This week, we honor and celebrate the incredible dedication of our teachers. Thank you for inspiring our students every day to Be the Best They Can Be!

A teacher’s work doesn’t end when the bell rings. Behind the scenes, our teachers spend countless hours planning lessons, organizing materials, grading assignments, and offering thoughtful feedback — all to help our students grow and succeed.

We are deeply grateful for the care, commitment, and support our teachers provide, not only to their students but to the entire Carver community. Thank you for everything you do!

Next week, along with honoring our teachers, we are proud to celebrate our dedicated school nurses — Mrs. Showan and Mrs. Foley.

We are incredibly grateful for their unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of our school community. Their work ensures our students are safe, supported, and cared for — physically, emotionally, and socially. This essential foundation allows our students to focus on learning and reach their full potential.

Thank you, Mrs. Showan and Mrs. Foley, for the compassion, care, and difference you make every single day!

We are excited to announce that the cafeteria has transitioned to reusable flatware after our April vacation. As we become more aware of the environmental impact of our daily choices, it's crucial that we actively shift away from a "throwaway" mentality and adopt more sustainable practices in our everyday lives.

Why it matters:

Landfill overflow: Single-use items like plastic utensils, straws, and disposable coffee cups contribute significantly to overflowing landfills, harming our planet and ecosystems.

Resource Depletion: Overconsumption of disposable products puts a strain on our natural resources, leading to unnecessary waste.

Let's make a change together! By taking small steps towards reducing our reliance on throwaway items, we can collectively create a more sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come.

We will have buckets available for the students at the disposal station to put their silverware in. With the assistance of the lunch monitors and kitchen staff we will help the students dispose of the silverware properly.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to Theresa Vernazzaro, District Director of Food & Nutrition Services. VernazzaroT@carver.org • 508-866-6137

We are pleased to inform you about an important health initiative available to all Carver Middle High

School students. Carver Middle High School and Hanson Fire Department, in partnership with Carver

EMS and the organization Who We Play For, is offering free cardiac screenings to the youth in our

community.

Event Details:

● Dates: May 9 from 12:00 - 5:00 and May 10, 2025 from 9:00-1:00

● Location: Carver Middle High School - Middle School Gym

● Who: Anyone aged 10-22

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death among young athletes, often due to

undiagnosed heart conditions. These screenings are designed to detect potential heart issues early,

ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.

Why Participate?

● Early Detection: An electrocardiogram (ECG) can identify up to 95% of conditions that may

lead to SCA, whereas standard physical exams detect only about 1%.

● Peace of Mind: Knowing your child's heart health can provide reassurance for families and

allow students to engage confidently in physical activities.

● What SCA looks like: We encourage you to watch this short video.

Registration: To register your child for the free screening, please visit the website at

https://www.whoweplayfor.org/massachusetts-plymouth.

We strongly encourage all parents to take advantage of this valuable opportunity. As a father, I

encourage you to allow your child to participate for peace of mind. If you have questions or concerns

please reach out to me and we can discuss them at Cbarends@Hanson-Ma.gov

Sincerely,

Charley Barends

Hanson Fire Deputy Fire Chief

NWEA - MAP Growth Assessment

Students in grades 6 - 8 will be taking the final round of MAP® Growth™ Assessments from NWEA. Reports will be mailed home to families before the end of the school year which provide data on student growth in math and reading as well as identify areas of of strength and opportunities for academic growth.

MAP Growth tests are unique, and adapt to student's responses in order to best measure individual's skill level. If a student answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results provide a complete picture of what each student knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. Each test (reading and math) takes about an hour. Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about student's learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.

For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.

It's hard to believe but plans are already underway for summer school. While it's too early to determine which students will be required to attend summer school this is a reminder of the requirements.

Middle School Students Grades 6 - 8 who earn a final grade below 60% in Math and/or English will be required to attend summer school.

High School Students Grades 9-12 will be required to attend summer school for the following reasons:

  • Student earned a final grade of below 60% in a current or previous course

  • Loss of credit in a course due to absences

  • Need to make up or meet a graduation requirement

Summer School will run July 7th - July 31st, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 - 12:00.

We recommend that students and families check Aspen regularly for grades and communicate with teachers to make plans to bring up grades if currently in danger of failing a class for the year.

High school families, it is also a good idea to check attendance to ensure that students are not in danger of losing credit for a class. Just a reminder that students are allowed 8 absences for a semester class and 16 absences for a full year class.

As always, please routinely check our district website for updated announcements and information regarding upcoming events.
