Dear 5th Grader,

I hope you are enjoying your summer. I'm writing to let you know that I will be coordinating the Safety Patrol program for the 2026-2027 school year.

The goal of this program is for our fifth graders to take on the responsibility of providing positive examples and guidance to their fellow students.

If you would like to participate in our Washington School Safety Patrol program, please write a one paragraph essay explaining your reasons for wanting to work as a Safety Patrol Member. You can share the paragraph directly with me (emartin@westfieldnjk12.org), drop it off in the Main Office, or bring the essay to my classroom before/after school in Room 3. The deadline to submit an essay is Wednesday, September 9th.

On Thursday, September 10th, I will have you rank possible posts and place you in an assignment for either the first, second, or third trimester of the year. Some positions may be a full year. Some of the posts include: First Grade Helper, Recess Helper, Library Helper, Fifth Grade Door Holder and a helper for Art.

When you are selected, I will provide you with a permission slip to bring home for your parents to sign and return. First trimester posts should begin sometime during the week of September 14th.

Please know that this is an extracurricular activity as well as a privilege. If your teacher feels that this job is getting in the way of school work, I will find an alternate student to take your place for your position.
