The Palmer Lake Weekly Scoop!
April 19, 2023
April is Hmong Heritage Month!
- April is recognized as Hmong Heritage Month to pay tribute to the first Hmong family’s arrival to the US in April 1976.
- The four major Hmong dialects can be recognized by the color of their garments – green, white, black or striped.
- There are 18 clans within the Hmong community, and last names represent the different clans. These clans are Chang (Cha), Chue, Cheng, Fang, Hang, Her (Herr), Khang, Kong, Kue, Lor (Lo, Lao), Lee (Ly), Moua, Pha, Thao (Thor), Vang, Vue, Xiong and Yang.
- The “story cloth” has been an important part of Hmong culture for centuries. Story cloths document important scenes, events or narratives from Hmong history and culture. These needlework designs are created on a flat textile surface (rather than as part of a costume).

Health and Safety
Our school nurse, Tammy, is seeing an increase in visits to the health office. In order to keep our students and their families healthy, please read the following from our district website-
"Children should not be in school if they have a temperature of 100 degrees or above. Children who have a contagious illness or are experiencing vomiting, diarrhea or other symptoms of illness that may prohibit active participation in school routines should not be in school until appropriate treatment is secured. Students should be free of elevated temperature, vomiting, and diarrhea symptoms for 24 hours prior to their return to school."

ROAR GoFund Me
We are Palmer Lakes’s R.O.A.R. Let us introduce ourselves! We are a student group in Palmer Lake Elementary. We chose to call ourselves R.O.A.R. because we are Responsible, Outstanding, Ambitious and Respectful! That is also what R.O.A.R. stands for. We are starting our Go Fund Me, hoping to achieve our goal of $1500 for this year and hopefully a little more for the future students who would like to join next year! The reason why we are starting the Go Fund Me is for our group's field trip to Valley Fair at the end of the school year. We would love it if you donated to us!
Why is R.O.A.R important to Palmer Lake and its community? R.O.A.R students are leaders to the school and community. We show how students are supposed to act and can help the younger students to act more Respectful, Responsible and Kind for themselves and others by the examples from R.O.A.R. We also do lots of things like food drives, making posters for the school for events, making cards for nurses and doctors, and helping around the school. Now after all our hard work we did around our community we deserve an award, right? Well for one award we can go to Valley Fair, because Valley Fair can be a fun place and a place full of memories.
Will you consider donating to us so we have the funds to go to Valley Fair and so future R.O.A.R. students also get to go after? We're SO close tour goal!!
