, a compost challenge competition between grade levels, the Ready, Set, Sort! video game and a worm bin encounter to see composting in action. The students will celebrate their success with a delivery of compost for the school's gardens, bringing the process full circle!
GO EAGLES!
We wish our families that celebrate a very Happy Easter and we wish everyone a wonderful three day weekend. We will see you on Monday.

Solar Eclipse on April 8th
Excitement is in the air! On April 8th a total solar eclipse will take place in North America between 2:25 PM and 4:00 PM with the actual total eclipse happening at around 3:30 PM. This is a unique and exciting event when the moon blocks the Sun perfectly, and only a dim outer ring of the sun appears to be visible. There won't be another U.S. eclipse spanning coast to coast until 2045.
Many suggest that there could be danger in looking directly at the sun without appropriate eyewear. Though it is expected to be minimal in the Greenwich area, below is a link for more information about the eclipse as well as a suggested link for safety glasses should you wish to purchase them for your child.
Great ideas to support writing at home!
