We are working with students each day on ways to help them regulate their behaviors and emotions. Life throws us many curveballs and being prepared for those pitches can help lead us to success on and off the field. Here is one easy strategy that your child, and even you, can try.

Because we always have access to the air around us, breathing strategies can be one of the most convenient ways to support regulation needs. Remember that exhaling activates the calming part of your nervous system (parasympathetic), so a great way to regulate in times of emotional dysregulation is to simply increase the length of time that you exhale.

Hint:

If you struggle to fall asleep at night or wake up in the middle of the night, deep breathing can be a very effective way to fall asleep. HopeAlight’s personal favorites for this issue include resonance breathing (inhale 6 seconds, exhale 6 seconds) and 4x4 breathing (inhale for 4 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold it for 4 seconds).

Application at Home (if desired):

1. If you haven’t already, identify one breathing strategy you can use when dysregulated and/or to fall asleep at night.

2. Lead your children in a breathing strategy before bed, after a transition, or when they are emotionally dysregulated.

We request your assistance supporting our students and school. We know that our children learn from adults who care about them. Giving your time, talent and ability will not only help our school, but will enhance our children's learning. Please join us in volunteering where your time allows. All volunteers must pass a background check. Forms are on file for 5 years. If you do not have one on file, or yours needs updated, a background check will be sent home with your student for you to fill out and return.
