How's Everyone's Summer Reading?

Dear Waikiki School Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer filled with fun, relaxation, and of course – reading! We are excited to encourage all our families to participate in the Hawaii State Library's Summer Reading Challenge, a fantastic opportunity to keep young minds engaged and prevent the dreaded "summer slide."

Numerous studies consistently show the incredible importance of reading over the summer months. Research indicates that children who read regularly during the summer maintain and even improve their reading skills, while those who don't can experience a decline. This summer reading loss can have a significant impact on academic performance in the upcoming school year. Participating in a summer reading program helps children:

  • Maintain Literacy Skills: Keep those hard-earned reading abilities sharp and ready for next year.
  • Expand Vocabulary: Discover new words and concepts, enriching their language.
  • Foster a Love of Reading: Make reading an enjoyable and lifelong habit.
  • Explore New Worlds: Spark imagination and curiosity through diverse stories and information.

This aligns perfectly with our school's Habits of Mind, especially:

  • Persisting: Encouraging children to stick with challenging texts and complete reading goals.
  • Thinking Flexibly: Exposing them to different genres and perspectives.
  • Striving for Accuracy: Developing comprehension and critical thinking skills.
  • Thinking about Thinking (Metacognition): Reflecting on what they've read and how it connects to their world.
  • Communicating with Clarity and Precision: Engaging in discussions about books and sharing their ideas.

How to Participate:

Signing up is easy and fun! The Hawaii State Library uses the Beanstack App to track reading progress. Simply download the app, create an account, and register for the Summer Reading Challenge. Be sure to select Waikiki Elementary School when you register using your Clever account!

By logging your reading minutes on Beanstack, you'll not only help your child maintain their skills, but you'll also help our school climb the leaderboard! We are currently ranked #16, and with your help, we can shoot to the top! Imagine Waikiki School taking the #1 spot – what an accomplishment for our community!

Let's make this a summer of reading adventures! Happy reading, Waikiki School!
