6th Grade - River Valley Civilizations

Social studies students have explored River Valley Civilizations, focusing on Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. Students learned about the Sumerians, Babylonians, Akkadians, and Assyrians, and completed activities to further learning on cuneiform, the ancient writing system developed by the Sumerians. During the activity, students decoded ancient cuneiform and invented their own picture system of writing. Additionally, students analyzed the Code of Hammurabi, the ancient legal code created by King Hammurabi of Babylonian around 1750 BCE, and read an excerpt from The Epic of Gilgamesh, telling of a great flood that plagued Mesopotamia. Social studies students have examined the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms of ancient Egypt, taking a virtual tour inside the Pyramids of Giza and researching how the Ancient Egyptians used science and mathematics to construct the Great Pyramids!

7th Grade -The Road to Independence

In 7th grade Social Studies, students are exploring the causes, course, and consequences of the American Revolution. They are learning how colonial grievances over taxes, representation, and British laws led to the Declaration of Independence. Students examine how Patriots, Loyalists, African Americans, Native Americans, and women made difficult choices during the war. Through key individuals, major battles, and geography—especially New York City—students analyze how the war was won. Along the way, they build academic vocabulary, evaluate multiple perspectives, research from diverse sources, and connect Revolutionary themes to modern democracy and current events.

8th Grade - The Gilded Age

In social studies, we are continuing Unit 2 studying the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and how lives changed for many Americans in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This unit explores themes of expanded wealth inequality, urbanization, workers rights, immigration, and racial terrorism. Their assessment will ask them to consider all these themes together and assess whether most Americans lives improved or were harmed during the Gilded Age.
