Parent Hawk Talk
October 26th - 30th
Direct From Dylla’s Desk
Hello, Hobby Families!
It is hard to believe we are already approaching the end of October! The school year continues to move quickly, but we are not slowing down at Hobby. Our classrooms are filled with learning, our students continue to grow, and we have plenty of exciting activities ahead as we finish out the month.
This week, we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week, an opportunity to encourage our students to make healthy, positive choices. Throughout the week, students will have opportunities to participate in a variety of themed activities, including dressing up as their favorite book character! I encourage all of our Hawks to get involved, show their school spirit, and have some fun while supporting an important message.
We are also into our food drive, giving our students and families an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. One of the things that makes Hobby special is the way our community comes together to support one another. Every contribution, big or small, is very appreciated.
To wrap up the week, our 6th-grade students will have their dance on Friday! This is always a fun opportunity for our youngest Hawks to spend time with friends, build connections, and enjoy being part of the Hobby community.
With so much happening, I encourage you to take a few minutes to review the Counselors' Corner section of this newsletter for additional information about Red Ribbon Week activities, dress-up days, the food drive, and upcoming events.
As we close out October, I want to thank our families for your continued support and partnership. While we enjoy the celebrations and activities that make middle school memorable, our focus remains on providing meaningful learning experiences and ensuring every student continues to grow academically and personally.
Let's finish October strong, Go Hawks!
As always your proud principal
Greg Dylla
From Hobby Magnet
We have a busy week coming up and are looking forward to seeing everyone participate in our Red Ribbon Week activities. Even Bob is excited!
6th Grade families:
Thank you for the donations for the dance! Please get the donations to the campus no later than Monday if you haven’t already done so. That will allow us to determine if we have to do some shopping still to prepare.
Seeking 6-8 HOSA 7th and 8th graders to volunteer to help with the dance. Please let your CTE teacher know if you can help.
8th Graders will have their 1st guest speaker rotation of the year this upcoming Thursday and it will be about Respiratory Therapy. Our amazing counselor, Mrs. Staib, will also be highlighting the dangers of vaping during this rotation.
HOSA week is November 2-6 and we have some fun activities planned and will share more soon.
Operation Pulse is coming together nicely and we will need 10 HOSA volunteers to help make that day a success. Please see your CTE teacher if you are interested.

Happy Friday Hawk Families!
Please make sure you and your children are taking care of yourselves. Flu season is upon us and many of our students and staff have already been hit hard. Please encourage your students to rest this weekend—health and well-being always come first!
Thank you to all of our families for your continued partnership and support when students are out sick. We know how precious time is, and we truly appreciate everyone working together to keep our students on track.
It is October… wait, November already?!
Time is flying by! When we think about the school year, we like to picture it like a multi-course meal:
The Appetizers (Beginning of the Year): Setting expectations, reviewing past concepts, and getting students warmed up and ready to learn.
The Main Course (Right Now!): The appetizers are cleared and the main course has arrived! The concepts, habits, and skills students are building in the classroom right now form the core foundation for the whole year.
Dessert & Coffee (Spring Semester): After Winter Break, we build on this foundation with higher-level application, deeper problem-solving, and targeted support so every student masters the material before end-of-year milestones.
Because we are in the "main course" of the school year, student learning is our absolute top priority. If your child is struggling or feels confused about a concept, now is the time to reach out! Our teachers are actively using individual conferences and small group instruction to make sure every student gets the support they need to succeed across all of their classes.
📊 Progress Reports are Coming!
Marking Period 2 progress reports will be issued soon! Please take a moment to log into the parent portal with your student to check their grades, review recent assignments, and make sure everything is up to date.
🗓️ Upcoming Student Holiday / District Staff Day
Please mark your calendars: Tuesday, November 3rd is a District Professional Development Day for our teachers and staff. There will be no school for students on this day. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Wednesday!
Thank you for being such a wonderful part of our Hawk community. Enjoy a restful and healthy weekend!

