Updates from Mrs. Haak

As we head into the final weeks of the school year, I am amazed at how quickly the year has flown by! June is always an exciting month filled with special events, celebrations, field trips, and opportunities for students and families to come together as we celebrate a successful school year.

Please take a look at the calendar of events included in this newsletter. We look forward to seeing many of you at our end-of-year activities. As a reminder, the last day of school for students is June 18th.

Thank you for your partnership, support, and encouragement throughout the year. Our students have grown so much, and that success would not be possible without the strong connection between home and school. We are grateful for all you do.

While we will miss our 4th grade students as they move on to middle school, we are excited for the opportunities ahead of them and know they will do great things. At the same time, we look forward to welcoming our newest learners in UPK and Kindergarten this fall.

On behalf of the entire elementary school staff, I wish you and your family a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing everyone again in the fall!

Did you know that last month was Mental Health Awareness Month? This is a time to remind ourselves that our feelings and emotions are just as important as our physical health! Being healthy means taking care of our minds, too. Throughout this month, we will be focusing on ways to be kind to ourselves and others, managing our emotions, and practicing relaxation. Remember: It is okay to ask for help if you are feeling sad, worried, or overwhelmed. We are all here to support each other.

Update from Our 12:1:1 Class - Mrs. Winslow

We have had a great school year in Special Class! Back in the wintertime, we took a field trip to a local bowling alley. The kids had a blast! While having fun, students also got to work on turn-taking, being respectful and using good manners, and showing good sportsmanship. Students also took part in grade level field trips. Some trips included the Museum of Science and Technology and the Montezuma National Wildlife Center. We had an amazing day at the regional Special Olympics! Students took part in a young athlete experience, which included fun and engaging sports related activities. In the spring of this school year, Special Class took over running the Gotcha Store! Supported by Mrs. Hadcock, our Teaching Assistant, students have the opportunity to help set up, organize, and restock the store as classes come, shop, and depart. This is a great opportunity for positive peer interactions and practice with real life skills. Our students have been loving being able to support the Gotcha Store in this new and special way!

We also extend our sincere gratitude to our families for your ongoing support and collaboration. As we head into summer, we encourage everyone to take time to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends. Whether through reading, exploring new interests, traveling, or simply enjoying the beautiful weather, we hope our students find opportunities to continue learning and growing.

Congratulations to our 8th-grade students as they move on to high school. We are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to seeing all that you will achieve in the future.

Thank you for making the 2025-2026 school year such a positive and rewarding experience. We wish all of our families a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer. We look forward to welcoming our students back in September for another great year at NRWMS!

Field Day - June 16!

Field Day will be held Tuesday, June 16th!! Please make sure your child brings a water bottle and wears sunscreen if needed as we will be outside for the entire day! Your child will also receive a class t-shirt to wear on this day!

Updates from Nurse Barron

This school year might be coming to a close but we are already thinking about what students will need for the next school year starting in September! New York State requires all 5th and 7th grade students to have an up to date physical from their doctor on file at school. This means the exam was completed within the last 12 months. Students must have a current physical on file if they plan on playing a school sport in the fall.

Current 5th graders who are already 11 years old will need their Tdap vaccine (Tetanus) to start 6th grade in September. Students in 5th grade who will not be 11 by the start of school, will need to receive their Tdap vaccine within 2 weeks after their birthday. These can be given at an appointment with their doctor for their physical, a “nurse only” visit at your doctor’s office, or through the Wayne County Public Health Immunization Clinic held every other Wednesday of the month.

All current 6th graders will need the Meningococcal vaccine to start 7th grade in September.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Have a safe and happy summer!

Message from our Mental Health Team

As we approach the end of the school year, June is a time to celebrate growth, reflect on accomplishments, and help students finish strong academically, socially, and emotionally.

Families can support their students by:

  • Encouraging consistent attendance through the last day of school

  • Checking grades and missing assignments regularly

  • Helping students maintain routines, including healthy sleep habits

  • Celebrating effort and progress, not just final grades

Even during the final weeks of school, classroom learning and assessments remain important.

Mental Health Tip of the Month

It’s normal to feel tired, emotional, or distracted at the end of the school year. Try these quick reset ideas:

  • Take a short walk

  • Listen to calming music

  • Put your phone down for 10 minutes while at home

  • Get enough sleep (at least 8 hours!)

