Principal Corner
Hello AES families,
Thank you to everyone who came out on a wintery Wednesday night to join us for the Cooks and Books event at AES. It was fantastic to see so many families join together to celebrate the hard work of our students. Nearly 300 people joined together to share a meal prepared by the children and to share in different literacy activities. From reader's theater performances to models representing animals in three-dimensional scenes to create a miniature museum exhibit on fox and moose, the students presented their work with pride.
It is important to us to gather feedback following events at school so we can reflect on the event and continuously improve family engagement. We ask that all families complete this reflection survey to help us plan our next event.
Dinner and a movie? That sounds great! Come to the Conval High School, on January 30th, to celebrate learning differences. Our students at AES have been helping to prepare for the event by making placemats for the dinner. This event is free and open to all of the surrounding communities. There is a flyer below containing all of the event details.
If you have not completed the permission slips for Crazy 8s, do so now. Students are already buzzing with excitement about Crazy 8s beginning. The PTO is sponsoring an 8 week program, Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30, beginning February 21st. The club is free!
All students K-4 are welcome to attend free of charge. There will be two separate multi-age groups with different activities each week, grades K-2 and 3-4. Sign-up sheets are attached to this newsletter below and have been sent home in hard copy from classroom teachers. Please sign and return the forms as soon as possible so we know how many groups of students will need to prepare. If you need another hard copy form, please call the main office or contact your child's classroom teacher.
Be well,
Beth

PreK
First Friends 1 have enjoyed reading the book Snowballs by Lois Ehlert, then creating their own interesting and amazing snow people using lots of different materials. Other winter stories we love are A Hat for Minerva Louise and The Snowy Day!
Kindergarten
What a busy week in Kindergarten! There was a lot of excitement around our Books and Cooks Literacy Night and the fresh snow we got earlier in the week. It was also our 90th day of school on Tuesday which means we are officially halfway through our Kindergarten year! Students in Ms. Lawler’s class celebrated the halfway day by completing half of a drawing and writing about what it would be like if they were half human/half animal. One student said that if he were half human/half squid, he would be able to “fit through tight spaces.” Our class has such creative ideas!
At the end of the fun and busy week, the students in Ms. Dibble’s class had the opportunity to explore different puzzles. We did at least one math puzzle, then any puzzle of their choosing. There was so much joy and a huge sense of accomplishment when they were finished with their puzzle! They showed a great deal of teamwork!
Grade 1
Mrs. Sullivan’s class is finished working on our Moose study. We worked closely with Mrs. Aborn in the library creating our dioramas and nonfiction writing in the classroom. We have made great progress in our writing!
Grade 2
Grade 2 decorated aprons and made butter together for the Cooks and Books event!
Grade 3
Third graders were excited to share their learning with families this week at our Books & Cooks event. Students have been working on their reading fluency by working in groups on four different reader’s theater scripts including “The BFG”, “Whales”, “The Friendly Dragon” and “Jack & The Beanstalk”. We also had a great time making crockpot ziti for the big event. We learned to read a recipe, crack eggs carefully, measure ingredients and layer ingredients in the crockpot. It was delicious, and lots of fun!
Grade 4
This week fourth graders compared and contrasted two different versions of Stone Soup before working together to prepare Crockpot Potato Soup for our school’s Books & Cooks Literacy Night! Students enjoyed peeling potatoes, measuring ingredients, and especially loved using food choppers to dice potatoes and onions! Only a few tears were shed and the soup turned out delicious! During Books & Cooks students took their families on a tour of our classroom showing off all of their amazing learning. We even created recipes for soups based on our Eagle Core Values! It was a great night!
Crazy 8s
MuzArt
This week third and fourth graders practiced their instruments. Third grade has started recorder and can play B! Fourth grade has started ukulele and can play the chords C and A minor. Fourth grade has also been practicing their two songs for the district concert taking place on March 19th(more info to come).
Kindergarten got to explore primary and secondary colors by mixing paint. They also got to exploring structure making through building blocks. First grade made beautiful sunsets while learning about warm and cool colors.
Grade 4
Miss Gilbert’s 4th grade class met their class eagle goal and earned a fort buiding day today! The 4th graders earned class eagles by showing our eagle values of respect, honesty, kindness, cooperation and grit. Nice job 4th graders!
