Tri-Valley High School
Monthly Newsletter - October 2026
Fall is here and so are parent/teacher conferences!
Parent/teacher conferences are an excellent time to discuss your student's education with their teachers. Families play an integral role for a successful school year for teachers and students. Please continue to encourage good attendance and diligent study. We are so lucky to have a community where teachers and parents can work together for the success of our students. Please see below for more information.
The end of first quarter will be on October 16th.
This will be the last day that any missing or late assignments can be handed in for the first quarter.

There will be two sessions, the first will be at 5:00pm and the second will be at 7:00pm.
The presentation will take place in the high school theater.
This presentation is mainly for seniors/juniors and their parents but anyone who is interested in learning more about FAFSA or Scholarships, please feel free to attend.
College Campus Visits
The junior students have visited STC and USF over the last couple of weeks. In an effort to expose our students to a variety of paths for after high school, we changed up how we do college visits.
Instead of attending a single college fair and doing one tour, students were able to choose up to three different college tours to attend. Students picked between Southeast Technical College (2 year college), University of Sioux Falls (4 year, private university), and South Dakota State University (4 year, public university). The majority of our junior students elected to go on all three of the college tours. 57 students attended STC, 54 went to USF and 72 are signed up to go to SDSU on October 7th.
CTE Spotlight
This year we will be highlighting our CTE (Career and Technical Education) courses provided at TVHS. These courses provide students with information about different careers available in the designated cluster. Students also learn skills needed to be successful in that field. All of these courses use a hands on experience so students can put their skills to the test. TVHS offers courses in the following career clusters:
- Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources
- Arts, Audio/Visual Tech, and Communications
- Business Management and Administration
- Education and Training
- Finance
- Hospitality and Tourism
- Information Technology
- Marketing
- STEM
Ag II and Builders Electric
Students in the Tri-Valley Ag 2 class had the opportunity to learn from industry professional, Talis Johnson, from Builders Electric through a hands-on electrical unit. The experience connected classroom instruction to real-world electrical applications and gave students an opportunity to practice skills they can use in residential, and construction settings.
Students were introduced to several fundamental electrical concepts and techniques. Students learned how to properly complete wire splicing and pigtails, including the importance of making secure and safe electrical connections. Students also learned how to wire a single-pole switch for a light bulb, giving them practical experience controlling a light fixture.
Another major component of the unit was learning how to draw and interpret basic electrical plans. Students observed and created electrical schematics and identifying how different components would be connected before beginning the physical wiring process. This emphasized the importance of planning and understanding an electrical system before installation.
Students were also introduced to 3-way and 4-way switches, learning how multiple switches can be used to control the same light fixture from different locations. The hands-on nature of the lesson allowed students to apply these concepts rather than simply learning them through lecture or diagrams.
The partnership with Builders Electric provided students with industry exposure and helped demonstrate how skills learned in the Ag 2 classroom can translate directly into construction and electrical careers. Having Talis work directly with the students also reinforces the importance of safety, precision, planning, and proper technique when working with electrical systems.
Thank you to Talis Johnson for volunteering his time multiple days in order to help our students with this unit.

From the Counselor
Way to Connect Different situations call for different forms of communication. In an effort to be more available to our students, parents and community, I have added a scheduling link to my website and to my email signature. You can simply click the scheduling link and pick a time! If you don’t see a time that works for you, give me a call or send an email and I will try to find a time that works for both of us. I understand that sometimes phone calls or emails can feel impersonal, and it is my goal to support our Tri-Valley family to the best of my ability. Students are welcome to drop into the counseling office whenever I am available. Please be sure to check Google Classrooms (students) and Rooms (parents/guardians) for important updates. Information that is posted to Google Classroom and Rooms includes scholarships, dual credit information, schedule change/registration information, any upcoming college fairs/tours, and more!
