There are two different majors offered by the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. The BMUS degree and the AB Music degree. Each is designed for students seeking different professional paths after graduation.
The BMUS degree has 5 different Areas of Emphasis. Each Area of Emphasis has a specific curriculum, recital (performance) requirement and applied instruction requirement.
Bachelor of Music (BMUS)
Areas of Emphasis:
- Music Performance - Vocal or Instrumental
The program of study leading to the degree Bachelor of Music in Music with an Area of Emphasis in Music Performance is designed to develop a strong foundation in music history, music theory, and performance, and as preparation for continued study at the graduate level. The degree provides for maximum development of individual musicianship and the various competencies required by the contemporary performer. The student has numerous opportunities to perform—including required third- and fourth-year solo recitals.
- Music Education - Choral or Instrumental
The program of study leading to the degree Bachelor of Music in Music with an Area of Emphasis in Music Education is designed to prepare the student for a career in teaching. It provides a broad base of general studies, applied music, music theory, and music history and literature. Professional course work and an internship are offered in the third and fourth year of study. Students completing the program are recommended for certification to teach PK-12 music in the public school systems of Georgia. Students may elect to specialize in choral, instrumental, or elementary/general music education.
The program of study leading to the degree Bachelor of Music in Music with an Area of Emphasis in Music Therapy includes a comprehensive study of the field of music with a strong emphasis in psychology and the social sciences. It is structured to provide a foundation in the scientific application of music in rehabilitative environments, and it includes a large field experience component as well as an internship. Students who complete the degree are eligible to become Board Certified Music Therapists after passing the Board Certification Examination.
The Bachelor of Music in Music with an Area of Emphasis in Music Composition provides three years of applied study on a major instrument (years one through three), as well as three years of intensive study in composition (years two through four). Students will be required to participate in seminars which focus on analysis and evaluation of student compositions. The program includes a strong foundation in theory and music literature along with applied study on a secondary instrument. Performance of contemporary music is emphasized. The four years of study culminates with a composition recital that presents a multi-movement or large-form composition for an ensemble of three or more instruments. Students are also required to present recitals in their applied area (vocal or instrumental).
The program of study leading to the degree Bachelor of Music in Music with an Area of Emphasis in Music Theory is structured to give a strong foundation in the academic study of music theory with concentrations in music history, performance, and an introduction to composition. The course of study in Music Theory includes the areas of form and analysis, counterpoint, and compositional techniques, and culminates in a research project which demonstrates the student's knowledge and abilities in the field.
Bachelor of Arts in Music (AB)
(AB Music )The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Music is designed to allow students to study music without the focus of a particular professional major (e.g., Performance, Theory, Music Education). The program is structured to provide a strong emphasis in applied music, theory, and music literature with a broad block of individually determined music credit hours. Due to this flexibility in the degree plan, an A.B. in Music is an excellent candidate for students wanting to pursue a double major or dual degree from UGA.

CURO Research Scholarships
Each year the CURO Research Award provides 500 scholarships of $1,000 each to outstanding undergraduate students across campus to actively participate in faculty-mentored research in any discipline.
Because of the scholarship nature of the award, students must be registered for a course (MUSI 4960/70/80/90R) during the semester in which they receive the award. Receiving a CURO Research Award qualifies for Experiential Learning credit if you present at the spring CURO Symposium.
Deadlines
- FALL – due by July 15
- SPRING – due by November 1
- SUMMER – due by April 15
Important details
- CURO Research Awards are one-semester scholarships (fall, spring, or summer).
- You must be registered for a course in the semester in which you receive the award.
- You may register for CURO course credit for your research, but it is not required.
- You may conduct research with faculty members outside of your department, college, or school, if it is beneficial for your program of study.
- You can receive the award more than once.
- All award recipients are expected to present their research at the spring CURO Symposium.

- Are you planning to graduate this spring, or summer? You should apply to graduate NOW!
- Why? Because putting in an application to graduate allows the graduation certification officers to look at your record and warn you of any impending issues!
- But what if I change my mind? That is okay, you can just email the Registrar and cancel your graduation application at reghelp@uga.edu.
- Shouldn't I wait until I’ve registered for my final semester to apply? NOPE! The longer you wait, the less time the graduation certification officers have to review your documents and the less time you have to make a correction.
- What about spring and summer graduation? There is no longer a separate summer commencement event. The spring and summer commencement are merged, so summer candidates “walk” in May. If you are finishing your final credits in summer, your graduation application MUST be for summer and not spring.
- READ the INSTRUCTIONS for HOW to APPLY: https://reg.uga.edu/student-records/graduation/apply-to-graduate/
- What if I have more than one program of study? You will create a separate graduation application for each of your majors and certificates. Minors do not require a graduation application.
- Having problems with the application? You should email the Office of the Registrar at reghelp@uga.edu. *Include your full name and student id#.*
