Spotlight
Bob Lawrence became director of Community Education & Recreation in September, and this week the first course catalog created under his leadership arrived in mailboxes and was posted online. "Across more than 20 years in this work, my focus has remained the same: building strong partnerships, expanding access to lifelong learning, and creating programs that help communities feel connected, supported, and engaged," he said.
A lifelong passion for lifelong learning
GET TO KNOW BOB LAWRENCE
Community Education & Recreation is about people and connections for Bob Lawrence. It’s the idea that schools are places where learning, creativity, and wellness can happen at every age — not just during the school day.
"Community education helps make schools welcoming hubs where neighbors come together, try new things, and feel a sense of belonging," he said.
Bob began his career upriver in his hometown of Hastings, where he saw how community education can support people at every stage of life — from youth programming and childcare to recreation, access for adults with disabilities, and shared use of school facilities. He served as director in Litchfield, Minnesota, and then South Washington County Schools before coming to Red Wing in September.
How did you become interested in this area of education?
My interest goes all the way back to my childhood. I grew up participating in community education programs, where I first experienced how learning could be fun, social, and community-based beyond the regular school day. In high school, I took that interest a step further by serving as a youth representative on the Community Education Advisory Council. Having a seat at the table helped me understand how programs are shaped by community needs and voices, and how schools can truly serve learners of all ages. Those early experiences stuck with me and ultimately led me to build a career centered on education, lifelong learning, and community connection
Has anything about Red Wing Community Education & Recreation surprised or pleased you?
I’ve been really pleased by the variety of programs offered and by how engaged the community is. There’s a clear interest in learning, recreation, and connection across all ages, which says a lot about Red Wing as a community. That strong foundation puts us in a great position to continue growing our offerings, respond to emerging needs, and explore new ways to serve learners and families now and in the future.
Registration for 2026 winter/spring classes goes live at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. If you would take a class (or classes) tomorrow, what would it be and why?
I’m especially interested in the Wooden Spoon Carving class. It feels like one of those old-time skills that could easily be lost over time, and we’re fortunate to have members of our community who are willing to share their expertise. There’s something really meaningful about learning a hands-on craft and keeping those traditions alive. It’s also soup season, so the Soups and Bread Bowls class has definitely caught my eye — practical, cozy, and perfect for this time of year.
And I have to admit, I’ve got a growing pile of puzzles at home that I’m planning to bring to the puzzle exchange as part of the puzzle competition in February. It’s a fun reminder that community education isn’t just about classes — it’s also about connection, sharing, and a little friendly competition.
What do you do to keep on learning?
I try to live out the idea of lifelong learning in my own life. I’m naturally curious, so I make time to read, listen to podcasts, and seek out professional development that challenges my thinking. Some of my best learning, though, comes from everyday conversations — with colleagues, instructors, and community members — who share their experiences and perspectives. Staying open, asking questions, and being willing to learn alongside others is something I really value, and it’s a mindset I try to bring into both my work and my life.

Red Wing Public Schools has rescheduled the Flight Path 2030 Community Forum to Jan. 12, 2026. - Who should attend: Students, parents, staff, admin, partners, and community members — you!
- What to expect: The evening kicks off at 5:30 p.m. in Hovda Hall with an engaging fireside chat featuring two inspiring experts — Jennifer Rosato, director of the Northern Lights Collaborative for Computing Education at the University of Minnesota; and Hannah Weissman, manager of Strategic Initiatives at Data Science 4 Everyone (DS4E) based at the University of Chicago
- When and where: Red Wing High School doors open at 5 p.m., with the program beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by great conversation with fellow community members. We will offer a snack bar in the cafeteria.

MSOE scholarship applications due Jan. 19
Come to the Flight Path 2030 Community Forum, then encourage your grade 9-11 student to apply for a Milwaukee School of Engineering summer program. Red Wing Public Schools has extended the scholarship application to Jan 19 for summer STEM opportunities through the MSOE. This will give interested students time to discuss their options and a full week to apply after the Jan 12 Flight Path 2030 Community Forum.
Through the generosity of Dwight and Dian Diercks, our students in grades 9-10-11 have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to attend summer programs at MSOE -- free of charge, including Amtrak fare to and from Milwaukee's Intermodal Station. These scholarships are part of Flight Path 2030, our long-term commitment to ensuring every student is prepared for success in computing, data, and artificial intelligence.
Scholarships make it possible for students — regardless of background or circumstance — to explore advanced topics, gain hands-on experience, and build confidence in college-level settings. Applications are due Jan. 19, 2026. Click the link button below to learn more and apply.

I GO teaches survival skills for winter
Fifth graders had Winter I GO experiences before the break. Students participated in navigation games, learned about animal furs, collected firewood, started fires and made bannock -- a rustic quick bread -- over the fire, all under the guidance of Red Wing Environmental Learning Center instructors. This activity is made possible through a grant from the Red Wing Public Schools Foundation. The RWPSF was established in 1995 to enhance the experience of Red Wing students and continues to do so because of generous donor support. To donate, please go to RedWingSchools.org/how-to-donate.
