ELO: Before & After School Extra Learning Opportunities
We are excited to announce that beginning this Monday afternoon, Madison Middle School will be offering before and after school Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) before and after school. We have a diverse range of opportunities for students, from athletic conditioning and skill building, Lego Robotics, crochet, video gaming, art, STEM and tutoring in all academic areas. Morning sessions are from 7:30am to 8:30am, and afternoon sessions are from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. No sign-up is necessary -- just look at the schedule and show up! Run by our teachers and free for all Madison students! We encourage students who are dropped off at school early or have to wait after school for a ride to join a session. Students in AM/PM are welcome to join too.
Attendance
If you know your student will be absent, please call our office at (760)940-0176 ext. 62009 and notify our attendance tech Mrs. Mayra Bermudez or by email to mayrabermudez@vistausd.org to clear their absence. If you have a medical note, please bring it into the office. We kindly ask that families do their best to schedule medical appointments outside of school hours to maximize learning time at school. Please see the VUSD attendance information guide (English & Spanish)for understanding excused and unexcused absences. Thank you!
Class 3 eBikes Are Not Permitted at School
A class 3 bike offers pedal assistance up to 28mph, and riders must be 18 or older to operate them. Law enforcement met with us before school started and reported that they are ticketing teens under 18 riding class 3 bikes, and students run the risk of having the bike impounded. There is a lot of traffic on Lake blvd. before and after school, and we want to ensure everyone is safe. We ask that you check to ensure your student is riding an appropriate and legal bike to school. Click HERE for more info.
This week we will be checking for bike licenses, and students who do not have them by next week will not be permitted to ride their bikes to school. Hopefully they have already taken a safety course like the one last Saturday. Please see below for more safety course opportunities.
Free Bike Safety Program: September 3rd
All students riding a bike (e-bike or pedal powered), a scooter, or a skateboard are required to complete a safety training course or attend an in-person bike education class in order to ride to any school in the district. We will host an in person class on Wednesday, September 3 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in the library.
No need to sign up -- just show up!
PBIS & Minga App Messages
PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, is a framework that promotes a positive school culture by teaching and reinforcing respectful, responsible, and relationship-focused behaviors. At Madison, we are shifting toward more incentives and rewards for positive behavior rather than relying only on negative consequences. Using the Minga app, students will earn “Madison M-Points” for positive actions, which they can trade in at the new student store supported by our PTA, and we hope to launch the store in September. Parents and guardians will also receive text updates whenever their child is recognized for the 3 R’s, ensuring more communication about what students are doing well -- and there is no need to down load the app. Students will be able to track their points from their online Minga account on their school Chromebooks. In addition, Minga will serve as our digital hall pass system and will eventually support flexible opportunities for extra help and enrichment during the school day.
Picture Make-up day
Students can take their ID and yearbook photograph on Monday, September 8th during PE.
After School Program at John Landes Park Begins September 2nd.
See the flyer below for information about Project REACH at John Landes Park. It's a great program for students who need a safe, supportive, and fun place to be after school.
