D65 Sustainability Community Meeting: Feb 17 Recap
A big thank you to our guest speaker and local artist Holly Greenberg, sharing more about her project Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene and opportunities we can all get involved.
Outdoor Dumpster Monitoring results in Annual Cost Savings
Aligned with our D65 Sustainability Plan, Sustainable Operations Waste & Circularity Goal #5: D65 is striving to reduce our waste to landfill and improve school recycling. In the Spring 2025 and Fall 2026, in partnership with our B&G team, we completed outdoor dumpster monitoring at our schools.
Why outdoor dumpster monitoring?
- Measure how full our current outdoor landfill and recycling containers are during a regular school day / week.
- Help us identify if we need bigger or smaller containers or adjustments in how often the containers are picked up.
- D65 wants to increase recycling at our schools and reduce waste to landfill.
We are pleased to share that starting in February, we are implementing service changes at 3 of our D65 schools (Dewey, King Arts and Park) resulting in an annual cost savings of $2,688.
Moving forward, we will continue to periodically complete outdoor dumpster monitoring at our schools as we strive to reduce waste to landfill and rightsize our waste services.
2026 End of School Clean Out: Coming Soon
In 2025, our D65 schools mobilized to gather leftover school supplies that would typically go to the landfill. We encouraged sharing and reuse within our schools and D65 Families and recovered $2150 of school supplies to offset purchasing new supplies! Remaining items were donated to our D65 Family Wellness Program, Art Makers Outpost, and SCARCE.
We're excited to host an End of School Clean Out again in 2026, with our process and timeline below. Stay tuned for more details on how to sign-up at your school next month. Learn more about our End of School Clean Out.

Ink Cartridge Recycling: Rolled out in All D65 Buildings in Feb
Technology Services and Sustainability are partnering with Genesis, our district’s Canon and HP printer service provider, to recycle used HP and Canon ink and toner cartridges. Each school will have a designated central drop-off location where staff can place empty cartridges, which will be collected and recycled quarterly (March, June, September, and December).
We have delivered and set-up reusable ink cartridge recycling boxes in all our D65 buildings. We're excited to roll this out district-wide and thanks to all in advance for supporting this district sustainability effort.

Event Information
The Evanston Public Library is pleased to announce that the 5th Annual Blueberry Awards, recognizing excellence in children’s literature about nature and climate stewardship, will be announced live on Friday, March 20, 2026 at an awards ceremony and party celebrating the authors, their work, and our earth.

At this event, you can also learn about the Blueberry Votes and Preschool Blueberry Votes program, in which Illinois kids, including Evanston children, selected 2025 Blueberry award winners!
At the event, staff from the Evanston Ecology Center and the Evanston Public Library will host climate, literature and nature dignitaries plus a brief keynote from Taylor Keahey from the American Library Association's 2026 Sibert Award Committee! Also in attendance will be lots of happy kids and parents.

Support ESCCA
ESCCA, the Evanston School Children’s Clothing Association, is hard at work fulfilling its historic mission - to make sure no Evanston child misses school for lack of warm clothing or shoes. ESCCA opened its doors to District 65 children just before the start of the school year so they could visit our store and choose warm clothing, coats, shoes, boots, socks, undergarments, and more. ESCCA has received over 150 referrals so far this school year.
There are many ways to get involved with ESCCA:
Consider purchasing something from our Amazon Wishlist which we continue to update with the items we need most. Click HERE!
Contribute financially to ESCCA to help us purchase clothing for the shop. Click HERE!

Volunteer Opportunity: Harbert Park Nature Play Area
At Harbert Payne Park, a native plant steward has set aside a wooded area in the park as a potential spot for a nature play area. The site could also include a grassy area of the park near the forested area.
