Sharing Our Learning

Dear WHEELS Families,

In October, we continued our focus on fieldwork, with visits to The Metropolitan Mesuem of Art, Hamilton Grange, the New York Public Library, the People's Theatre, the Museum of Art and Design, Poet's House and Green Meadows Farms, among others! Our students have also been getting into the swing of school and preparing high-quality work for their Student-Led Conferences.

On Tuesday, November 3rd we will have our first Student-Led Conferences of the year. On this day, students will be remote. Click this link to see their schedules for the morning.

Most Student-led Conferences will be remote, although a few will be happening in the WHEELS building. Please confirm your time with your child's Crew Leader if you don't have one yet. See the WHEELS Teacher Emails document if you need their contact info.

We're so excited to have our students share with you what they've been working on in class, where they've grown, and their goals for improving by the second SLC in February. If you need help contacting your child's teacher, call (212)781-0524 or email Parent Coordinator Yulisa Sanchez at YSanchez34@schools.nyc.gov.

Lastly, we are thrilled that WHEELS will be holding Student Government elections on Wednesday, November 4th, and we're grateful to Mr. Flath and Ms. Aguilar for all the work they've put into campaign season. Our Student Government candidates want to make sure you get out to vote on Voting Day. Click any of the pictures below to see the video they put together.

It’s a big week and month for student voice at WHEELS! Thank you for making time to listen, celebrate your child’s growth, and support their next steps. We look forward to connecting with you on Tuesday.

Continuamos,

Jon

7th Grade Architects

Middle Grades (6-8)

  • In the last week of October, 7th grade mathematicians became architects. Hired to redesign real spaces at WHEELS, student groups put on hard hats and vests, measured their space on a scale drawing (1 inch = 4 feet), and used the scale to find the actual size and area of each space. Working within a $20,000 budget, each group shopped from a catalog, scaled its items, and built a floor plan. On Friday, groups presented their designs to the Leadership Team.
  • In 6th-grade ELA, students have been reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind as part of our unit on Critical Problems and Design Solutions. As they read, students discuss how design thinking can help solve critical problems and how our habits of character can help us make a difference in our community. Students shared their thinking, used text evidence to support their answers, and discussed misconceptions. On Friday, they went on neighborhood fieldwork with an expert to identify design problems in their community and research solutions.
  • In 8th grade, as part of their Folklore of Latin America Expedition, students are rewriting scenes in the novel Summer of the Mariposas to include mythical creatures they developed.

Upper Grades (9-12)

  • We had a massive turn out for our Financial Aid night in October, with over 100 attending!
  • We two big trips coming up in early November on Monday the 9th and Tuesday the 10th. Our 9th-graders are going on an overnight Outward Bound trip at the Sharpe Reservation to build community together and our 11th-graders will be going on their overnight college trips.

  • We're starting to make preparations for the annual College and Career March, which will be on Friday, December 11th this year. This is always such a memorable opportunity for our school community to support our Seniors on their next steps!
