Cup o' Coffee #11...

What a start to the year! Shoutout to our Facilities and Custodial Teams for all their effort. They had to clear their own driveways and carefully creep to schools just to begin their work through the nights. Thank you for all you do!

Are your kids growing toward independence?

We have noticed an increase with students struggling to break things down into smaller, manageable first steps or maintain their effort to see a task through. This struggle to independently execute tasks impacts their learning as they become dependent on supports beyond the norm. This trend is not all our kids but large enough to need formal support and parent partnership. To that end, we will be communicating out information and fun ways to develop executive function skills, abilities to execute tasks, that promote independent, critical thinkers.

Checkout the Principal Video message for a quick, simple activity you can do at home and take a couple minutes to read this resource for more info:

What is a "C" Day??

This year, if school is canceled due to a weather event, like a snow day, then we could return to a "C" day. This depends on how many days school is canceled.

If school is canceled for a single day, then we would return to a "C" Day where students attend all of their classes (1-8 hour classes) in one day for about 44 minutes.

If school is canceled for two days, we would return to either an "A" or "B" day.

Whenever there is a school day cancellation, the Front office will send out a Parentsquare communication to staff students, and families about what type of day we will return to.

Attendance Matters

As we continue to prioritize student success, we want to remind you of Board of Education Policy 2310 - Student Absences and Excuses. In alignment with this policy, we will be resuming the practice of sending attendance notifications to parents/guardians when a student misses more than five unexcused days per semester. This practice was temporarily suspended during the pandemic.

Why Attendance Matters:

  • Student Well-being: Regular school attendance contributes to a student's overall well-being by fostering positive routines and social connections.

  • Academic Success: Research consistently shows a strong correlation between attendance and academic achievement. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to read proficiently, excel in middle school, and ultimately graduate.

We encourage you to work with us to ensure your child attends school regularly. By doing so, you are helping them build a strong foundation for future success. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's attendance, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher or the school office. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child's education!

Rockwood School District Community Read – “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt

The Rockwood School District and the Rockwood Library and Media program invite our parents and guardians, community members and high school students to participate in a “Community Read” this winter of “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” by Jonathan Haidt.

Throughout January and February, school librarians will host book discussions for their school or quadrant communities (check with your school librarian for specific information), culminating in a districtwide discussion on Thursday, Feb. 13, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Marquette High theater, led by guest speaker Julie Smith, Webster University communications instructor.

Rockwood educators care deeply about the mental health of all our students, and we feel this book will allow for meaningful conversations among parents, staff, community members and high school students. Our goal for these discussions is not to reach consensus or drive building or district policies, but to reflect, learn from each other and grow.

News from our Nurse:

We are seeing an increase in cases of pneumonia in our school, a national trend that is also impacting Rockwood. Please watch for symptoms that include fever, headache and a slowly worsening cough. If you notice these symptoms in your household, please contact your doctor. As always, we encourage frequent hand washing, covering coughs and staying home when feeling unwell to help protect the health of other students and staff. Thank you!

ParentSquare: Rockwood uses ParentSquare for district and school communication, primarily with email, text and app notifications. ParentSquare automatically generates an account for each parent, using their preferred email address and phone number. We encourage parents to access their accounts so they can download the mobile app and update their preferences on when and how they are notified. By default, if parents don’t access their account, they will receive a daily digest of messages from the school and district via email each evening. Click here for more information about ParentSquare.
