Burnside Elementary
Note from the Principal
Dear Burnside Families,
As we approach the end of another school year, I continue to be impressed by our Burnside students as they grow and they discover their unique paths and interests. Thank you for entrusting them to our care.
May is the month when we honor our dedicated teachers, staff, school lunch heroes, and nurses. Their unwavering commitment deserves daily recognition. Please consider sending them a note of appreciation—it would mean so much to them!
On a final note, after many years in the district, I am moving on to new adventures, and I want to thank you for the incredible gift of your students. I will carry with me the lessons and values learned from this district. I'm proud of what we've achieved together.
I wish each of you continued success, happiness, and fulfillment. No matter where life takes us, the bonds we’ve built will endure. I wish you all the very best.

STEAM Opportunity
See below for an awesome opportunity for 3rd and 4th grade students for our summer STEAM camps. Sign up for the camp for the grade your son/daughter will be going into next fall.
We're already at 19 for the 6-8 camp before summer even starts, which is great! Our 4th and 5th grade camp is starting to fill up as well. When Burnside fourth graders attend the tour of Twin Bluff, Mr. Richmond will be in my classroom to answer any questions and to help you register. As with the 6-8 camp, if the numbers require I'll hire an additional staff.
Lunch will be provided for free for all campers! Mr. Richmond is hoping to order t-shirts mid-May. T-shirts run on the small side so you may wish to order the next size larger.
Mr. Richmond is working on an afternoon of fishing at Pottery Pond on the last day of camp. More information on this closer to summer :)
Community Education is the contact for any questions on registrations, and there is a QR code on the photo for easy registration

Celebrate our Amazing School Staff!!
- May 1 is School Lunch Hero Day! We are so grateful for the breakfasts & lunches that our kitchen staff provide on a daily basis. Justa Stabe and her amazing staff are kind, efficient, and helpful -- and their lunches are really good, too!
- May 6 is National Teacher Appreciation Day to honor our teachers and recognize the lasting contributions they make to our lives.
- May 8 is National School Nurse Day! Nurses Casey and Lauren take care of the medical needs of upwards of 60 students each day! This day recognizes the crucial role school nurses play in supporting health and well-being.
Bus Stop & Walk Wednesdays, May 6 & May 13
The Bus Stop and Walk (BSW) program ensures that every student is provided the opportunity to be active before school. During this event, students will be dropped off in front of the school where they will be met with a staff member, among other volunteers, who will lead them around the school on a designated path, allowing them to walk with the goal of improving physical and mental health and increasing academic performance.
Field Days
- 2nd Grade: May 26
- 4th Grade: May 27
- 3rd Grade: May 28
Activities will kick off at 8:20 AM, featuring various stations and wrap up around 10:20 AM with tug of war. Field days will happen rain or shine. If weather is questionable, the events will take place in the gym.
End of Year Picnic - Friday, May 29
We would love to see you on the front lawn at Burnside for our end of year picnic!
Grade 2: 10:50 - 11:35
Grade 3: 11:35 -12:20
Grade 4: 12:20 - 1:05
School lunch is a hot chicken sandwich, bag of chips, apple slices, carrots, and milk. Visitors can purchase a lunch for $5 (exact cash or check to ISD256). If you would like to bring your child lunch, you may do so, but give yourself extra time if you order at a fast food place in town!
Parking: Please follow all posted parking signs. Additional parking is available in the south lot (next to the drop off/pick up lot).
If you plan on taking your child home after the picnic, please sign them out with their teacher.
In the case of inclement weather, the event will be canceled and not rescheduled.
Self Portrait Pickets
The picket fence your child made of themselves in October will be ready to take home at our end of the year picnic on May 29th. After you have lunch with your kiddo, you can walk over to the fence by the drop off/pick up area to find your child's self portrait and take it home. They are sorted by class and I will be out there to help. The name should be on the front of it. The piece of wood should slide right out of the fence from the top. They are weather resistant so they can be kept outside in your garden or kept inside as a work of art.
Thank you for supporting your child's artistic envisions!

Help Our Students Shine - Become a Tutor!
Every child deserves the opportunity to be a successful learner. That’s why Burnside Elementary is looking for AmeriCorps tutors to help students build their skills and confidence.
Tutors serve during school hours and spend their days providing students with extra practice
and skill building. With the support of an on-site coach, you’ll be trained to deliver activities
proven to help students improve in reading or math.
No experience? No problem. Our tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are a recent
grad, career changer, stay-at-home parent, or retiree, you can make a great tutor!
Part-time and full-time positions for the 2025-26 school year are available beginning in August,
October, and January. Tutors receive a paycheck every two weeks plus an education award to
pay for qualifying college tuition or student loans. Tutors aged 55 or older may gift the education
award to their child, grandchild, stepchild, step-grandchild, or foster child.

Parent Input Into Class Placement
Each year, we take steps to thoughtfully place elementary students into classrooms for the upcoming school year. Parent input is one of the many important components to effective class placement. The parent input process is not intended to offer the opportunity to request a specific teacher, rather an opportunity to express perspective on unique needs of individual children. Consideration will focus on the student need identified and not specific teacher requests.
Please return the below form to Burnside by June 5, 2025 if you have information you would like considered as we develop the class lists.
