Mr. Macken's Message

Centerville Families,

Thank you to everyone who attended conferences last night and to those who are signed up to meet next week. It is always so great to see our families in the building investing in their child’s future.

Conferences are a valuable opportunity to hear more about your child’s strengths, growth, and effort, and to talk about how we can work as a team to support their continued progress. As a former Centerville parent and now your principal, I truly believe what makes Centerville so special is that strong sense of community.

Teachers know and care deeply about each child. Parents want what is best for their children. Together, we come alongside our students to help them grow as learners and as people.

As we lean into the final four months of school, I encourage you to continue partnering with your child’s teacher in helping your child become a stronger reader. Reading is foundational to success, and in elementary school, families can make a tremendous difference.

The good news is we do not have to be experts. A couple of simple routines can have a big impact. Below you will find two easy, high-impact strategies that can help make reading easier and more meaningful for your child. One is specifically for kindergarten students, where strong letter identification is critically important. The other applies to all grade levels and focuses on building comprehension and fluency.

The best part is that it does not have to be a heavy lift. Ten to fifteen minutes a night can make a significant difference over time.

Thank you again for your participation in conferences and for working together to help your child grow.

Have a fabulous weekend,

Go Cougars!

Mike Macken

Centennial Preschool registration is underway

The Centennial School District offers high-quality part-day and full-day preschool experiences designed to prepare students, ages 3-5, and their families for success in kindergarten. Our 4-Star Parent Aware rated program teaches both academic and social skills using a “learning-through-play” philosophy. Full-day classrooms are located at each of the elementary schools in the Centennial School District; part-day classrooms, including our Outdoor Explorers class, are at the Early Childhood Center. Registrations received between February 2 – February 22 will be included in the placement lottery. Registration will remain open after the lottery for remaining seats. Preschool Program and Registration Information can be found here.

It’s not too late to register for early childhood screening!

Early childhood screening is a requirement for students going to kindergarten in September 2026.

Early Childhood Screening is a free, simple check of a young child's health and development. The program connects parents and children to early childhood programs and community resources.

Screening should be done between the ages of 3 and 5 years old and is required for public school attendance. It does not determine kindergarten readiness. We still have the following monthly screening dates available:

  • March 5
  • April 10
  • May 7

Schedule an appointment here . If you have any questions or need assistance, send an email to ecscreening@isd12.org or call the Early Childhood office at 763-792-6120.

School Board hosts listening session on February 9

In ongoing efforts to gather feedback from stakeholders, the School Board is hosting a Listening Sessions for the public on February 9, 5:30 p.m.-6:15 p.m. in the District Board Room. Listening Sessions are held throughout the school year. The sessions provide the opportunity for community members, staff, parents, and students to meet informally with board representatives and the superintendent to discuss topics in the schools. Listening Sessions increase communication and engagement work that reflects the district’s commitment to excellence. Additional sessions to seek input/perspective on topics established by the Board would be scheduled as a special or additional Board Listening Session. More information can be found on the Centennial website.
