Conversation Starters

As you talk to your child about their day, consider asking him or her to explain more about what they learned, why it is important for them to know, and how they know they have mastered it. These questions are part of our Visible Learning work.

Listening with Understanding and Empathy

What is it? – Paraphrasing, attending, seeking other’s feelings

Sounds like – “So you’re suggesting….” “Your idea is…..” “You’re upset because…..” You’re excited about…….”

Looks like – Facing one another. Eye contact. Nodding.

Feels like – This person cares enough to really listen to me. Comforting, Trusting, Vulnerable

Good Listening Skills

  • Head turned toward speaker
  • Nodding
  • Body Language
  • Facial expressions (congruent with speaker's message and tone)
  • Questioning (probing) for clarity
  • Paraphrasing
  • Take turns speaking

Sight Words- Try at Home

Puzzling Words: Children love puzzles! Take a 20 to 100-piece puzzle, depending on the size of puzzle your child can handle, and write a sight word on the back of each piece. Have your child pick up a piece and read the word before putting it in the puzzle. If she struggles with the word, read it to her and put the piece aside for her to come back to and try again.

Sight Word Slides 20-21
The slides include sound. Your child can practice reading the word and then self-check by listening.
