Important Information Parents and Students 26/27 School Year

Dear SME Parents/Guardians and Students,

Greetings from Shawnee Mission East High School! I hope this communication finds you enjoying a safe and relaxing summer. As we look forward to the 2026-27 school year, a few important items to prepare and consider are noted below. More information can be found on our Back To School Information web page HERE, which includes a convenient checklist with links and attachments for both parents and students. Please be sure to utilize the checklists in order to prepare for a successful school year!

Please utilize the SME Back to School web page to complete the registration process, pay fees, and prepare for a successful start to school in August. All fees should be paid online. More information regarding fee payment and registration can be found using the link on the SME Back to School web page.

There will be two opportunities for students and families to take part in Lancer Launch. At Lancer Launch, students will pick up their MacBooks and take yearbook/student ID photos. Lancer Launch opportunities will be 8:00am-12:00pm on July 31st and/or 3:00pm-6:00pm on August 5th. Students only need to attend once and may sign up for a session HERE. Students will report to the Auxiliary Gym for Lancer Launch.

Additional Important events:

-The SME office re-opens on July 24th.

-All freshmen report on Monday, August 12th at 7:40am for Freshmen Link Day!

-All students report to classes on Tuesday, August 13th. Start time is 7:40am.

-Freshmen Link Dance- Friday, August 14th, from 7pm-9pm

-Back to School Night- Thursday, August 20th, at 6pm

Other Items of Note:

  1. Athletics: Athletic documentation needs to be completed online in Skyward by parents and students. The pre-participation physical and athletic documentation must be completed before participation in athletics at SME. Please see the Physical/Other Required Forms link on our district website for needed forms. Questions may be directed to Ryan Johnson, Athletic Director, at ryanjohnson@smsd.org after July 17th.

  1. Seminar Periods: The Seminar period is in place to give students an opportunity to connect with teachers and receive academic support. Attendance during seminar is expected as students have opportunities to meet with instructors, make-up missed work, receive tutoring, participate in school programming, and access media, industrial, and technology labs. This is also a time when Seminar teachers may help students develop their Personalized Learning Plans and help students with college and career readiness skills.

  1. Late-Starts: Late-start Thursdays begin August 20th. On late start days, classes begin at 8:40am. Teachers WILL NOT be available to meet with students prior to the start of school on late-start days as they are engaged in professional learning community work. Students who arrive early by bus will wait in supervised areas for class to begin.

Community Garden

The SME Environmental Club planted 500+ native plants on April 22nd with the help of Deep Roots. They then planted the community vegetable garden both of which are located outside the commons building next to the learning stairs.

The vegetables grown will be donated to local bank(s) and even our own SME staff.

Thank you club members for participating in these events and help with summer maintenance of the community garden.

Thank you for the assistance.

Future Creators Summer Camp

Future Creators Summer Camp designed specifically for rising juniors and seniors who are interested in content creation, personal branding, and social media marketing. I’ve been leading a similar summer camp at University of the Pacific in California for the past four years and I am very excited to launch an improved version in the KC area!

This camp gives students a hands-on introduction to how content creators build audiences, develop their personal brand, and turn their ideas into real opportunities. It is a great fit for students who want to become content creators or build social media for brands.

Here are the details of the camp:

  • Two separate sessions choose from: June 1–5 or June 8–12

  • 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Cost: $225
  • Hosted on the KU Edwards Campus

  • Registration link: https://deptsec.ku.edu/~edwards/forms/form/20

I’ve attached a flyer with more details and the registration link. If you’re willing, we would greatly appreciate you sharing this opportunity with students who may be interested or sending it to someone else at the school who might know of some interested students.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like additional information - I’d love to connect!

Thank you so much for your consideration.

Best,

Becky
