We Love Our Moms!
What we did this week:
This week in Literacy we read "Building With Dad" for informational fiction. Students learned about getting information from fictional work. Students really loved learning about construction and building. We read several other books about building that included: "The construction Crew", "Pete the Cat & the Tip-Top Tree House" and "If I Built a House". Students had a lot of fun comparing and contrasting equipment used on different job sights as well as comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences in the books. In Writing, students wrote about what they would like to build using pronouns where appropriate. Students applied their writing conventions: beginning uppercase letters, spacing and punctuation. During Literacy Rotations students practiced nouns by playing a game called "Who Has This Noun" where students used cards wo see who is holding the noun that they are looking for. During Math, we continued working on measuring. Students did tons of measuring during Math rotations and read many math books. Students combined Math and Science while working on Mother's Day Jam this week! We measured and sequenced (our recipe) for Math and we learned about how strawberries break down when frozen and then cooked! Math and Science have never been so yummy!
First: We Picked Our Strawberries!
Next: We mashed them & added lemon & sugar!
Then: We cooked them for 10 minutes!
Last: We Cooked them & put the jam in jars for our mothers!
Happy Mother's Day!!!
What's happening next week:
Next week, in Literacy students will read animal fantasy book, "Old McDonald had a Woodshop". this book extends our unit on "Putting It Together" with a lesson on building with different tools. Students will learn about how to use a saw, hammer, file, drill, screwdriver and chisel. In Writing, students will begin using prepositional phrases while writing about what they would like to build with tools. This should be a lot of fun with students sharing some interesting ideas. In Math, we will continue working on measuring using standard measuring tools: rulers, tape measures & yard sticks. In Science, we will continue our learning about energy conservation and how we can help our earth by using natural resources. As the end of the year is nearing, we will be assessing and refreshing differentially particularly in Math & Social Studies.
