A Message from Mrs. McClure

Good Afternoon 56G Families,

I hope this message finds you well as we move into the beautiful heart of autumn. It's hard to believe how quickly the first quarter has flown by. We have had a very productive start to the school year, and we are proud of the progress our students have made during this transition.

End of Quarter 1
First, some important information for our sixth-grade families. Quarter 1 is officially drawing to a close, and our sixth-grade students will begin Quarter 2 on Monday, October 27th. Mrs. Teal is working to ensure a smooth transition as students start their new electives. Students will receive their updated electives for Quarter 2 during the week of October 20th.

Academic Intervention Groups
We are continually focused on the academic growth of every student. For the past two weeks, staff met to discuss how we can best support our students in the areas of reading and math. This week, we launched our reading intervention groups during Super Switch to provide students with targeted support. Our dedicated staff will carefully monitor each student's progress and reconvene in November to review the data and determine next steps. We are excited to see the growth that our students make over the next month.

Bullying Prevention Month
October is Bullying Prevention Month, a time to reinforce our school-wide commitment to SOAR and showing kindness to one another. Later this month, our teachers will conduct a special lesson focused on defining bullying and empowering students to be upstanders. Our goal is to ensure a safe and positive school environment where every student feels valued and supported.

PTC Fundraiser
A huge thank you to our PTC for the hours that they have put in to plan and kick-off our Amazing Race Fundraiser. We appreciate everyone who has participated thus far. Your support is invaluable and directly contributes to our school's success. The funds raised help provide our students and staff with resources that enhance our educational programs and create a better school experience for all. We deeply appreciate your partnership and generosity. I know our students are excited about duct taping Mr. Arnoys to the wall if we hit our $25,000 goal. As of this morning, we were at $7,000, only $3,000 away from our first goal where we will have a popsicle party for students.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. We look forward to a successful and engaging second quarter.

In partnership,

Melanie

October: Strengthening Executive Functioning Skills in 6th Grade

This month, our school counselor, Mrs. Teal, is teaching a lesson focused on Self-Control, a critical executive functioning skill during Super Switch with our sixth grade students. This lesson is being used to help our 6th graders strengthen skills necessary for success in middle school and beyond.

Self-control is essentially our brain's control center, helping students make responsible and helpful choices. The lesson will focus on three main areas of self-control:

Attention/Focus: Ensuring they concentrate on what they should be doing and don't get distracted.
Thinking Before Acting: Considering their options and the consequences of each choice before acting, and stopping themselves from doing things they shouldn't.
Coping with Strong Feelings: Using effective skills to relax their brain and body when upset so they can think more clearly.

Through interactive activities and scenarios, students will learn what self-control means and practice identifying how they would use it in different situations. This work aligns with the development of Self-Awareness and Responsible Decision Making, helping students build self-discipline and effective coping skills.

We encourage you to talk with your 6th grader about these topics at home. Ask them:

  • What is your strongest self-control skill?
  • What's one thing you want to work on?
  • What do you do to calm your brain and body when you're feeling worried or angry?

Congrats to our Sixth Grade Band and Orchestra Students Congrats to our Sixth Grade Band and Orchestra Students

We are so proud of our sixth grade band and orchestra students on successful performances this week. They have gone from learning how to assembly and hold their instruments to playing multiple songs as an ensemble. We cannot wait to see how they continue to grow as musicians this year.

Event Information
Renaissance Club

The 56G Renaissance club is an opportunity for students to make 56G a place to belong, not just a place to go. The Renaissance club will plan events designed to build a positive and student led culture inside our school. This is an opportunity to provide input and practice leadership skills while also making 56G more comfortable. In previous years, clubs at our other schools in the district have focused on student and staff acknowledgement and done projects such as murals and school-wide events. What projects happen at 56G will be up to the students in the club.

Students will meet in the 5th grade collaborative space from 2:55-3:30pm.
