Field Trip Field Trip

Our field trip to the zoo is Thursday 10/3. Buses will arrive at 9:00am and we should return to school around 1:00pm. Please make sure students bring a water bottle. Also they should wear comfortable clothes and shoes for outdoors.

We had a ton of parents want to chaperone! Thank you all for your support! We are only allowed 3 parent chaperones per class with the $8 admission rate and to attend the zoo classroom.

I've drawn 3 parent names and they are: Jen Bankert, Hailey Thoman, and Carlos Ibarra. Please send in your $8 with the chaperone form signed and returned. We will be in a classroom in one big group and then walking around the zoo. We will then eat lunch and head back to the bus!

If your name was not selected to be a parent chaperone, you can still come with us! However, you will need to pay the zoo admission price and drive separately since we will not have space on the bus. The classroom is also limited to 3 parent chaperones, but you are still able to tour the zoo and eat lunch with us.

This week we will be learning:

Reading: We will be continuing our unit on animal classifications. We will learn about informational text features and focus on amphibians.

Writing: We will continue working on our Diary of a Desert Animal writing project. We will be finishing our last paragraph on the adaptations of the desert animal and then publish the writing with all 3 diary entries. This project has been broken up into single paragraphs that will come together, but it's taken a lot of guided support with paragraph writing. Finished and graded projects will be returned after fall break.

Math: We will continue to work on passing a times table in one minute. Please have your child practice the times table they are working on passing! It is so important to take a few minutes each day to work on this! These times tables are found in student STAR binders.

We have started a new unit on understanding place value through metric measurement. This week students will estimate and measure weight and liquid volume by using grams, kilograms, liters, and milliliters. Familiar concepts, such as composing and decomposing place value units, are applied to the relationship between the smaller unit (gram or milliliter) and the unit that represents 1,000 (kilogram or liter).

This week student's should have a new weekly planner to track their assignments and their last reading assignment to complete with the Mouse and the Motorcycle Book in their homework folder. There will be no math homework this week in efforts to get reading homework turned in by Wednesday 10/2.

Please check your student's STAR binder every day to help track assignments and keep your student organized using the planner provided at the front of the binder.

3000 Page Goal 3000 Page Goal

Students are highly encouraged to participate in the 3,000 page reading goal this year! Reading is SO important and I want to encourage students to read books of their choice (each book should be 80-100 pages in length at minimum).

Students should track finished books on their reading logs to track the number of pages read.

There is a summary sheet to complete when books are finished. The summary sheet can be accessed in the classroom when needed.

Math Minute Math Minute

We are continuing to work on the math minute challenge. This challenge encourages kids to study the multiplication facts one table at a time. The Times Tables are located in your child's STAR Binder. They may use these to study, homemade flash cards, or any other creative way that works best.

The way it works,

  1. Your child will receive a list of 20 facts based on the table; x2, x3, x4, through x 12.
  2. If within one minute, your child gets 100% she/he will move onto the next table.
  3. If your child doesn't get 100%, he/she will retake the test until earning 100%.
  4. When a child passes, I will return the test to take home, and you'll know that they are onto the next table.

I am hoping for a lot of success in learning the math facts. Memorized is within three seconds.

A Note from OMA A Note from OMA

Our OMA teacher will be sending home recorders for students to practice at home on 10/1. They need to be kept in their backpacks at all times when not practicing so they can be here and used twice a week in class. They should be practicing "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Happy Listening :)
