Coupeville School District
Coupeville Strong!
Dear Coupeville School District Families,
I hope everyone had a restful and rejuvenating time off over spring break. As we enter the final stretch of the school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on our incredible community and the strength we continue to demonstrate together.
First, I want to express my gratitude for your support of our schools. Coupeville's commitment to education is truly remarkable. From attending school events to volunteering in classrooms to participating in our community events, you have shown time and again that our students' success is a shared priority. This partnership between school and community is what makes Coupeville special.
Our students continue to impress us with their resilience, creativity, and dedication. Recently, our robotics team placed in the state competition and are off to Houston, our students in Skills USA are also placing in state and off to nationals, and our sports teams continue to compete at a high level. These achievements represent just a small sample of the amazing work happening throughout our district.
As we begin state testing season, I encourage students to approach these assessments with confidence. Remember, these tests are simply one tool to help us understand your academic growth. Get plenty of rest, eat well, and know that your teachers have prepared you thoroughly. Parents, your positive encouragement during this time makes a tremendous difference.
Looking ahead, we have many exciting events planned for the remainder of the school year. Field trips, year-end celebrations, and of course, graduation for our seniors are all on the horizon. Each of these moments represents an opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate our students.
Coupeville is strong. Our teachers, staff, students, and families form an exceptional educational community built on mutual respect, high expectations, and genuine care for one another. Together, we will finish this school year strong, continuing to provide the excellent education that has long been a hallmark of our district.
Community Recognition I'm thrilled to share that Coupeville School District was recently highlighted across several local news channels for our Connected Food Program. This recognition showcases the innovative ways our district supports student well-being and community connections. Please take time to watch the amazing feature on Seattle Refined. This recognition reflects the collaborative spirit that makes our district special.
Thank you for your continued partnership in this important work.
With appreciation,
Shannon Leatherwood

Where Everyone Belongs is Coming to Coupeville
Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) Program Coming to Coupeville
We are excited to announce that Coupeville Middle School will be implementing the Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) program for the upcoming school year! WEB is a middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes incoming 6th graders and makes them feel comfortable throughout their first year of middle school.
Supporting Successful Transitions
The transition from elementary to middle school is a significant milestone in a student's educational journey. Research from the Boomerang Project, which developed the WEB program, shows that students who participate in structured transition programs like WEB demonstrate:
- 27% reduction in discipline issues
- 20% increase in attendance rates
- Significant improvements in academic performance, with GPA increases averaging 0.5 points
- 42% increase in student connectedness to school
- 30% decrease in reported feelings of anxiety about middle school
These impressive statistics reflect why over 4,000 schools nationwide have adopted this research-based approach to supporting student transitions.
Leadership Opportunities for Current 7th Graders
A unique aspect of the WEB program is that it's built on a "students helping students" model. Current 7th graders who will be entering 8th grade next year will have the opportunity to become WEB Leaders. These student mentors will be trained to:
- Lead orientation activities for incoming 6th graders
- Conduct regular check-ins with their mentees throughout the school year
- Organize academic support sessions and social activities
- Develop valuable leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
WEB Leaders will participate in comprehensive training this spring and summer to prepare them for their mentoring roles. This leadership experience not only benefits the incoming students but also helps our older students develop important life skills while building a stronger school community.
Special Thanks to Our Community Partners
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Coupeville Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools for providing the funds needed to support this important program. Their generous contribution demonstrates our community's commitment to innovative educational practices that support student well-being and success. This investment in our students' transition experience will have lasting positive effects throughout their middle school years.
We believe the WEB program aligns perfectly with our district's commitment to creating inclusive, supportive learning environments where all students can thrive. By fostering these connections between different grade levels, we strengthen our entire school community.
Current 7th-grade families will receive information soon about the WEB Leader application process. For our 5th-grade families, look for more details about WEB orientation activities coming this summer!