  • Talk to someone you trust

Remember: growth does not happen overnight. Think about one thing you improved this year, whether it was grades, friendships, attendance, confidence, and/or effort. Small progress still counts!

Have a wonderful summer!

Grade Level Updates

Grade 5: In math, we will be finishing up the year reviewing geometry concepts in order to create a miniature village of buildings. This will connect real life skills involved in making structures and math! In ELA, the students will be wrapping up the book Tuck Everlasting, throughout this unit students have been able to work on their opinion writing, visualize what they are reading through interactive activities and utilize a digital workbook to continue to practice our fifth grade skills. We are busy finishing up our science unit on Ecosystems with many great projects and field trips to tie in real life applications! We have been creating and maintaining ecosystems in our room which are home to bugs, plants, fish and snails! We have also planted bean and tomato seeds and completed experiments on them as well to explore how plants get their mass. Our social studies unit will finish strong by having a Colonial Day! We will finish up learning all about the different colonial regions before Genesee Country Village and Museum will be coming to lead two workshops for us (Tinsmithing and Little Red Schoolhouse) and we will celebrate the colonial arts and culture with a square dance!

Grade 6: 6th grade math is finishing out the year learning all about statistics! We are learning to collect, graph and analyze data and will be completing our own stats project. Social Studies will be wrapping up the Rome unit by learning about the Pax Romana and the Punic Wars. ELA classes are finishing Holes with the culminating project of their graphic novel based on Holes! Science classes are finishing up their unit on tectonic plates and layers of the Earth! 6th graders will be taking final exams and their final i-Ready diagnostics in June as well.

Grade 7: In Social Studies, we will be having our last unit test on Monday June 8. After that we will review for the final exam which will be on Friday June 12. Math completed a 3-day theme park project that tested their creativity, problem solving skills, and ability to calculate area, budgeting and percentage fees. The students did an AMAZING job on this project. Math final is June 11th. Students in Advanced Science are finishing up the New York State Investigation, “How’s the Weather Up There?” In this hands-on lab, students become weather forecasters as they learn how to read weather maps and predict upcoming weather conditions. Using what they have learned about air pressure, temperature, and humidity, students examine weather data to figure out what is happening in the atmosphere and what weather might be on the way. By tracking weather fronts and pressure systems, they are developing the same skills meteorologists use every day to create weather forecasts.

Grade 8:
ELA final will be happening in class the week of June 1st. iReady ELA is Monday, June 8. Science 8 final is Tuesday, June 9. iReady math is Wednesday, June 10. Math 8 final is Thursday, June 11. Social Studies final is Friday, June 12. The Spanish final is Monday, June 15. Algebra final is Wednesday, June 17. Biology final is Thursday, June 18.

Cougar Pride Call of the Week

Cougar Pride calls help recognize students for doing a good deed, brightening someone else’s day, helping a friend, mastering a goal, or overcoming an obstacle!

Check out the North Rose-Wolcott Central School District Facebook page to see which students are chosen each week! Mrs. Yarnes and Mr. Canori are grateful for this opportunity to acknowledge students each week who are demonstrating Cougar Values each day!

A Note From Our Nurse, Mrs. Randall

Hard to believe that it is almost the end of the school year and summer is almost here. With the warmer weather coming don’t forget to make sure you use sunscreen to prevent sunburns.

This is a good time to make those doctors appointments to get the physicals in before the start of the next school year. Students in 9th grade, 11th grade and any student that wants to do a sport requires an up to date physical. Also all new students require a physical.

We are also now required by the state to have a written doctor order for all medication and over the counter medications. (Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, benadryl, vaseline, cough drops, etc…) as well as Epi-Pens, Inhalers, ADD/ADHD meds. or any other medications that may be needed during the school day/year.

Without written doctors orders we are not allowed to dispense medications. Medication forms and physical forms will be sent out at the end of June.

Have a great summer!

We held our final meeting on Tuesday, June 2 to prepare for next year and to say good-bye to our seniors!

Yearbook

Yearbooks have arrived! If you ordered one earlier in the year, we will be distributing them to students this week. If you did not preorder one, there are a few available for purchase at the cost of $78.84 (exact cash or check made payable to NRW Yearbook). Contact Mrs. Judge if you have any questions.

Distance Learning Updates

Please consider joining us in the Distance Learning Lab for Physics or ASL in September! Please see your counselor for additional Asynchronous course opportunities.

