25-26 Professional Learning Calendar
The 2025–26 Professional Learning calendar is taking shape and includes a strong focus on supporting instructional priorities across all grade levels. Highlights include dedicated time for Collaborative Teams (CTs), building-level collaboration, and job-specific professional development for various staff groups. As we move closer to the start of the new school year, additional details and agendas will be shared to ensure everyone is well-prepared and informed.
Challenge Gifted Students Retreat
On April 24, 3rd through 5th grade Challenge students experienced a day of extended learning. 4th and 5th grade students worked throughout this Spring to plan the 20 sessions offered on topics such as story illustration, light and glass, fiber arts, and much more. The students even found and invited guest speakers to lead those sessions. We are thankful to the many community members, parents, and especially the Challenge teacher team who helped to make the day a success!
MS Grade Card Work
A dedicated group of middle school teachers has been meeting regularly to explore and implement evidence-based grading practices, grounded in the principles outlined in Grading from the Inside Out by Tom Schimmer. Their collaborative efforts have focused on aligning grading with clear learning outcomes and separating academic achievement from behavior. As this important work continues, we will use the summer months to deepen their understanding and develop consistent practices and tools in preparation for a broader rollout in the 2025–26 school year.
RQS Leadership Retreat-Elevate RQS
On July 28-30, the district will kick off our 25-26 school year with its annual leadership retreat. This year's theme is "Elevate RQS". Our goals will include providing training and collaboration regarding School Progress Plans (SPPs), Human Resources Training, Legal Updates and Community Engagement Best Practices. Be on the look out for email invitations later in June!
FOCUS Update
The FOCUS team has shifted our support to reviewing attendance records, preparing reports for the upcoming school year, and updating the online enrollment process.
Our attendance review has focused on identifying students with unusually high or low attendance patterns. To support early intervention, the team has developed new reports to help schools identify at-risk students earlier in the year. We're also creating building-level attendance and discipline reports—such as the 90 at 90 report, incident counts by time of day, and incidents by day of the week. These reports will be shared at the leadership retreat in late July.
For online enrollment, we are streamlining screens to make the process easier for families. For example, there will be new options for collecting digital signatures. The team is also building alert features that will notify staff when student enrollment records require review.
Summer Curriculum Revisions
Curriculum revisions will take place throughout June and early July, focusing on updating unit maps, pacing guides, common assessments, and proficiency scales across multiple courses. This important work is guided in part by feedback collected through the Curriculum Feedback Form, ensuring that teacher voices help shape improvements. In addition, targeted efforts will be made to align K–5 Science, High School Physical Science, and High School Chemistry curricula to newly adopted instructional resources, supporting greater consistency and coherence across grade levels.
Profile of a Learner - Tactic Team Work
One part of the transformation of learning in RQS is the commitment to make our Profile of a Learner characteristics an integral piece of preparing students from Pre-K through 12th grade. During the Ford NGL process, a tactic team consisting of teachers, counselors, building staff, district staff, and community members has developed a plan to identify developmentally appropriate benchmarks that align with RQS’s “Profile of a Learner” characteristics while engaging with community stakeholders and natural ways to integrate with our curriculum both SEL and academic. We committed to these four priorities:
- Utilizing the five pillars of a Profile of a Learner, define the characteristics with a common language for grade level appropriateness.
- Identify opportunities to integrate Profile of a Learner qualities with daily instruction.
- Develop a communication plan to implement the Profile of a Learner and engage adult stakeholders.
- Create a plan to monitor and evaluate the students’ learning and mastery of the Profile of a Learner qualities.
We know that this transformation will take multiple years to enact, and we’re accounting for the process. For the SY 25-26 school year, we will open the opportunity for all stakeholders to participate in the work as we ensure that every RQS student leaves our system academically sound, reflective, able to relate, a contributor, and a professional.
