ASD Parent Night: A Night Out with the Superintendent
This week, the Aberdeen School District hosted Parent Night, bringing families together to stay informed and connected.
Following progress report pickup, parents and students gathered in the AHS library for a Conversation with the Superintendent. Students shared powerful testimonials, giving insight into their experiences across the district.
Dr. Smith also provided updates on progress and initiatives throughout the Aberdeen School District, reinforcing our commitment to growth and excellence.
The evening concluded with fellowship, refreshments, and a few rounds of bingo, making it both informative and enjoyable for all.
✈️ Student Spotlight: From Classroom to Cockpit Support: Meet Our Future Aircraft Mechanic
While many students dream of sitting in the cockpit, one of our aviation students has found her calling behind the scenes, where precision, skill, and responsibility keep every aircraft in the air.
Introducing senior J. Young!
Finding Her Path
There wasn’t one defining moment that led her to aircraft maintenance—it was a decision from the start. When the program launched, she signed up to become a mechanic, knowing flying wasn’t her primary goal.
What made it all “click” came later: realizing she had a natural strength in recalling how aircraft parts are assembled and installed. That ability turned interest into confidence.
What the Work Really Looks Like
Aircraft mechanics don’t have “typical” days. One day might be spent completing a full inspection on a plane, and the next could involve smaller maintenance tasks to keep aircraft operating safely.
What she enjoys most? The challenge.
“Fixing aircraft powerplants is complex—but that’s what makes it worth it.”
She’s also quick to clear up a common misconception:
“People think we’re just like auto shop workers. But aircraft mechanics are highly skilled, government-certified professionals responsible for maintenance and even rebuilding engines.”
And the importance of that work can’t be overstated:
“There wouldn’t be any pilots if there were no planes to fly.”
Hands-On Learning and Growth
Some tasks come naturally, but others test her skills. Working under the cockpit of a Piper Cherokee has proven to be one of the toughest challenges so far.
Still, those moments make the wins even better. One accomplishment she’s especially proud of? Successfully replacing a starter without any issues.
Skills That Matter
Success in this field takes more than just interest—it requires:
-
Strong visual and observational skills
-
Hands-on (kinesthetic) learning ability
-
The ability to diagnose problems and identify abnormalities
She credits the program with pushing her further than she ever expected:
“It has put me ahead of many people my age who haven’t experienced the real daily life of a mechanic.”
One lesson that surprised her most? Learning to rely on past experiences to solve new problems.
Purpose Over Recognition
While pilots often get the spotlight, she finds fulfillment in working behind the scenes:
“Helping student pilots reach the skies is all that matters. Fame isn’t needed.”
She compares the responsibility of her work to that of a doctor—keeping both people and aircraft safe and healthy.
Looking Ahead
After graduation, she plans to take the next big step:
-
Completing Airbus’s FlightPath9 program
-
Pursuing an Airframe & Powerplant license at Northwest Mississippi Community College
Her long-term goal? Working for Delta Airlines or maintaining jets for major travel companies.
Advice for Future Aviation Students
Her message is simple—and direct:
“Research. Don’t jump in blind. There are many aviation careers that go unnoticed but are highly appreciated.”
For students unsure about becoming pilots, she offers another perspective:
Aircraft mechanics stay close to aviation without needing to fly, playing a critical role from the ground.
A Personal Note
One of the most surprising things about her journey?
“Before this program, I had never even touched tools.”
She’s still learning names and techniques, but she understands what truly matters:
“It’s not about remembering names—it’s about knowing how to get the job done. Repetition and practice make it better every time.”
Aviation Student Reaches New Heights
Junior O. Beene of the Aberdeen High School Aviation Academy successfully completed his first solo flight at Monroe County Airport in the district’s Piper Cherokee 140.
This milestone marks a significant achievement and reflects the dedication, discipline, and hard work required in aviation training. We are proud of the commitment our students continue to show as they take bold steps toward their future.
Honoring Achievement Across Our District
The Rotary Club of Aberdeen took time on Monday, April 20, to celebrate excellence across Aberdeen School District!
Students and Teachers of the Month were recognized for their hard work, leadership, and commitment to success, proof that strong traditions of achievement are alive and well in our schools.
The spotlight was also on our Aviation Academy, a program that continues to open doors and prepare students for high-demand careers. Ms. MacDonald, Chief Pilot, served as the guest speaker, sharing insight and inspiration about the opportunities ahead for our students.
We are grateful for the Rotary Club’s continued support in recognizing the very best of the Aberdeen School District.

LadyDawgs Fall to West Point and Southaven at home
The Lady Dawgs fell to Southaven and West Point at home this week, but this season is about much more than the final score.
We are incredibly proud of this team for making history as the first Lady Dawg flag football team in our district. Their effort, determination, and willingness to lead the way have set the standard for those who will follow.
The foundation has been laid, and it’s a strong one.
The Lady Dawgs softball team’s season came to a close in the first round of the playoffs against Yazoo County.
While the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, we are proud of the effort, determination, and heart this team showed all season long. They represented Aberdeen with class and grit every step of the way.
Thank you, Lady Dawgs, for a season to be proud of.
