Good evening DHS,

It has been another busy and positive week as we head into October. From a successful beginning to the academic year, a wonderful and impactful start to the new cell phone and personal device policy, positive results across the full fall athletic season, our club fair this week, casting for MA MA MIA complete, the band preparing for its competition season, DECA getting projects created, our Artists doing their incredible work, Red Ribbon week 2026 with its theme of Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free coming up in October, Grateful Friends having their pink out week to support adults with Cancer the same week, our UNIFIED basketball game coming up on October 6th with its focus this year on IMPACT there is so much happening at DHS and we ask for you to read about some of our wonderful activities this week.

We hope that everyone is well and safe after this weekend's storm. Soon we will be witnessing the brightness and beauty in the skies and foliage that surround us each day here in the Commonwealth which is always a perfect reminder as Maya Angelou says that, “Every storm runs out of rain”.

The dichotomy of the “outdoors”, which balances the peace within nature and in the other ways we find our inner peace with the daily responsibilities and the world around us that often are not as peaceful, reinforces to me once again that despite our best wishes, the only thing we truly can control is our reaction to any situation thrust in front of us. With that, I refer to a poem that I have shared previously, which was quietly given to me by a senior student when I was a teacher of Psychology. It’s impact has stayed with me throughout my life as a parent, educator and a member of this global community and is a lesson that we have heard, but sadly everyone of us sometimes forgets - that we must take a step back and not react immediately until we have truly seen “the writing on the wall”. I hope its message resonates with you regardless of hearing it previously.

The Writing On The Wall

Thank you everyone here in Danvers for taking the time to care, for reading the “writing on the wall”, and for helping our students experience the value of seeing the whole story. In a social media driven, instant gratification and reactionary world, this habit of mind is vital for future success, healthy relationships and the support every child, parent and adult needs be it at home or in the workplace or in the community. DHS and DPS must collaborate rather than compete in order to ensure that our students PK - 12, our Post Grad programs collaborate seamlessly together.

We must all remember that everyone within DHS, DPS and the Danvers Community are here to take care of all of our students while taking care of themselves and their loved ones and I am always proud of the efforts they give and the professional support they provide in so many different ways. As always, I want us all to thank our Assistant Principals, Directors of Special Education, Curriculum and Athletics, Nurses, Faculty, Counselors, Social Workers, Administrative Assistants, IT and Library Staff, BCBA’s OT and PT specialists, IA’s and BT’s, Food Service and DPW Staff, Coaches, Advisors as well and Central Office Administration and Staff, School Committee, and our town council members, employees and community partners. The collaboration, and incessant belief that we must breathe before reacting, as the story showed us, is vital to a successful, productive and collaborative year and more importantly it is needed to keep our balance and our positivity. I deeply appreciate everyone who is trying to breathe, even when things are not easy.

Be well, be safe and most of all be … understanding of the full picture.

Have a wonderful week everyone,

Alan Strauss

2026-2027

Dear Students and Families,

As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we want to make sure all students and families have access to the important policies, procedures, and expectations that guide our school community.

Please take some time to review the DHS handbook:

Danvers High School Supplemental Student Handbook

The handbooks include important information regarding attendance, academics, student behavior, technology, school procedures, and other expectations for students at Danvers High School.

We encourage families to review the handbook together and discuss the expectations with their students. Having a shared understanding of these policies helps us work together to create a safe, respectful, and successful learning environment for everyone.

High school is about so much more than the learning that happens inside the classroom, and we want every student at Danvers High School to find a place where they feel inspired and empowered. That is why we’re hosting our annual Activities Fair next week during COMMUNITY BLOCK. Grade 10 students will attend the Activities Fair on Monday 9/28, Grade 11 and 12 students will be at the event on Tuesday 9/29, and Grade 9 students will be there on Wednesday 9/30. With our amazing student leader representatives from over 26 different clubs and student organizations, there is truly something for everyone. Whether your student wants to advocate for a cause with their peers, dive into community service, compete on an academic team, explore creative arts, or just hang out with peers who share their favorite hobby, this is their chance to check it all out. Getting involved is one of the absolute best ways for students to build confidence, make lifelong friends, and make Danvers High School feel like home. Please take a moment to encourage your child to walk around, ask questions, and sign up for a group or two. Ask them next week which tables caught their eye—you might be surprised by what sparks their interest!

GRATEFUL FRIENDS GRATEFUL FRIENDS

DHS has partnered with the local charity, Grateful Friends, on an initiative meant to bring awareness to cancer and raise funds for the charity. For context, Grateful Friends specializes in helping patients with Cancer; this includes, but is not limited to, helping pay utility bills and sending personalized gift baskets, with the overall goal to bring a smile to patients and relieve financial stress.

On Thursday, October 22nd, Grateful Friends wants to see DHS and the other respective districts across the Northshore do a full on “pink out” - with students showing up to school wearing pink shirts. The shirts will be made by Grateful Friends, and available for sale online and at different school events. Students will be able to purchase a shirt at a discounted $15.00, while families can purchase a shirt for $25.00. With the charity being a completely voluntary foundation, the proceeds will go back to the charity and be used to help out cancer patients. Be on the lookout for more information, and help DHS go pink for cancer awareness!

REACH MY TEACH REACH MY TEACH

We are excited to share the Reach My Teach communication between parents/guardians and students throughout the school day.

Reach My Teach is designed to strengthen communication between home and school, providing families with an additional way to stay connected to their student’s daily school experience.

With our bell-to-bell cell phone policy now in place, we recognize that families may occasionally need to share important information with their student during the school day. Reach My Teach provides an additional way for parents and guardians to communicate with their child, and for students to reach out to their families when they need to share information.

Please click on the link below to learn more about Reach My Teach and how to get started:
