Ms. Hanson's Notes
We have wrapped up the testing season here at FAVE. We are looking forward to all the events coming up including 5th grade’s visit to BHMS next Tuesday, Field Day next Friday and the FAVE Finale on the 21st. As the weather has been a bit unpredictable, our lost and found has grown. Please encourage your student to check for any lost items. Additionally, a reminder to check with your teachers and room parents before sending in any food items.
We look forward to seeing you on the Ave for one or more of the special events, but in particular, please join us for our Volunteer Breakfast on the 23rd from 7:30-9:30. We are also hosting a dance party for students that afternoon. We would love to have parents lead some dances (no fancy moves required). If you are interested, please sign up below.

Oliver Mendel - Wordmaster Champion
Wordmasters Challenge
A student representing City Schools of Decatur recently received a perfect score in the last of three meets in the 2024-2025 WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually.
Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fifth grader Oliver Mendel at Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary earned a perfect score of 20 on the recent challenge. Nationally, only 84 fifth graders achieved this result.
The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by Mrs. Broman-Fulks, Edwin Ellis and Charee Waugh.
Last Day of School Dance
You're invited to FAVE's Last Day of School Dance!! We'd love for parents to join us as we celebrate another successful year around the FAVE sun! Volunteer here.
There are two ways to help:
- Lead a Dance: If you're a BRAVE soul who likes to dance, this is for you! We'd like to invite you to lead a simple choreographed dance for your child's grade level. You'll tell us the (school appropriate) song, plan a simple dance, and take the stage! Students had a blast with parent dancers at last year's school dance. Let's see your moves, parents!
- General Crowd Control: Help us work the door for students who may need a noise break or bathroom break, monitor the floor to stop runners or out of control dance moves, or encourage general fun and safety!
Please click the link to sign up. If you choose to lead a dance, please list the song in the comments.
Thank you!
- 3rd Grade: 12:15 - 12:45
- 4th Grade 12:50 - 1:20
- 5th Grade 1:30 - 2:00
Library Books Due
All library books are due back on Monday, May 12. Today email notices were sent out with any outstanding books or fines. This might include missing books from K-2 schools. If your child is missing a book from your K-2 school, please contact that librarian to resolve that issue.
If a book is lost, the price of the book is included in today's email. Please do not send a replacement copy, as we try to purchase library bound copies when possible. You may send payment in cash or in a check payable to F.AVE. We cannot give change or refunds. If you find a book after you pay for it, you may keep it or donate it back to the library.
It is very important that students end the year with a clear library account. We encourage students to come talk to Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Dawson with any questions or concerns about their books.

Last Day: Please Share your Feedback about Grading Policies
Last school year, our school board approved and implemented a new grading policy to create greater consistency, transparency, and alignment with student learning. As we complete the first full year under this policy, we contact families and staff to gather feedback on how the changes have been experienced across our schools.
Your input is significant in helping us understand what aspects of the policy are working well and where adjustments may be needed. Please take a few moments to complete the brief surveys below and share your feedback with us by today, May 8.
K-5 survey (four questions)
6-12 survey (six questions)CSD Nonresident Tuition Applications are Open Now
Applications for nonresident tuition for the 2025-2026 school year are open now through May 15. Nonresident tuition seats are being offered in the K-2 and 3-5 schools for grades with available space. A lottery selection process will be used to enroll nonresident tuition applicants, and a waitlist will be created if necessary. The annual tuition rate for nonresident students for the 2025-2026 school year is $7,883. Visit the district's nonresident tuition webpage for information on how to access and complete the nonresident tuition application.
Enrollment forecasts will help determine the different number of tuition-based seats available for each grade and school, which are subject to change. As a public school district, CSD remains tuition-free for students residing within the city limits of the City of Decatur. Tuition is based on a state formula and is calculated each year based on the average educational cost of a student minus funds that are received from the state.
Action Required: Important End-of-Year School Clinic Reminders
Please ensure you complete the following steps by the end of this school year in preparation for the next. All health forms are on the CSD website.
Pick Up Medication: Please remember to pick up your child's medication from the school clinic by the last day of school. Medications cannot be stored over the summer and will be discarded if not collected. Students are not allowed to take medication home themselves. If you cannot pick up the medication, please email the school nurse to make alternative arrangements before the school year ends.
Update Healthcare Plans: Update your student's health forms by the start of the next school year. Students with a medical condition (e.g., asthma, seizures, diabetes, food allergies) must have a new healthcare plan, signed and dated by both their parent/guardian and physician, at the start of the new school year.
Authorize Medication at School: An Authorization of Medication Administration Form is required for each medication administered at school. Parents/guardians must drop off all medications at the clinic. Over-the-counter medications must be unopened and require a parent/guardian signature. OTC medications also require a prescriber's signature if the dosage exceeds guidelines. Prescription medications require a prescriber's signature.
Authorize Self-Carry Medications: For students authorized to self-carry emergency medications (such as an inhaler, epinephrine auto-injector, or insulin/diabetic supplies), their physician must indicate this on the Care Plan and the Authorization for Student to Carry Medication form, confirming the student's ability to self-administer. This form requires signatures from the physician, student, and parent.
CSD's School Health team appreciates your attention to these important health matters and thanks you for the privilege of caring for your children.
Register Students for 2025-2026 Transportation
Transportation registration is required for all students who intend to ride the bus. Families may register a student for transportation for the 2025-2026 school year by selecting the appropriate link below:
Bus Registration – Same School: For students who will remain at their current school next year.
Bus Registration – New School Transition: For students who will transition to a new school next year (for example, entering kindergarten, 3rd grade, 6th grade, or 9th grade).
Completing this form helps us accurately plan bus routes and ensure your student is assigned transportation based on their school placement for the upcoming yea
Extra Mile Awards
Students: Do you know a teacher or CSD employee who has gone "the extra mile" this year? Nominate them for the CSD Extra Mile Award! The Extra Mile Award is an annual award that allows students to show appreciation for the teachers or staff they feel go above and beyond what is expected of them.
Students at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay or submit it on behalf of a student who is unable to write the nomination). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.
Click here to submit a nomination by May 22, 2025. These awards will be presented at the CSD Opening Day Celebration in July.
