PLTW Biomedical Innovations Students Explore Medical Lab Careers at Hospital PLTW Biomedical Innovations Students Explore Medical Lab Careers at Hospital

Ms. Kirsty Houck's Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Innovations class at the High School, visited WellSpan York Hospital last week to learn about the medical laboratory scientist career field and to tour the labs at the hospital. Students learned about the areas of immunology, chemistry, microbiology, blood banking, and urinalysis. They were able to perform urinalysis tests on 2 case study patients and determine the correct diagnosis for each patient.

Interns from the hospital led the group to the various testing labs of the hospital where students were able to get a first hand glimpse at the processes of blood typing and storage, automated chemistry testing, microbiology testing in action, and more. It was an amazing experience and they learned how to connect information from class to a real life hospital setting.

Counting Down to Hatch Day: Lincolnway Second Graders Explore Embryology Counting Down to Hatch Day: Lincolnway Second Graders Explore Embryology

Second grade students at Lincolnway Elementary are just a few days away from hatch day! Students have been learning all about embryology, oviparous animals, and life cycles. Students in Ms. Christine McKee's class have been turning their eggs daily, checking temperatures on the incubator, candling (looking inside the eggs), and learning all about the growth of chickens. Hatch day is Monday, April 7th. Be on the lookout for sweet chick photos coming soon!

Exploring Enzymes: Hands-On Chemistry in Ms. Aguilar's Biology Class Exploring Enzymes: Hands-On Chemistry in Ms. Aguilar's Biology Class

Students in Ms. Paola Aguilar's biology class at the High School took a hands-on approach to the topic of enzymes. Students got the opportunity to use everyday baking yeast to make four different chemical reactions. Through this activity, students were able to observe and compare how enzymes impact the rate of reaction and feel the change of free energy during the lab experiment.

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales

First-graders and kindergartners from Wallace Elementary took a fun-filled trip to the Appell Center to see The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. This hilarious musical, based on the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, playfully turns traditional fairy tales upside down. With characters jumping in and out of stories and twists at every turn, nothing is quite as you remember it! The performance celebrated creativity and encouraged students to imagine new possibilities within familiar tales.

Check out the photos below of Ms. Jennifer LaCour and Ms. Tracy Overlander’s first-grade classes as they got ready to enjoy the show!

Does your family drink soda or other canned beverages? Do you use soup or other foods with metal pull tabs? Throughout April and May, the Middle School is collecting can tabs to support the Hershey Ronald McDonald House.

This marks the seventh year our school has participated in this initiative! The Ronald McDonald House provides a comforting place for families to stay while their child receives medical care. The collected can tabs are recycled to help fund this vital service for families in need.

Please save the tabs from soda cans, soup cans, and other pull-tab containers and drop them off at the Middle School by the last day of school, May 30th.

For any questions, contact our Middle School Reading Specialist, Ms. Jill Raudensky, via email at jeraudensky@wyasd.org. Thank you for your support!
