The Sheiko Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: November 7, 2025
PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Dear Sheiko Families,
It has been another great week of learning at Sheiko Elementary! I wanted to share a quick clarification from last week’s Principal’s Message. Grades 3–5 use an “all block” format for their ELA time, so they will have just one ELA letter grade rather than three as previously mentioned. Our teachers do a wonderful job sharing what students are learning in their Friday newsletters, but I wanted to make sure this was clear for everyone.
The most important thing you can do at home is ensure your child is reading for 20–30 minutes each night—either with you or independently. Yes, even our big kids benefit from reading out loud and discussing books with you! These conversations are key to developing strong comprehension and a love of reading.
Please take a moment tomorrow to log into PowerSchool to view your child’s report card. Review the marks together and set some goals for the second marking period.
This week’s Big Announcement is a reminder to sign up for parent-teacher conferences. Our goal is for 100% of families to have either an in-person or Google Meet conference with their child’s teacher. Each conference is 15 minutes long. You may also schedule conferences with our art, PE, music, STEAM, small group, and iCenter teachers, as well as our English learner, speech, and reading intervention staff. If your child is in "level up" math, teachers have 5-minutes slots for you to check in, as well. We value this time to connect and celebrate your child’s progress together!
Goooooooooooooooooo Lakers!
Warmly,
Blaine McDowell

Fueling Kids’ Futures (formerly Blessings in a Backpack) is back for the 2025–26 school year, providing six non-perishable meals each Friday at no cost to families so children have food over the weekend. The volunteer-run program works with schools to discreetly distribute food bags, with the first distribution on Friday, September 19th. Any family in need is welcome to sign up. SPECIAL GUESTS
Thank you to the West Bloomfield Police Department for doing grade level assemblies about fire prevention and safety! We are very thankful for their time and dedication.
ZERO TARDIES!
Mrs. Bienstock’s 2nd grade and Mr. Malisow’s 5th grade classes earned an extra recess and popsicles with Mrs. McDowell for having zero tardies for the entire month of October! That means every single member of their class was on time to school every single day in October. What an accomplishment! Way to go Sheiko leaders!
Voters in the West Bloomfield School District approved the continuation of the 1.1552-mill Sinking Fund levy for another ten years. The district thanks all voters for participating and for their continued partnership in supporting students, staff, and schools. The Sinking Fund supports the district’s long-term goals of protecting community assets, maintaining secure and healthy schools, and keeping West Bloomfield taxpayer dollars local. Funds can only be used for voter-approved purposes and cannot be diverted to other expenses such as salaries or utilities.
NEWS IN SPECIALS
In PE this week all grades continued the floor hockey unit! Also, please help remind your child to wear proper shoes on their PE day.
Thank you,
Mrs. Scott
KIDS IN CHARGE
The Kids in Charge* (KIC) program is offered in all West Bloomfield School District elementary schools to children from 1st to 5th grade. Students are educated about the dangers and health risks of cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. Apart from teaching kids the hazards of these substances, they are also instructed on how to effectively, assertively, and confidently say no to peer pressure. Students also learn about coping skills and safe & trusted adults. The KIC program has helped significantly reduce drug use rates throughout West Bloomfield.
OK 2 SAY
All 4th & 5th grade students attended a presentation on OK 2 SAY
LOST & FOUND
Our Lost & Found is FULL. Please remind your student to please check to see if anything belongs to them. All parents & guardians are welcome to come and take a look as well.
All items will be donated on Monday, December 1st.
We always welcome parents/guardians to drop off lunch for their student. However, we will not accept food deliveries for students from vendors. This is a safety issue. If food is delivered from a vendor, your student can pick it up from the office at the end of the school day.
Thank you.
BUS ZONE APP
Track Your Route!
- The Bus Zone App is available for iOS, Android and web and allows families to track their student(s) bus along its route, to and from school. Families will need to have their student(s) ID numbers which are available in PowerSchool in order to log into the app and create an account. Check out the transportation page for details.
- As a safety protocol, the Bus Zone app will only allow families to see their student(s) bus route(s) only.
- Please download and complete the app: Apple App Store and Google Play
Sheiko has a donation box located right outside the main office.
