Last Week's Photos
English Language Arts
Last week, we analyzed conflict, theme, and plot in Freak the Mighty through a multi-day station rotation activity. In Writing, we reviewed the four different types of sentence (function), and we revised the spooky photo narratives. Students received feedback on their narratives in three different ways: from a fellow student using a teacher created checklist, from a custom built writing chatbot on MagicSchool (an AI platform), and from me.
Please Note - I have also been experimenting with using AI to generate targeted feedback for students using a standards-based writing rubric. After I review and edit the targeted feedback, I direct students to a mini lesson library that assists them to revise their writing. They are able to access the mini lessons on a slideshow on Google Classroom or on cards in my classroom. This streamlined system is guiding them to grow as independent learners.
This week, students will take the CARS Benchmark #1 on Monday, finish the Freak the Mighty analysis and review stations on Tuesday, and wrap up Freak the Mighty with a test on Wednesday. Students will submit the final draft of their spooky photo narrative on Monday, November 11th. We will move into writing a personal narrative.

Last week, students submitted BEAUTIFUL Unit One Choice Board projects! Be sure to check them out when you come to Parent/Teacher Conferences. Thank you for your partnership at home on this project! On Thursday, the seminarians visited our class to review and reinforce what we have been studying in the Old Testament so far this year. They were truly informative and engaging!
This week, we will continue our study of the Book of Genesis by learning more about Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, and the Tower of Babel. Students will receive the Unit One Study Guide, so they can begin preparing for the test. The study guide will also be posted on Google Classroom. Two extra credit points are available to any student who makes a study guide and turns it TWO days before the test (Wednesday, 11/20).

Math
Honors Math -We completed most of chapter 3 this past week and will take a chapter test Wednesday. We have learned the rules for fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students also learned how to convert units of customary measures (metrics were what we learned in chapter 1).
At Level Math - We learned how to model percents and convert percents into fractions and decimals. Then, we learned how to convert fractions and decimals into percents. The students had a mini “boot camp” on fractions and condos in anticipation of the next topic when we will find the percent of a number. The students will take a test Tuesday on their introduction to percents.
Social Studies
Next week, we will learn more about Greek Mythology, and the students will start their Greek Mythology project. The project is to make a poster of a specific Greek god or goddess. On Tuesday, 11/12, students will have a quiz about Ancient Greece.
Science
This week, sixth grade students prepared for and executed their first test based on reading and understanding textbook information. Over the last few weeks they read, discussed, answered questions, and modeled information from Chapter 19. The major topics were Earth’s motions in space, gravity and inertia. These are complex topics and the students have done an amazing job understanding and starting to analyze what they read. The tests will be returned next week. After the test, we completed a “mini” science fair project experiment.
