Board Meetings are the last Thursday of the Month.

The location for meetings for this year will be at Lynda's house or via Zoom.

Tidbits from the President Tidbits from the President

WOW, another year older…and wiser? I am really enjoying the colder weather and am looking forward to Christmas with ‘most’ of my family (the youngest can’t make it from England). We will be

VRBOing it again this year in Austin. At least I don’t have to clean my house. I will be hanging my Christmas Tree Quilt again and maybe taking a couple of nap quilts for that ‘homey’ feel. I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday in whatever form it takes.

Due to time constraints, there will not be a show and tell. Please save that wonderful quilt for the January meeting. Remember to bring a friend, snacks, money and a bag to carry home your ‘loot’ for the December meeting. See all the details in the Program section. It’s a first for our guild and

I’m expecting a lot of fun and a little bit of crazy!

SECURITY !!!

It’s time to remind everyone that …

When you leave, make sure you exit with SOMEONE. It’s the buddy system. There are occasionally people cutting through the parking lot at night and we don’t want any issues. Everything seems a little more scary at night if you are alone.

ALSO…the church would prefer that we only use one door for entering and leaving the church. So we

will be using the KITCHEN entrance only.

If you do NOT have mobility issues, please use the parking spots further from that door, and leave the close ones for those in need. Thank you.

FRAYED KNOTS

Our December meeting will be a Christmas lunch at Olive Garden

TIGHT KNOTS --

November Meeting

Tight Knots November meeting was held at Patti’s Last Resort. Most of our meeting

was deciding where our next annual meeting would be. We discussed what was important to us in a meeting place and when we wanted to meet. Then we picked a new place in Stephenville and are looking forward to going there next year. Then we set up who would host when/ which month and what our birthday fabrics would be. Next, we discussed our charity choices next year, and what we would do.

We moved on to show and tell. Everything went so fast for me, I didn’t get good notes so basically we turned in 15 NICU quilts, several wheelchair quilts, some baby quilts for the hospital, and 25 pillowcases for safe haven. We have been busy this year. There were lots of oohs and aahs over the beautiful fabrics and patterns.

The rest of our retreat was spent sewing, helping each other make choices for fabrics and positions for blocks, and of course, lots of good things to eat. Many new projects were started and finished. like it retreats, fun was had by all.

December Meeting

Our meeting started with lots of conversations about various topics as usual. This month everybody was talking about all the old men they were taken care of, and how they were falling down. And I thought to myself, we are all just getting old. So we moved on to show and tell. Cheri Bigham showed a mini quilt that she bought at an estate sale. It had many, unusual stitches and a saying on it. Barbara Hughes looked up on the Internet and found out it was from a British children’s poem. It was wonderful we all want it. Margo Grunseich presented her first jelly roll quilt, she also asked how to build a design wall. And each of us had a different idea for her. Pat Wagers showed some Crosstitch she had made. We all marveled at the tiny tiny stitches. She also showed a quilt of valor; it was beautiful with friendship stars. Judi Janes started a baseball quilt that she plans to have finished by Christmas. It’s a gift for her son. Good luck Judi. Cecilia Villa is making a memory bear for someone from her husband’s flannel shirts. This is for the widow’s daughter. It is going to be so wonderful and it was so soft. The rest of us had nothing to show because it’s Christmas and there’s a lot going on. So we moved on to the important stuff red velvet cake, Yum and nuts and candies. Pat Wagers spoiled us big-time. And after a wonderful game of LRC where Patricia Ford won everybody‘s white on white fat quarters, we all wish everybody a merry Christmas and moved on to all the other stuff you’re supposed to be doing this time of year.

Thank you, Pat Wagers for a wonderful meeting and and great food. Also from our bee to all our guild members — have a blessed holiday season and try not to stress out too much. Just sit back and enjoy it.

Start a BEE Start a BEE

One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!

General Guidelines

  • Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
  • A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
  • Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
  • Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
  • Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.

Retreat 2025 Retreat 2025

Shelley has already begun to take reservations for the 2025 retreat, which will be April 3-6, 2025.

Bev Ramsey Fund Bev Ramsey Fund

Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.

Quilts of Valor Quilts of Valor

Quilts of Valor

I hope everyone enjoyed the QOV award ceremony last month. Thank you for attending and making everyone feel welcome. We have officially awarded over a hundred quilts since our Group formed! The number is 102 to be exact. This is all possible because of your support!

The QOVF National Sew Day is February 1, 2025. We will gather at The Berry Patch Quilt Shop again and sew blocks and quilt tops from 10-3. There is room for only eight people to sew, so I’ll have a sign-up sheet at the January meeting. Current QOV members are encouraged to go to the website and register for the sew day. They will be giving away prizes and you have to be registered to be eligible. If you register during the month of December, you will automatically be entered to win one of four prizes (these prizes are separate from the sew day prizes).

If you are not yet a Quilts of Valor member, it’s easy to join and it only costs $10 per year. Go to www.QOVF.org and join Group #84516.

Wishing each of you many blessings this holiday season.

Lovies Lovies

Lovies are used for preemie babies and their mother's so they can become familiar with each other's scent.

If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.

Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Harris Downtown for their NICU unit. We delivered about 150 of them last week, and have asked a representative of the unit to speak briefly about what they mean to the families.

JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items) JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)

The Tight Knots Bee donated 15 NICU quilts which were delivered in November. Also delivered were 12 quilts of assorted sizes - baby, wheelchair, and lap- which were donated by members of the guild.

Thanks to all who contributed! JPS is always grateful for our donations.

Respectfully submitted,

Judi Janes and Carolyn Hughes

NICU Co-Chairpersons

NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts

One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.

JPS has also requested other items for their patients:

Baby Items:

Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes

Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”

Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long

9 inches – circumference for small

11 inches – circumference for large

CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com

Adult Items:

These items are mainly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy at the JPS cancer center and geriatric patients.

Adult quilts or blankets (quilted or fleece)

Ostomy bag covers

Small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients to place under their arms after surgery
