FY2026 Budget

At their April 10 meeting, the School Committee continued to consider and discuss options to reduce the projected FY26 budget deficit.

On April 10, the Committee voted to:

  • Reduce the allocation to the Town Building Department for repairs and maintenance (savings of $600,000)

  • Reduce 3.2 FTE positions in the Office of Student Services, through attrition and open positions (savings of $343,180)

  • Reduce positions at Brookline High School, including the MCAS Coordinator, one Associate Dean, and two paraprofessionals (savings of $266,000)

  • Accept recently-identified adjusted savings due to staff retirements ($86,039) and custodial services ($32,228)

  • Adjust a prior vote related to an IT position (additional savings of $23,550)

  • Reject a proposal to reduce and reconfigure the K-8 Curriculum Coordinator positions

The projected deficit is now just over $1.7 million (reduced from $8 million).

The Town School Partnership Committee is meeting this afternoon to discuss the PSB budget deficit and proposed resolutions. The school department budget will be presented to the Select Board at their meeting on Tuesday, April 15.

A quorum of the School Committee is expected to join this week’s School Finance Subcommittee meeting (Thursday, April 16 at 5:30pm, remote via Zoom) to hear an update from the Town School Partnership Committee meeting and take any other additional FY26 budget actions, as necessary.

Personal Electronic Device Policy

The School Committee unanimously approved a Personal Electronic Device Policy on April 10. The policy, which employs an “off and away” approach for K-8 students and a “limited use” approach for high school students, had a First Reading before the School Committee on January 23. The Superintendent will be working with school leaders to incorporate the policy into student handbooks for the 2025-2026 school year. The School Committee will continue to monitor any guidance that may be issued by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office pursuant to the act promoting safe technology use and distraction-free education for youth for any possible impact on this policy.
