Dear Mayo Families -
As I was driving into Mayo this week, I found myself taking in the beautiful New England scenery and feeling incredibly grateful that I get to call this region home. There is something pretty special about living in a place where the seasons make such a dramatic entrance. One day, the trees are showing off brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows, and before we know it, we’ll be bundling up in approximately 47 layers of clothing just to walk to the mailbox! New England certainly keeps us on our toes, but I wouldn’t trade its beauty for anything.
This time of year always reminds me how lucky we are to experience such distinct seasons, each bringing its own beauty, its own traditions, and, of course, its own collection of weather-related complaints. But it also offers us a wonderful lesson: change can be beautiful. Every season brings something new, and even as the leaves fall and the landscape changes, there is still so much to appreciate.
I think that lesson applies to our children, too. Every child grows and changes in their own time. Some are finding their confidence, some are discovering new interests, some are learning to navigate friendships, and others are figuring out that perhaps shouting an answer from across the classroom isn't always the best strategy. (We're all works in progress!) As adults, we have the privilege of watching these tiny humans grow, learn, stumble, try again, and surprise us in ways we never expected.
As we head toward the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, with calendars filling up, shopping lists growing longer, and the occasional mystery item appearing in a backpack, I want to encourage all of us to pause for a moment. We spend so much time rushing toward the next event, the next milestone, or the next thing on our to-do list that we can forget to appreciate the wonderful things happening right in front of us.
At Mayo, I am especially thankful for our families, our dedicated staff, and the incredible kiddos who fill our hallways with laughter, curiosity, energy, and the occasional question that leaves us wondering how we have never considered that particular scientific or philosophical possibility before. Your children make this school a very special place, and it is an absolute privilege to be part of their lives.
Here is a little challenge for our Mayo community: Over the next few weeks, take a moment each day to notice something beautiful, celebrate a small success, or tell someone why you appreciate them. Maybe it's the changing leaves, a kind gesture from a classmate, a child who tries something difficult, or simply making it through a Monday morning with everyone's shoes on the correct feet.
We don't have to wait for a holiday, a special occasion, or a major accomplishment to practice gratitude. Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the little ones we might otherwise rush past.
We have had some requests to post each "day" number to help families keep track of when each special is happening. Each week we will post the next week's day numbers. If you are unsure of what numbered day your child has each special, please reach out to your child's teacher.
Thank you!
October 19 - Day 4
October 20 - Day 1
October 21 - Day 2
October 22 - Day 3
October 23 - Day 4
Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us and for being such an important part of the Mayo community. I hope this season gives you plenty of opportunities to slow down, enjoy the beauty around you, laugh a little, and appreciate the people who make your world special.
And if you happen to see me admiring the fall foliage on my drive into school, just know that I'm practicing what I preach. I promise I'm still watching the road!
With gratitude,
Kristin
