Types of Schools That Require It:
- Selective Private Universities: Most participating institutions are elite private colleges (such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, and Duke) with large endowments.
- Select Public Universities: A small number of public institutions use it for institutional aid allocation, including the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the official government form used to determine your eligibility for financial support to attend college, career school, or trade school.
The 2027–28 FAFSA form is now available!
Submitting the application is completely free. It serves as a unified gateway to unlock multiple forms of financial aid from the federal government, state programs, and individual colleges.

- Grants: Free money given based on financial need that generally does not need to be paid back (e.g., Federal Pell Grants).
- Work-Study Funds: Money earned through a part-time job on or near campus to help cover educational expenses.
- Federal Student Loans: Money borrowed from the government that must be repaid with interest, which usually features lower rates and better protections than private loans.
