Using AI at West Seneca Central School District

An Update for Students & Families

Dear West Seneca Central School District Families,

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools become more common in everyday life, we want to share how West Seneca is approaching AI in our schools. This update outlines our district's effort to support the responsible and safe use of these tools while keeping human learning at the center. At the heart of our strategy is empowering educators as they build meaningful and engaging learning experiences - with or without AI.

AI Guidelines:

Our school created Policy 5840 to set rules, guidelines, and expectations for using AI, both for students and staff. A district focus group, that included teacher-voice, helped to craft ideas that were included in the final policy adopted by the Board of Education in June 2026.

AI can give good ideas, but it cannot do thinking for you! A person’s own brain, imagination, and hard work are the most important parts of learning. AI is just a helper.

Important AI Rules to Follow:

For students, remember these simple rules:

Ask First: Only use AI if your teacher says yes before you start your work.
Do Your Own Best Work: You are in charge of your own learning. Always tell the truth about where your ideas came from.
Keep Information Safe: Never type your name, phone number, address, or other personal details into AI programs.

The AI Color Traffic Light:

We use friendly traffic-light colors called "Shades of AI" to help provide guidelines, like the ones shown below.

Things to Be Careful About:

AI can make mistakes! Always keep these four tips in mind:

AI Can Be Wrong: Sometimes AI makes up fake facts that sound real. Always check if information is true!
Unfair Thinking: AI gets its info from the internet, so it can repeat unfair ideas. Be sure to carefully think about what information to use.
Who Made It?: AI uses art and words created by real people, so be careful when sharing work made by AI.
AI is Not a Friend: AI is just a software tool, not a real person. Talk to real friends, parents/guardians, or teachers when you need help or advice.

Safe Tools: Not every AI software tool that exists has been approved for use in our district. You can see our list of approved school software right here. Students should always check with their teacher if a tool is approved to use when in doubt.