Choir

Twelve students participated in NYSSMA Solofest at Wayne Central on Friday, 5/15. Nine students performed a Level 6 (highest) solo, and they all received “A” ratings with three earning an “A+”. We also had one duet entry, and they received a perfect score!

Thank you to everyone who attended our concert on 5/20. The rain prevented us from participating in the Four Town Bicentennial on 5/16, but we still have a few performances left this year! You can hear some of our students at Festival of the Arts on 6/4. We will be participating in the Darien Lake Music Festival on Friday 6/5 for the first time, and we are preparing music for the Strawberry Festival on 6/13.

Band

It is a busy time of year for the band students yet again!

Firstly the band had several participants in this year's solo festival at Wayne High School. Many received great scores. I am very proud of the growth and hard work displayed by the students who went.

Then we had our Spring Concert along with the HS Choir where we were able to celebrate and send off our seniors. Thank you to all who attended.

Additionally, I have had a crew of students join Marching Band who have been absolutely awesome! This is all on a volunteer basis so I am very grateful to those involved. Through their hard work, we have been able to perform at the Elementary School’s Memorial Day parade and Ceremony, as well as the Wolcott Memorial Day parade and ceremony. A special shout out to senior Grey Masten for being able to play taps at a moment's notice at the elementary school ceremony when there were some technical difficulties.

There will be a few more moments to hear the band students perform this year. Come join us on Thursday June 4th for the festival of the arts. This will showcase many of our students talents and love for music, and provide them a unique opportunity for them to perform other music they are passionate about.

The following day, Friday June 5th, we will be performing at the Darien Lake Six Flags competition. Wish us luck!

Lastly, the marching band will be performing for the strawberry festival and parade on Saturday June 13th. We will perform earlier on in the day at the Gazebo, as well as will be marching in the parade later on.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our talented students this year!

NRWHS Musical Club

The musical club attended the Elenbes awards ceremony on Tuesday May 26th and we are proud to announce that Kaylynn Coene received “Best Featured Performer” award. This is an award that is chosen by the judges, and is not nominated by the directors, so this is a really great honor.

We are so proud of you Kaylynn!

Additionally, Madi Watts and Abi Bates were chosen by the directors for their unwavering dedication and hard work they showed the program this past year. We are so unbelievably proud and grateful for their efforts and talents.

A final thank you to all who helped make this year's show possible as well as to anyone who came to see our show to support! We are very excited for next year's show and are certain you will be too! Until next time!

Art Department

Thirty-two art students volunteered to create portraits for The Memory Project. NRW has been participating in this project for more than twenty years! Students gain skills by working on the portraits, and then the subjects will receive their portraits this summer through a hand delivery that is recorded. The subjects this year are from India.

All art students are preparing for the Festival of the Arts on June 4th and then they are finishing up their digital portfolios and reflecting on their accomplishments for the year.

Art Club

Art Club has two fundraisers to close out the end of this year. The first is the annual Silent Auction held during the Festival of the Arts. Artwork created by former students will be in the display case and up for sale. The bidding will be done in dollar increments on papers in the main foyer during the festival and will conclude after the Academic Awards. The second fundraiser is to help the Class of 2026 to design their caps for graduation. On June 9-11th seniors can stay after in the H04 art room to get help designing and executing their cap designs. Art Club is charging a $5 fee per cap, but students are welcome to stay all three days if they need to.

All of the proceeds from the fundraisers will go to support the d.dargan teska Art Award which is given to one to two seniors who have been active in art club and show a deep appreciation for the arts.

Caring Cougars

The Caring Cougars had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Harriet Tubman homestead, the Seward House, and the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn. We met a fantastic speaker who helped us learn about the amazing conductors of the Underground Railroad. We had an incredible trip and recommend that everyone go!

Library Media Center

We’re still looking for books! All books should be returned before school ends so we can take inventory and better assess the needs of our library for next year. Please keep looking for overdue and lost books!

Sometimes, people are afraid to return overdue books or books that have been damaged - don’t be! We understand that life happens sometimes. We don’t judge - we just want the books back! This helps us decide if we need to make repairs or replace and keep our library collection healthy. Thank you for supporting our library.

Looking for something to read this summer? All students have access to Sora through Classlink, and the Sora app can also be added to any phone or tablet. Sora is an online reading platform that offers e-books and audiobooks that can be checked out just like physical books and read on phones, tablets, and computers. To sign on, students just need their school email addresses. In addition to the titles NRW invests in, Sora is also offering many titles to students with no wait time - and it’s all free!
