🙋 Application FAQs - Yes, it's long!📝
- Do I have to wait until my teachers/counselor submit their letters of recommendation before hitting submit? No, if these items are required by the college, you can submit your application at any time and then they will wait until they have all the components of your application before reviewing. If you are applying to a school that does not require letters of recommendation, it is possible that they could review you prior to your letters being received. However, you should speak directly with your teachers about your intentions and dates to make sure this a realistic timeframe for them. Remember the counseling office needs 10 schools days to complete all necessary paperwork and letters. For Nov 15th deadlines that means you need to hand in all paperwork for PHS by the 31st. Teachers may require even more advanced notification. Do not wait until the last minute. Remember, a note of thanks goes a long way 😊
- How do I know if my college requires me to use STARS/self-report my transcript? Here's an updated list of colleges that use STARS - Which Colleges Use STARS? Additional, as with every college that you apply to, you should check their application checklist/requirements to see if this is part of the materials needed.
- How do I let Penncrest know where I am applying? You must fill out a paper copy (available for download or in the counseling office) of the 25-26 Transcript Release and College Application Form and make sure your someone in your family has completed the Class of 2026: PHS Parent/Guardian Permission to Release Official Records Form.
- Are all items actually due by the deadline? Don't some allow materials such as test scores and LORs to arrive later? It depends! You must check the college's deadline to see when everything is due. For STARS institutions, you often have to submit your application, then set up your applicant portal, and then link your STARS. This process can take 3-5 days. Therefore, if a school has a hard deadline of Nov. 1st, we recommend submitting no later than this Monday. For colleges that require test scores, they will usually list the last test date that you can submit in order to be considered for review.
- I talked to my teacher/counselor about a letter last spring. How will they submit the letter? For teachers, you must request their letters through Naviance. There is a linked video in our guide which walks you through this process. For counselors, you will fill the Brag sheet for Counselor Letter of Recommendation and Parent/Family Brag Sheet for Counselor Letter of Recommendation and bring these documents with you to your scheduled meeting made using their calendly link.
- I'm applying Early Decision to a college. Do I have to do anything special? Yes! You will sign the Early Decision Agreement Form (often found in Common App), your parent/guardian will sign it, and your counselor will sign it. You must let your counselor know that you are applying ED. Additionally, you must complete all the financial aid forms required by the institution by their deadlines in order to receive a financial aid package. This can be the same date as their deadline or shortly after and is also true for Single Choice Early Action schools (e.g., Yale).
- What documents do I need for financial aid? Check the school's website. For need-based aid (based on your family's income), you must complete the FAFSA. For institution need-based grants, you may need to complete the CSS Profile. Some schools also require you to upload documents to IDOC. Thoroughly read the details listed on the website.

PA's State Grant Application is Now Open!
- New this year, a pre-screening methodology allows us to perform immediate review of the student’s FAFSA data to determine whether the student meets initial PA State Grant applicant criteria through pre-eligibility checks (for example submitted a complete FAFSA, is a PA resident, not in default, etc.) If the student’s FAFSA data passes these initial checks the student’s record will be created in GrantUS.
- An account activation notice will be sent after the student’s FAFSA data successfully passes the pre-screening process if the student does not have an existing account.
- Activation notices will be sent from noreply@grantus.pheaa.org.
- Activation notices are time sensitive and will expire after 5 days. If the student does not access the link before it expires, they can use Forgot Password on the GrantUS log in page.