October is Bullying Prevention Month!
Bullying Prevention Tip of the Week
One of the best ways to prevent bullying is to keep open communication with your child. Ask specific questions like, “Who did you sit with at lunch today?” or “Did you see anyone being left out?” These conversations help kids feel supported, recognize unkind behavior, and know they can come to you if something doesn’t feel right.
Red Ribbon Week
Please have your Hawk join us in our recognition of RED RIBBON week OCTOBER 26-30, 2026 as we take a stand to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
Classroom Guidance
Our current round of classroom guidance visits will continue through the next several weeks. Our guidance lesson content area is focused on Personal Health & Safety. We are presenting the district required “Vape Free NISD” lessons for all grade levels. All of our Hawks will learn the facts regarding the dangers of vaping and we will focus on healthy life choices. Specifically by grade level we will introduce the following:
6th grade students
will learn how their brain is undergoing significant development, and that the introduction of nicotine can have serious, lasting consequences.
6th grade guidance lessons through Social Studies classes
7th grade students
will learn about the effects of nicotine on the developing teenage brain, the dangerous chemicals found in vape products, and the serious consequences of being in possession of vape products at school.
7th grade guidance lessons through TX History Classes
8th grade students
will understand the calculated and deceptive nature of the tobacco and e-cigarette industry's marketing and learn how to build strong refusal skills.
AVID & GT classroom guidance
MAPS and Future Investigations classroom guidance
We are excited to partner with you to support your student's success throughout the year. Please reach out to us with any student needs/concerns- we are here to support our Hobby Hawks!

🎉 You Made the Book Fair Magical!
We surpassed our $4,000 goal and made over $5,500 in book fair sales! A huge thank-you to our PTA for advertising the fair and volunteering their time.
Thank you to every family who sent their child to shop, make memories, and experience that special book fair magic! Your support will help fund 🚌 buses to LibraryPalooza and 🎁 reading incentive prizes for our Beanstack reading initiative.
📱 Read, Track, and Celebrate with Beanstack!
Beanstack is a digital reading tracker where students can log their reading, join challenges, and earn badges as they work toward reading goals. Throughout the year, we’ll celebrate their progress with awesome recognition and prizes! 🏅
Families, please encourage your students to track their reading regularly—reading at home counts, too! Students will learn more during their next library class visit in the coming weeks.
🏆 Join Battle of the Books!
Battle of the Books is a team reading competition featuring titles selected for the Lone Star and Maverick reading lists. Students read from a selected list and work together to answer questions about the books. If your child participated in Battle of the Bluebonnets, this is a similar competition for middle schoolers!
We’ll introduce the competition and preview the first chapter of books from the list during upcoming library visits. This year, we’re aiming for the top three—and hopefully first place! 🥇
Our final competition team can have only four students, but everyone interested is encouraged to sign up! We’ll determine who will compete as the competition gets closer.
📅 Competition: March 24, 2027
📝 Permission slip:
📚 Permission slips and the book list will also be available in the library.
⏰ Please Return or Renew Overdue Books!
We currently have an excessive number of overdue books. Please remind your child to return or renew them as soon as possible so other students can enjoy them!
Students do not need to wait until their ELA library day. They can handle their library books before school, during the day with a teacher’s pass, or after school.
💜 Thank you for supporting our readers and helping students become responsible library users!
Have a great weekend!

🎗️ Why Red Ribbon Week Matters
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 in memory of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who lost his life while working to protect the community from drug trafficking. Today, millions of people wear red ribbons to honor his sacrifice and promote a drug-free lifestyle.
At Hobby Middle School, we encourage every student to make healthy, responsible choices and remember that their dreams and goals are worth protecting.
❤️ Let's show our Hobby Hawk pride, wear our red, and celebrate a healthy, drug-free future!
We look forward to seeing everyone participate in this exciting week!
Important Athletic Information
If your child is interested in trying out for a sport this year, and is enrolled in 7th or 8th grade athletics, there is mandatory paperwork that must be completed before they can be eligible to participate.
An athlete cannot try out for a sport before completing ALL UIL paperwork found on the parent portal. (link below)
STUDENTS NEW TO ATHLETICS:

Dress Code: Dress for Success!
Dress Code: Dress for Success School staff recognizes that parents bear the primary responsibility for setting standards for their children’s dress and grooming. However, because of health and safety factors, the influence of dress and grooming on students’ attitude and behavior, and because of the need to prevent disruptive influences and preserve the academic environment of the school, student dress and grooming are appropriate concerns of teachers and administrators. The district’s dress code is implemented (Section D); therefore, students will be expected to follow the guidelines set forth by the district. Dress code standards are extended to extra-curricular activities held on the campus. In an effort to promote a safe and positive school environment which is conducive to learning, students should wear appropriate clothing that will not cause disruptions in learning or safety. Inappropriate, indecent, suggestive or distracting clothing will not be allowed. *Final determination of acceptable dress code and grooming rests with the Principal or his/her designees.
Please Note
Part of supporting our students’ academic and social growth involves maintaining a disruption-free learning space. With that in mind, we want to gently remind our community about our campus dress code expectations—specifically regarding student hairstyles.
Starting this term, we will be fully aligning our campus practices with our NISD dress code policy:
Expectation: Hair must be neat, clean, and kept in a way that does not cause a distraction to the teaching and learning environment.
