The Benefits to Reading Aloud
Reading aloud fosters many skills needed for reading readiness and for promoting a lifelong love of reading; that is why Read Aloud 15 Minutes is challenging every parent to spend 15 minutes reading aloud to their children every day.
So what exactly are the benefits?
For many of us, our earliest and fondest memory of books is a special adult reading aloud to us. Fostering the joy in reading is just one of the many benefits of reading to your child. Being read to allows children to connect to a text without the stress of decoding giving them the opportunity to really think about what is being read.
This allows them to practice important skills such as visualizing, inferring, predicting, and questioning. Parents act as role models and show children these skills as well as demonstrating fluency. As you read aloud and discuss the text you are giving your children the background knowledge and experiences that will allow them to connect
to a wider variety of texts. Let’s face it, reading is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your children and enjoy some time together.
Are you up to the challenge?
Kudos to those who already read aloud to their children every day. If this isn’t a part of your daily routine why not give it a try. Happy reading!
